Going on vacation… WITH SCIENCE!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for a vacation. It's been a rough few months and it would be nice to just get away for a little while. I've been researching vacation spots and came upon Phil Plait's new venture, Science Getaways, which sounds amazing. I talked to Phil to ask a few questions and find out more!

What is Science Getaways?

Science Getaways is a science-themed tourism and event company. The idea for it was born when my wife and I were on vacation a few years ago and wound up chatting with some other folks who were experts on the science of that particular region – the geology, ecology, etc. We were fascinated by what they told us, and it really added a lot to our experience, an extra dimension to everything that made the trip so much better! As a scientist I'm always seeking out the science behind where I'm traveling, and it was my wife who put the two together and said “Why not take a vacation package and science it up?”

A Quick Guide to Boosting your Immunity!

A couple months ago the Women Thinking Free Foundation elected a few new cohorts to the board including Ashley Hamer (aka Smashley) of Mad Art Lab fame, Katie Hovany, and myself. Since then we have managed to plan a Tdap vaccination clinic at TAM in conjunction with the JREF, so get excited and come say hello to the WTF in Vegas this summer!

The skeptical community is pro-vaccination, but it is surprising that even skeptical adults (19 and over) are unaware of the necessity for booster shots. So let's give our immunity a little boost!

Actor Josh Hutcherson recently won GLAAD’s Vanguard Award. This award is presented to entertainers who have made significant contributions to the promotion of LGBT equality. Hutcherson, who was in a little movie you may have heard about called The Hunger Games, won the award for his work with the Straight But Not Narrow campaign.

During his acceptance speech at the 2012 GLAAD Media Awards, he said:

I’m so sick of saying the words “gay” and “lesbian”—like, just people.

Planned Parenthood

Skepchick Quickies 4.24

  • The girl's guide to calling out sexism without being attacked – "At the very least, women who call out sexism can expect to hear the B word, which makes me beg the question: Is it even possible to nip sexism in the bud without a little mud getting slung your way?"
  • Planned Parenthood worried it's the target of a new undercover sting – "Clinics in at least 11 states have reported two dozen or more "hoax visits" over the past several weeks, in which a woman walks into a clinic, claims to be pregnant and asks a particular pattern of provocative questions about sex-selective abortions, such as how soon she can find out the gender of the fetus, by what means and whether she can schedule an abortion if she's having a girl."
  • Cryptidillated – Hijinks Ensue describes a woo show I would totally watch. From Mark.
  • Rosalind Franklin, in her own words and letters – "Jenifer Glynn, Franklin’s sister, offers insight into her sibling’s personality in here book of Rosalind’s correspondence, My Sister Rosalind Franklin: A Family Memoir."
