radiohead Biography

The British alternative rock band Radiohead was formed in 1985 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The band members include Thom Yorke (piano, guitars, vocals), Jonny Greenwood (keyboards, guitars, other instruments), Colin Greenwood (synthesizers, bass), Ed O'Brien (backing vocals, guitars) and Phil Selway (percussion, drums).

In 1992, Radiohead released “Creep,” their first single. Initially the song was unsuccessful. However several months after “Pablo Honey,” their 1993 debut album was released, the song evolved into an international hit. The popularity of Radiohead in the U.K. rose after they released “The Bends,” their second album, in 1995. “OK Computer,” Radiohead's third album, was released in 1997. It propelled the band into even greater international fame. “OK Computer,” featuring a modern alienation theme and expansive sound, is consider a landmark record for the 1990s.

Radiohead's musical style evolved with their release in 2000 of “Kid A” and in 2001 “Amnesiac.” The band incorporated jazz, post-punk, Krautrock and experimental electronic music influences. In 2003 Radiohead released “Hail to the Thief,” which was a mixture of lyrics, electronics and guitar-driven rock inspired by war. The set was the final album for Radiohead with EMI. The first six albums from Radio by 2007 had sold over 25 million copies. In 2007 the band released “In Rainbows,” their seventh album, independently. Originally it was a digital download where customers were able to set a price. Later it was released in physical format and achieved both chart and critical success.

Rolling Stone ranked Radiohead as number 73 on their “The Greatest Artists of All Time” list. The earlier albums of Radiohead's influenced British pop and rock music, while their later work has influenced musicians from many different genres.
