Seamount - Kiss The Skull
Great traditional doom from Germany. Artist: Seamount Album: Seamount Year: 2008 You know its hard still missing you And now you're gone nothing I can do If I'd of known that this would come to be I'd of said what this all meant to me Until I touch again you to let you know Until I see you gone I'll never let you go Until I kiss the skull it's hard to say goodbye Until I shake the bones I'll never let you die... never let you die. All it is now is lost in time What it was is once was you were mine Now it's done and it can't come back After now and all into the black Until I touch again you to let you know Until I see you gone I'll never let you go Until I kiss the skull it's hard to say goodbye Until I shake the bones I'll never let you die... never let you die. Nothing but a memory now but still it lives inside Though it may be you're not around but to me your still alive Nothing but a memory now but still it lives inside Though it may be you're not around but to me your still alive

Davidson Seamount: The Biology of an Underwater Mountain
Over the last two decades, marine biologists have discovered lush forests of deep-sea corals and sponges growing on seamounts (underwater mountains) offshore of the California coast. It has generally been assumed that many of these animals live only on seamounts, and are found nowhere else. However, new research from MBARI shows that most seamount animals can also be found in other deep-sea areas. Seamounts, however, do support particularly large, dense clusters of these animals. These findings may help coastal managers protect seamounts from damage by human activities. For more information, see: MBARI news release: www.mbari.org CR McClain, L. Lundsten, M. Ream, JP Barry, A. Diving on MacDonald Seamount
During an expedition to Polynesia, the Cousteau team explores an underwater volcano known as MacDonald Seamount, or Tamarii in Polynesian. The rusty red lava that forms the dome of the seamount comes from a hot spot that, millions of years ago, gave birth to the southern islands of Polynesia. Now Calypso's divers are witness to early signs of a new islands birth. Just days after the ship leaves, there will be a full eruption of rocks, steam and gas bubbles.

PIPA Seamount Fly-through (short version)
RT =0:45. Seamounts are submerged volcanic peaks that rise abruptly from the seafloor. Scientists have identified more than 45000 seamounts worldwide using satellite altimetry techniques. Collectively, seamounts represent one of the largest marine habitats on Earth. This fly-though takes you through the seamounts of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) in the Central Pacific. Davidson Seamount Exploration 2002: "Deep Sea Toad" Robotic Arm Capture
This video was taken by the ROV Tiburon at the Davidson Seamount, a huge underwater volcano, located just outside the boundary of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The scientists utilize the dexterity of the robotic arm on the ROV to capture an initially unidentified anglerfish. Placed into a sealed container for its journey to the surface, it arrives in the wet lab aboard the research vessel Western Flyer. The science team is then able to identify the specimen as a Deep Sea Toad (Chaunax Coloratus). Video courtesy of Davidson Seamount Exploration 2002, MBARI, NOAA/OER. Climate Change Update (10 August 2011) Axial Seamount Eruption 3x Bigger
August 9, 2011 -- PORTLAND -- Oregon State University scientists say they've discovered an eruption of an undersea volcano about 250 miles off the Oregon Coast. The April 6 eruption produced a lava flow at least 1.2 miles wide, scientists say, and there were hundreds of tiny earthquakes during the eruption. The volcano, named Axial Seamount, last erupted in 1998, and the team of OSU scientists forecasted it would erupt again before 2014. Oregon State scientists say this marks the first-ever successful forecast of an undersea volcano. The new eruption was discovered July 28 when scientists used a robot to find a new lava flow on the seafloor that was not present a year ago. Because only a handful of the earthquakes were detected from land, scientists did not initially believe there was an eruption. Bill Chadwick, an OSU geologist, says the team of scientists thought they were in the wrong place because the seafloor looked so different. "We couldn't find our markers or monitoring instruments or other distinctive features on the bottom," he says. "Once we figured out that an eruption had happened, we were pretty excited." When they recovered seafloor instruments and recorders, the scientists learned the volcanic eruption took place April 6. "So far, it is hard to tell the full scope of the eruption because we discovered it near the end of the expedition," Chadwick says. "But it looks like it might be at least three times bigger than the 1998 eruption." theextinctionprotocol ...

Squid School on Patton Seamount
Patton Seamount is 166 nautical miles southeast of Kodiak Island, in the Gulf of Alaska. It's among the largest features in the Kodiak-Bowie Seamount Chain. A school of squid came upon Alvin submersible while exploring Patton at 450 m during an expedition in 2002, squirting ink and posturing as if to intimidate sub. One squid took interest in a Golden Tanner crab trapped in the collecting basket. It's brushed away by Alvin's manipulator arm. oceanexplorer.noaa.gov

Save The Earth funds research project on Davidson Seamount
The Davidson Seamount is a spectacular geologic feature on which recent explorations have documented dramatic biological discoveries (some featured on the BBC production "Planet Earth"). The exploration of Seamounts is relatively novel, because we only recently have the technology to access these deep areas. This project would fund a postdoctoral researcher to compare the biology on Davidson Seamount to other seamounts as well as non-seamount surrounding areas in the Pacific Ocean. This work may help finalize decisions on whether to protect Davidson Seamount by including it as part of the National Marine Sanctuary.

PIPA Seamount Fly-Through (long version)
RT= 1:50. The Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) is the largest Marine Protected Area in the world. It's the size of the state of California. More than 99% of the ocean habitat in PIPA is pelagic, where a vast array of invertebrates live and drift around. One dozen seamounts are within PIPA boundaries, from sea level to 5000 meters depth. Most are unexplored. PIPA Web: www.phoenixislands.org Fly-through video by Greg Brost and Peter Etnoyer using Google Earth 5.0. Text by Greg Stone, Conservation International. Diving Noel's Wall: seamount Motualevu, northeast Fiji
Named for the patriarch of Matangi Island Resort, Noel Douglas, this dive site, located a few kilometers to the east of Matangi Island and a few kilometers north of Laucala Island, is one of the best wall dives in Fiji. In the past ten years, two category 5 cyclones have swept over this reef, removing most staghorn acropora coral and large table acropora corals. All that's left are the mounding corals that depend upon these same storms for their survival. If left untouched, the faster growing acropora corals will quickly overgrow and shade the much slower growing mounding corals, so this site is a classic example of nature's balance. The seamount where this dive site is located is called "Motui Levu" in Fijian. When the seas were lower this was an island atoll. The rim of the atoll is only, in places, 6 meters below the ocean's surface. Besides Noel's Wall, other dive sites at this location are Yellow Wall, the Edge, and the Corner. At the present time, only one dive operator visits this atoll, Matangi Island Resort. What makes this dive spectacular is the clarity of the water. Far from shore, there are no run-off sediments, like most other dive sites in Fiji. Unfortunately, on the day I filmed, a large tropical depression had just passed overhead and the sediments on the seamount itself were stirred up, clouding the water somewhat. With perfect weather, the visibility is 50+ meters. Another trademark for this dive site are the large pelagic fish that visit the wall ...

Welker Seamount Sponge Reef
A deep-sea sponge reef 850 m deep on Welker Seamount in the Gulf of Alaska. A large pink Paragorgia bubblegum coral (~ 1 m tall) stands amidst hundreds of Farrea occa sponges. Other sponges and sea fans are present, too. Small crabs and shrimps are visible on the colonies and on the seafloor. Many crustaceans are hidden except for their small red eyes. Video by Alvin submersible aboard WHOI ship RV Atlantis during the Gulf of Alaska Seamount Expedition in 2004. Lasers are 10 cm (~ 4 in) apart.
