Lesley Gore with Adrian Zorec 13th September 1989, Legends Of Rock N' Roll Tour, Sydney Entertainment Centre, Australia. Backstage at the Sydney Ent Cent with Lesley Gore on the Legends Of Rock N' Roll Tour. This was a rock n roll tour revival with the likes of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Mary Wilson, Col Joye, Bo Diddley & Lesley Gore. It's my interview and I'll cry if I want to, actually it's ok, I sound a bit stiff and starchy but the questions were ok and Lesley was friendly and open to talking. I had just turned 26 the day before and while I'd done a phone interview in 1987 with Chris Bailey of The Saints fame when 'Just Like Fire Would' came out, I always remember Chris was bemused by my soft spoken naivety - I'd really not experienced much celebrity interview. If doing this today I'd be more conversational, chatty and down a spirit or two for courage. The other audio at the tail end of the interview I call backstage pass, this was hanging around backstage while Lesley was performing, prior to our interview and if some VIP should appear I left the tape running, you hear the beginning start with Col Joye sing 'Judy's Turn To Cry', Glenn A Baker appears in the background here and there, performance audio and then Lesley comes off stage before our interview and she was having technical difficulties with monitor playback and in the interview first up, she mentions technical difficulties so, it must have bugged her. I met the Everly Brothers and while professional, I'd never insist they were friendly or that charming but I guess they saved that for their stage act, soon to be in heaven. I will get the audio for Bo Diddley up, he was the nicest most down to earth friendly person you could ever meet, god bless his soul and at the time, I had scant idea of just how important and influential this man was but he wasn't about attitude and having his head up his ass, he was the real deal and I count myself lucky to have had him for 5 mins as a personal audience cause he was always eager to talk and say it like it is, Bo was an extraordinary person and most generous. If I had access to Google at the time, stat bios would be hell more easy to access and up to date and the idea of being there was to capture the essence and feel of the these rock/pop legends for a syndicated radio show. It ended up ok but the difficult nature of the likes of Chuck Berry & The Everly Bros and Jerry Lee Lewis meant we only got the stars as they say, talk to everyone, add to this a microphone cable with a fault at the plug end that could cut out intermittently at any time and I believe the moments were not captured as well as they could've been, we had access backstage but not guaranteed access to any particular celebrity, if I was attempting this again I'd want full agreed to and a signed guarantee that the stars would cough up a few words, even if it was only vox pop fluff, a great experience none the less.
