Breaking Wootz Sword part 1
doorcountyforgeworks.com Hello All, I am Ric Furrer of www.doorcountyforgeworks.com The metallurgical results will be included in a 2011 wootz DVD. Here is is a short video talk/demo I gave in 2001 (wow was it that long ago?) to Natalie Gillespie, a film student at Northwestern University. This is about the history and modern aspects of wootz crucible steel and the destruction of an old wootz sword. What follows is the visual discussion of that question. This three part video documents some of my past research into wootz steel. Through the destruction of an old Indian wootz sword blade much information was gained. Here you have the history of wootz as well as description of its metallurgy. Samples were taken and bend tested under controlled conditions yielding interesting results for both the old wootz as well as my modern material. Chemical analysis and photo micrographs were also done which will be included in a Wootz Crucible Steel Instructional DVD scheduled for 2011 release. The DVD will include new information and show you how you can make wootz for your own blade work.

Wootz Sword
Hello All, I am Ric Furrer of www.doorcountyforgeworks.com Here is a series of photos showing how a wootz crucible steel sword is made. This is NOT pattern welded damascus, but rather a special steel which gets its pattern from its chemistry and forging techniques and NOT by folding and welding. It is a small batch process which I have been doing for some 12 years now. Also note the forged in fuller (groove) and the wonderful 24karat gold fittings. I make wootz as well as damascus steel (pattern-welded)swords and knives

Ninja Gaiden 2 Weapon Exhibition Vol. 3: Eclipse Scythe
This gigantic scythe has long been a prized weapon among the Lycanthrope tribe of fiends. As its name suggests, its design was inspired by the natural phenomenon of the solar eclipse. The roots of the weapon can be traced back to an ancient sacrifice ritual. When the king of an ancient Lycanthrope tribe was overthrown, his body was tossed into a vat of molten Wootz steel, also know as Dasmascus steel. From this steel, the scythe was forged. After being hammered into rough but solid shape, the blade of the scythe was quenched by repeatedly plunging it into the bodies of living human beings. It is said that it took a full nine days for the scythe to cool completely. One would think that the characteristic grain pattern of Damascus steel should be visible on the scythe's surface, but at present such a texture is nowhere to be found. Hayabusa cared little about the texture of the scythe or even the history; the only thing he's worried about is how long it's going to take to wash the blood off after massacring his enemies in this video... Lunokhod Prototype movement by Konstantin Chaykin - BASELWORLD 2011
Konstantin Chaykin Lunokhod Prototype movement. LUNOKHOD It is not far off when the lights will go on in all the six halls of Messe Basel fairgrounds, and for a few days a small Swiss city will become Clock Mecca. International exhibition fair of watch and jewelry Baselworld 2011 starts on March 24, but participants prepare for a long time. And most of them can tell you today about the updates they are going to take to the court of international experts. Russia in the Basel exhibition will be presented by some jewelry and watch companies, among which a member of the Académie Horlogère Des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) Konstantin Chaykin holds a special place. Maestro, who has been surprising the world watch community with his unusual findings in watchmaking for several years, is preparing a real exclusive for the Basel Show. His new creation is mechanical watch with a new solution of lunar phases indication. Konstantin Chaykin managed to bring to perfection one of the most romantic watch complications. In his hands comes the most lively and realistic watch Moon in the world. Instead of using the classic indicator window through which a stylized image of the moon is usually shown maestro placed in his new watch a miniature copy of the Earth satellite. The ball is 12 mm in diameter, it is coated with the relief of the lunar surface and located in the center of the dial, and lunar phases are indicated by means of covering it up with mobile silver hemisphere. This hemisphere ...

Vickers hardness testing on Indian Sword
This video was shot by Dr. Ann Feuerbach. Drs. David Edge and Alan Williams of The Wallace Collection in London are shown using a Vickers micro hardness tester on India steel Blades. This was part of an Arms and Armour conference held at Mehrangarh Fort, located in Jodhpur city,Rajasthan state in Feb/March 2007. Robert Elgood stands on the left and I next to him. Many papers were presented at this conference and there were plans for all to be written up at some point by R. Elgood. More information on this can be read on my website.

Blister and Shear Steel part one
Hello All, I am Ric Furrer of www.doorcountyforgeworks.com A forging video showing the making of an old steel called Blister Steel. Basically it is wrought iron which has had carbon added. This addition of carbon allows the steel to hardened with a quench and can be used for tools...such as knives. Special guest Robert Rossdeutscher of rnrknives.com whom I am walking through the process with me filming. This is a teaser for a longer video which will be for sale soon.

Making Damascus Steel 1
A class on forging - making pattern welded Damascus steel. Taught by Mike Blue of Cannon River Forge. Email Mike Blue crforge@frontiernet.net Date is Feb 10 & 11, 2012. Most of us are making the steel to be used for a Straight Razor or a knife blade. Please note that this is not the steel of the ancient city of Damascus Syria which is now known as wootz/pulad/bulat etc.
