What Is Manganese
What Is Manganese
What Is Manganese Name Origin Latin: mangnes (magnet); Ital. manganese. "Manganese" in different languages. Sources Most abundant ores are pyrolusite (MnO2), braunite (Mn2+Mn3+6SiO12), psilomelane [(BaH2O)2Mn5O10] and rhodochrosite (MnCO3). Manganese is mined in South Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Gabon and Australia. Vast quantities of manganese exist in manganese nodules on the ocean floor. Attempts to find economically viable methods of harvesting manganese nodules were abandoned in the 1970s. Annual production is around 6.2 milliontons. Abundance Universe: 8 ppm (by weight) Sun: 10 ppm (by weight) Carbonaceous meteorite: 2800 ppm Earth's Crust: 1100 ppm Seawater: Atlantic surface: 1 x 10-4 ppm Atlantic deep: 9.6 x 10-5 ppm Pacific surface: 1 x 10-4 ppm Pacific deep: 4 x 10-5 ppm Human: 200 ppb by weight 23 ppb by atoms Uses Manganese is essential to iron and steel production, it also used in some aluminium alloys. It is also used in making; batteries, axles, rail switches, safes, ploughs and ceramics. Manganese is used to decolourize glass (removing the greenish tinge that presence of iron produces) and, in higher concentration, make violet-coloured glass. Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is a potent oxidizer and used in chemistry and in medicine as a disinfectant

Make Manganese Dioxide (MnSO4 + KHSO5 approach)
In this video we make Manganese dioxide (MnO2) Dissolve 10g of manganese sulfate (MnSO4) in 30mL water and 25g of potassium peroxymonosulfate (KHSO5, also called oxone) in 100mL of water. Combine the two solutions and the Manganese dioxide will preciptate directly out. Filter it off, wash it out and let it dry. Manganese dioxide can be used for making potassium permanganate, making manganese dioxide electrodes, and as an oxidant for some reactions.

Make Cobalt and Manganese Nitrates
Make Cobalt and Manganese Nitrates
We show how to make Cobalt nitrate and Manganese nitrate needed to make manganese dioxide electrodes. WARNING: These are heavy metals and toxic if mishandled. In addition cobalt is carcinogenic. You MUST wear gloves and preferably additional safety equipment like dust masks and lab coat. A fumehood is recommended too. Making cobalt nitrate is very easy, just get cobalt carbonate from a pottery supply store and mix it with twice its mass in water. Then add nitric acid until it stops fizzing. That's all! The red solution can be dried to make cobalt nitrate crystals for storage. Making manganese nitrate is a little more complicated. Manganese dioxide is mixed with oxalic acid, water and nitric acid to produce manganese nitrate. Alternatively you can bubble nitrogen dioxide directly into the manganese dioxide. If the solution is yellow it's because there is some iron contamination. But this is not a problem for making manganese dioxide electrodes.

Manganese Heptoxide: Synthesis and Reactions
Manganese Heptoxide: Synthesis and Reactions
In this video, we create a small quantity of manganese (VII) oxide, also known as manganese heptoxide or Mn2O7, and react it with a combustible organic compound, our old combustible organic standby, denatured ethanol. The reactions seen here are: 2*KMnO4 (s) + H2SO4 (aq) → Mn2O7 (l) + K2SO4 (aq) + H2O (l) 2*Mn2O7 (l) + C2H5OH (l) → 4*MnO2 (s) + 2*CO2 (g) + 3*H2O (g) It is very important that eye and hand protection are worn at all times during the course of this experiment. This reaction involves a very concentrated strong acid, as well as powerful oxidizing reagents that must be handled with care and treated with respect. A respirator is also recommended to prevent the inhalation of the manganese-based fumes coming off of this reaction. Potassium permanganate is a DEA classified List II chemical. As such, only a limited quantity (One pound) may be legally purchased annually in the USA. You may find this chemical stocked at most online retailers specializing in scientific supply, but sold under strict quantity control. Sulfuric acid, the world's most important chemical in terms of quantity produced per year, is also one of the hardest for the consumer to buy. The Reaction Factory recommends Rooto brand professional strength drain cleaner- look to make sure it's labeled as containing concentrated sulfuric acid. Denatured alcohol can be purchased at any hardware store alongside paint thinners and other solvents. The alcohol is denatured, which is to say, adulterated with ...

Make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes (for chlorate or HHO cells)
Make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes (for chlorate or HHO cells)
How to make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes that can be used for chlorate cells or HHO cells and a few other electrochemical processes requiring inert anodes in oxidizing solutions. Make the electrode is fairly simple. First a titanium strip is sanded to give a clean surface and then etched with hydrochloric acid to activate it. Cobalt nitrate solution is applied in a thin layer and then heated to 300 Celsius to decompose (pyrolyze) the cobalt nitrate into cobalt oxide. the loosely adhering cobalt oxide is washed off and then new layers of cobalt oxide are applied. Usually between 3 to 10 layers. Then manganese nitrate is applied and the process repeated to make manganese dioxide. Another 10 to 50 layers may be applied. Optionally, a further layer of manganese nitrate by electrolysis may be applied by using the electrode as an anode in a solution of 90 grams manganese sulfate, 500mL water and 12mL concentrated sulfuric acid. Copper or titanium is used as the cathode and a current density of about 10ma per square centimeter is used. A short run time of a few minutes or so puts a thin layer of manganese dioxide on the surface that seems to reduce permanganate production, but does not eliminate it. In the future i'll be working on a lead dioxide electrode.

The basics of Manganese Phosphating (Parkerizing) in HD
The basics of Manganese Phosphating (Parkerizing) in HD
This video shows a fairly good breakdown of the process considering I don't have a camera man to help me film. I did leave out a few basic things: 1. Invest in a brand new spray bottle and fill it with Acetone or similar degreaser. If you happen to accidentally get a finger print or drop of sweat on your freshly prepared part, you can spray it off with the acetone. 2. Do not skimp on the metal preparation. With the blasting, make sure you are going for a consistent pressure with your air regulator, and that you are going over all the parts of the metal in a even fashion. 90 percent of the finish you get with ANYTHING you are doing, is going to come down to the preparation of the part to be finished. This applies to anything IE painting, duracoat, metal refinishing, etc. 3. In terms of degreasing, if you are going to opt for a simple green/purple power bath, make SURE THAT YOU WEAR GLOVES WHILE HANDLING THE METAL FROM THAT POINT ON ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A DEGREASER LIKE ACETONE ON HAND TO FIX YOUR MISTAKES. This is very important. 4. You may want to invest in a basic sweat band to keep drops of sweat from falling on your work. 5. If you are doing multiple pieces, make sure you are changing your water rinsing bath out every hour or so. 6. If you want a very traditional parkerizing like you see on WW2 firearms, opt for a zinc phosphating, then allow the parts to sit in a bath of 20-50W motor oil for about 3 months. If you have access to large quantities of cosmoline ...

Make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes - Revisited
Make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes - Revisited
We show how to make Manganese Dioxide electrodes. Warning: Nitric acid is corrosive and nitrogen dioxide is toxic. This experiment should be performed outside or in a fume hood. Take 1 gram of highly highly pure manganese dioxide and add 1.45g of oxalic acid dihydrate. Then add in 5 mL of water. The oxalic acid will react with the manganese dioxide to form manganese carbonate along with water and carbon dioxide. When the reaction slows down, carefully add in 1.7mL of nitric acid a few drops at a time. The nitric acid will neutralize the manganese carbonate and produce manganese nitrate and carbon dioxide. Pipette the liquid to another container, away from the excess manganese dioxide. Evaporate the solution until it just starts to precipitate/crystallized. To make the electrodes take a sanded titanium strip and immerse in concentrated hydrochloric acid until it bubbles evenly. Wash off the excess acid with distilled water. Apply a layer of manganese manganese solution to the titanium and then place the titanium on the hot plate set to least 300 celsius. Press down with a rod or spatula and as the electrode heats up the manganese nitrate will decompose into manganese dioxide and release nitrogen dioxide. When the electrode stops belching out brown nitrogen dioxide, immerse the electrode in water and wipe away any loosely bound manganese dioxide. Then apply another layer of manganese nitrate and repeat the process as many times as necessary. Eventually you'll have a ...
