Richard Vincent "Rick" Mercer (born October 17, 1969) is a Canadian comedian, television personality, political satirist, and blogger.

Mercer first came to national attention in 1990, when he premiered his one man show ''Show Me the Button, I'll Push It, or Charles Lynch Must Die'' at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa. A pointed, satirical political commentary on Canadian life after Meech Lake, ''Show Me the Button'' made Mercer a national star as he toured the show across Canada. Mercer came to greater attention for his role in the satirical news show ''This Hour Has 22 Minutes'', and his spinoff special ''Talking To Americans'' was the highest-rated comedy special in the history of CBC Television, with 2.7 million viewers.

Television shows

In 1992, he created and performed his second show, ''I've Killed Before, I'll Kill Again'', which was also a popular touring show. Also in that year, he began to work with former ''CODCO'' members Cathy Jones, Mary Walsh, and with fellow Newfoundlander Greg Thomey, to create a new television series for CBC Television which became ''This Hour Has 22 Minutes''.

In the first eight seasons of ''22 Minutes'', Mercer provided some of the show's signature moments, including an Internet petition (on the '' 22 Minutes'' website) to force Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day to change his first name to Doris.

Mercer's tightly scripted and performed two-minute "rants," in which he would speak directly to the camera about a current political issue, shot in a style similar to those Denis Leary used in MTV commercials, quickly became the show's signature segment. In 1998, he published a book, ''Streeters'', which compiled many of his most famous ''22 Minutes'' rants. It quickly became a national bestseller. In 2007 he published his second book, ''Rick Mercer Report: The Book''.

In November 2010, Mercer contributed a rant he had previously recorded in 2007 on the subject of teen bullying in high schools to Dan Savage's It Gets Better Project.

''Made in Canada''

Mercer co-created the series ''Made in Canada'', which ran for five seasons on CBC Television from 1998 – 2003. The show was a fast-paced situation comedy which self-referentially satirized the Canadian TV production industry, often drawing from details of its own production companies and including thinly veiled parodies of contemporary programs. It was syndicated abroad as ''The Industry'' and won several Gemini Awards (which were themselves satirized in subsequent episodes.)

''Talking to Americans''

One of Mercer's trademark comedy routines on ''22 Minutes'' was ''Talking to Americans'', in which he would travel to a major American city or institution and conduct on-the-street interviews with average Americans regarding Canadian politics, the weather, etc., often with hilarious results as the subject's ignorance about Canada was illustrated. One famous example saw Mercer asking Americans' opinion on whether Canada should change its "20 Hour Clock" to the 24 hour one used by the United States. He received approval from citizens and from the Governor of Iowa, Tom Vilsack. On another occasion he got the support of Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee in calling on Canadians to save the "National Igloo."

Mercer made international headlines in 2000 when he pulled a ''Talking to Americans'' stunt on then-presidential candidate George W. Bush. He successfully got Bush to answer questions about non-existent Canadian Prime Minister "Jean Poutine". Bush was not amused at the time, and thereafter refused to accept interviews from the CBC. However, he did make a joking reference to this incident during his visit to Canada in 2004. In the same US election campaign, Mercer asked Democratic candidate Al Gore to promise to visit the "Canadian capital city" of Toronto after his election. Gore did not question Mercer's incorrect identification of the capital of Canada.

In 2001, Mercer co-produced a CBC special based on ''Talking to Americans'', which attracted 2.7 million Canadian viewers—the highest-rated television special in Canadian history. Later, the respected ABC News program ''Nightline'' would devote a show to it. This was his last major project related to ''22 Minutes''—at the end of the 2000–2001 season, he announced his departure from that show. It was rumoured that he had decided to leave because of friction between Mercer and co-star Mary Walsh, although other reasons include focusing on his other television show, ''Made in Canada''. ''Talking to Americans'' was nominated for a Gemini Award, but following the 9/11 attacks, Mercer declined the nomination.

''The Rick Mercer Report''

In 2003, ''Made in Canada'' ended its run as well, and Mercer began to work on a new CBC series, ''Rick Mercer's Monday Report''. Similar in format to ''22 Minutes'' and ''The Daily Show with Jon Stewart'', the show debuted in January 2004. Also in 2003, Mercer went to Afghanistan to visit the Canadian troops stationed there (See: Operation Athena), resulting in the television special ''Christmas in Kabul''.

Despite reports of a long-standing feud Mercer invited Walsh to appear on ''Monday Report'' as a special guest to promote her own series ''Hatching, Matching and Dispatching''.

At the end of its second season, ''Monday Report'' was the highest rated arts and entertainment show on the CBC. Mercer has had a who's who from the world of Canadian entertainment and politics appear as guests on his show. Ex-Prime Minister Paul Martin gave him a private tour of 24 Sussex Drive and former New Democratic Party leader Ed Broadbent made snow angels with Mercer on Parliament Hill. Other prominent guests were NDP leader Jack Layton; Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper (now Prime Minister); Green Party leader Elizabeth May; then-Conservative MP Belinda Stronach; Conservative MP Peter MacKay; Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams; Olympic gold medallist Kyle Shewfelt; author Pierre Berton; recording artists Jann Arden, Bif Naked, Rush bassist Geddy Lee, and Sarah McLachlan; publishing mogul Conrad Black; and former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. When Mercer hosted a relief benefit concert for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, musical guests Barenaked Ladies appeared in a segment Mercer shot backstage completely naked.

Since Mercer launched his own show, he became a regular target of his old show ''22 Minutes''. Criticism of Mercer focused mostly on his ongoing support of the Canadian Forces and his personal wealth.

In 2005, the CBC moved ''Monday Report'' to Tuesday nights, which caused the show's name to be changed to ''The Rick Mercer Report''. On his blog, Mercer wrote of the time slot shift that "we ended the season as the highest rated comedy show on the network. Clearly some drastic changes were needed."

A book by Mercer, ''Rick Mercer Report: The Book'', based on his television program, was published on September 25, 2007, by Doubleday Canada. This was Mercer's first book since his bestselling ''Streeters'' of 1998, and contained a collection of the best of Mercer's "rants" from the first four seasons of ''Rick Mercer Report'', together with choice moments from interviews for the program and other writings by Mercer. On CBC Radio's ''Sounds Like Canada'' on September 21, Shelagh Rogers said of the book that "it's the most fun I've had in bed in a long time." The book entered the ''Globe and Mail'' books chart on October 6 at number three. A continuing commercial success, it was number one in the ''Globe'' bestseller list in the week before Christmas 2007, and has been reprinted eight times.

An expanded and updated paperback version of ''Rick Mercer Report: The Book'', called ''Rick Mercer Report: The Paperback Book'', was published by Anchor Canada on September 16, 2008 and immediately entered the top ten of the ''Globe and Mail'' bestseller list. It continues to sell well and has been reprinted several times.

Other film and television work

Mercer has hosted ''It Seems Like Yesterday'', which examines pop-culture from the 1950s to the 1980s. He has appeared in a few films, including ''Secret Nation'', ''Understanding Bliss'' and ''Bon Cop, Bad Cop''.

Awards

Mercer has received more than 20 Gemini Awards for his television work. He has also been a winner of the prestigious Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award, presented to him at the 2003 Banff Television Festival. In 1993, Newfoundland premier Clyde Wells honoured Mercer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council's Artist of the Year award. In 2004, Mercer was presented with the Governor General's Performing Arts Award. He donated his $15,000 cash prize to the LSPU hall, the theatre in Newfoundland where Mercer performed his early work.

He holds honorary degrees from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Brock University in St. Catharines, McMaster University in Hamilton, Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, and the University of British Columbia. He received an honorary high school diploma for his outstanding efforts and determination from Landmark East School in Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 1999.

Mercer was awarded the 30th Annual Bob Edwards Award in Calgary.

In 2007, he was named honorary colonel of the 423 Maritime Helicopter Squadron, based in Shearwater, Nova Scotia; the squadron flies the Sea King helicopters.

Spokesperson and endorsements

Rick Mercer is co-chair, along with Belinda Stronach, in the Spread the Net campaign, partnered through UNICEF, which kicked off at Brock University on September 10, 2008. Spread the Net provides bed nets for $10 each to prevent the spread of malaria among children in Africa.

In December 2004 Mercer appeared on the commercials advertising the One-Tonne Challenge for the Government of Canada. Mercer also appeared as a model in a national ad for men's clothing store, Harry Rosen, wearing a Canali suit. All of Mercer's fees for the campaign went to Casey House, a hospice in Toronto for people living with AIDS. Casey House was founded by June Callwood, who appeared as a celebrity guest on ''Monday Report''.

In September 2005, Mercer became the national spokesperson for the 2005 Walk For Life, a series of 132 fund-raising walks across Canada that raise money for people living with HIV and AIDS. The Walk for Life is a project of the Canadian AIDS Society.

Mercer has narrated an animated science video on climate change for Science North in Sudbury.

In November 2010, Mercer joined the It Gets Better, Canada campaign, a series of videos that aim to help gay and lesbian youth to overcome bullying.

Personal life

Mercer was born in St. John's, Newfoundland. He dropped out of Prince of Wales High School in St. John's before completing his diploma requirements. However, in 2002 he was presented with an honorary doctor of letters by Laurentian University and in 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by Memorial University of Newfoundland. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets when he was in his teen years.

Mercer's partner is television producer Gerald Lunz. Although the romantic relationship came first, Lunz is also Mercer's long-time partner in business, who discovered him, fostered his career, and is currently the executive producer of ''The Rick Mercer Report''. He regards his personal life as private, and says little about it in public.

Thomas J. "Tom" Mulcair (born October 24, 1954, Ottawa, Ontario) is a Canadian lawyer, university professor, and politician. He is the federal Member of Parliament for Outremont, Quebec, Canada, and holds the seat for the New Democratic Party of Canada. He was the provincial Member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Chomedey in Laval from 1994 to 2007, holding the seat for the Liberal Party of Quebec. He served as the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks from 2003 until 2006, in the Liberal government of Premier Jean Charest. Elected MP for Outremont in a by-election in 2007, he was named Deputy Leader of the New Democratic Party, jointly with Libby Davies, shortly afterwards, and has won re-election twice. On May 26, 2011 he was named the New Democratic Party's Opposition House Leader. Prior to entering politics, Mulcair was a civil servant in the Quebec provincial government.

Early life, education, and career

Mulcair was born in 1954 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital to Harry Donnelly Mulcair, an Irish- Canadian father, and Jeanne Hurtubise, a French-Canadian mother. He grew up in Wrightville district in Hull (now Gatineau). He decided to move to Montreal to attend university. Mulcair graduated from McGill University in 1977 with degrees in common law and civil law.

He was called to the Bar of Quebec in 1979, and has taught law courses to non-law students at Concordia University (1984), at the Saint Lawrence Campus of Champlain Regional College in Sainte-Foy, and at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

Before becoming a politician, Mulcair acted as a lawyer in Quebec's Ministry of Justice. He served as Commissioner of the Appeals Committee on the Language of Instruction (1986). He worked for Alliance Quebec during its moderate phase in the early 1980s. He was President of l'Office des professions du Québec (1987 to 1993), and was a board member of the Conseil de la langue française.

Enters provincial politics

He first entered the National Assembly in the 1994 election, winning the riding of Chomedey. He was re-elected in 1998 and 2003. When the Quebec Liberal Party formed a provincial government in 2003, Premier of Quebec Jean Charest named Mulcair Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks. During his tenure he was a supporter of the Kyoto Protocol.

Advocate for improved environmental rights

On November 25, 2004, Mulcair launched Quebec's Sustainable Development Plan and tabled a draft bill on sustainable development. Also included was a proposed amendment to the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms to create a new right, the right to live in a healthy environment that respects biodiversity, in accordance with the guidelines and standards set out in the Act. Mulcair's Sustainable Development Plan was based on the successful European model and was described as one of the most avant-garde in North America. Mulcair followed the proposal by embarking on a 21-city public consultation tour, and the Act was unanimously adopted by the National Assembly in April 2006.

Accomplishments related to infrastructure included the completion of Autoroute 30 between Vaudreuil and Brossard, Autoroute 50 between Gatineau and Lachute, the widening of Route 175 between Stoneham and Saguenay, the widening of Route 185 from Rivière-du-Loup and New Brunswick and the introduction of a toll bridge which would complete Autoroute 25 between Montreal and Laval , despite some public opposition by environmental groups.

Faces demotion by quitting Cabinet

During a Cabinet shuffle, Charest offered Mulcair the position of Minister of Government Services, and Mulcair chose to resign from cabinet rather than accept the demotion. There was speculation that his contrary opinion on the Mont Orford project lead to his removal as Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks.

On February 20, 2007, he announced that he would not be a Liberal candidate in the 2007 Quebec general election.

Federal politics

On Friday April 20, 2007, Mulcair confirmed that he would be running for the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the next federal election. His presence in the front row during a speech in Montreal by NDP Leader Jack Layton in March 2007 had already led to speculations to that effect. He had previously given a speech at the Federal NDP Convention in Quebec City in September 2006. Mulcair admits that he also had considered offers from other federal parties. However, he claims that he declined joining the Conservatives, because they have shown no interest in becoming more pro-active about the environment or respecting the Kyoto Protocol.

Wins by-election

Mulcair also became Layton's Quebec lieutenant. On June 21, 2007, in an uncontested nomination, Mulcair became the NDP's candidate in the riding of Outremont for a by-election on September 17. Mulcair won the by-election, defeating Liberal candidate Jocelyn Coulon 48% to 29%; the seat had been a Liberal stronghold since 1935. Jean Lapierre suggested that Mulcair was likely aided by defecting Bloc Quebecois supporters (the Bloc candidate had finished second in the 2006 federal election). In addition, Coulon's writings had been condemned by B'nai Brith Canada, and the local Jewish community in Outremont makes up 10% of the riding demographics. The Conservatives focused their attacks on the leadership skills of Stéphane Dion, and there were allegations that Michael Ignatieff's supporters tried to sabotage the race for the Liberals to undermine Dion's leadership.

Mulcair was only the second NDP Member of Parliament ever elected from Quebec, following Phil Edmonston in 1990 (one previous MP, Robert Toupin of Terrebonne, had crossed the floor to the NDP in 1986). Mulcair is also only the second non-Liberal ever to win Outremont, following Jean-Pierre Hogue in 1988.

Deputy leader

He and colleague Libby Davies were jointly appointed deputy leaders of the party. Mulcair was sworn in on October 12, 2007.

On October 14, 2008, Mulcair was re-elected the Member of Parliament for Outremont, making him the first New Democrat to win a riding in Quebec during a federal general election. He defeated the federal Liberal candidate, Sébastien Dhavernas, by 14,348 votes to 12,005 (a margin of 6.4%).

In the 2011 federal election, despite facing a strong challenge from Liberal Martin Cauchon, a former federal justice minister, Mulcair was re-elected once more with 56.4% of the popular vote, 21,916 to 9,204.

Controversy over Osama bin Laden

In a May 2011 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television interview following Osama bin Laden's killing, Mulcair was asked whether the U.S. should "release pictures of Osama bin Laden". Mulcair answered "I don't think from what I've heard that those pictures exist, and if they do I'll leave that up to the American military." Mulcair's answer was initially interpreted as casting doubt on the existence of photos of bin Laden's corpse. It received attention from American media outlets and was criticized by Canadian politicians including Paul Dewar, Chris Alexander, and Marc Garneau. Mulcair later clarified that he had actually been referring to the question of whether any pictures exist showing bin Laden reaching for a gun before he was killed. He added that he never doubted American forces had killed bin Laden nor that the U.S. had photographs proving bin Laden was dead. Paul Wells of Maclean's, noted that the CBC interviewer, Evan Solomon failed to pose a clear question, thus leading to the miscommunication.

On May 26, 2011, Mulcair was named Opposition House Leader. He and Libby Davies have been deputy leaders of the NDP since 2007.

Considers leadership bid

Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton passed away on August 22, 2011, following a battle with cancer, and was honoured with a state funeral. Mulcair stated that Layton's death had hit him exceptionally hard, and that while he was considering a federal NDP leadership bid, he would need several weeks to make up his mind on that decision.

Personal

Mulcair's family background is bilingual. His maternal great-grandfather was former Quebec Premier Honoré Mercier, to whom he referred when he announced his return to politics: "My great grandfather was Honoré Mercier, so what else could you expect from me."

Mulcair is married to Catherine Pinhas, a psychologist who was born in France to a Turkish-Jewish family. The couple has two sons.

Nathan Cullen (born July 13, 1972) is a Canadian Member of Parliament for the riding of Skeena—Bulkley Valley in the Canadian House of Commons.

Early life

Born in Toronto, Ontario, he is a professional workshop and meeting facilitator, with over 10 years of experience, for his own company, Maravilla Consultants. Before becoming involved in politics, Cullen worked in community and economic development throughout Latin America, North America and Africa.

Politics

Cullen was elected to his first term as Member of Parliament for Skeena—Bulkley Valley at the age of 31, on June 28, 2004. He defeated Conservative incumbent Andy Burton by a margin of 1,272 votes. In each subsequent federal election Cullen has increased his share of the popular vote from 37% in 2004, to 48% in 2006 and 50% in 2008.

His riding is one of the largest federal ridings in Canada, covering over 300,000 square kilometres of northwestern British Columbia. The region's economy is resource based and focuses on forestry, mining, and fishing.

In Cullen's first term of office he was named the New Democratic Party’s national critic for three key portfolios: Environment, National Parks and Youth.

In December 2004, he was voted "Favourite Up-and-Comer Rookie Politician" in a survey of MPs by Ottawa politics newspaper ''The Hill Times''. He was also awarded the US Ambassador's Award as one of only two Canadian recipients.

In April 2006, Cullen introduced a Private Member's Bill (Bill C-307) to ban phthalates, a chemical in many plastics, from products intended for infants and toddlers. The bill passed through all stages in the House of Commons but died on the order paper in the Senate when the 39th Parliament was dissolved. The proposal was subsequently adopted by Government and in June 2009 new regulations were introduced to place restrictions on six phthalates.

As Environment Critic for the NDP he helped renegotiate the Conservative Government's Clean Air Act (C-30) with an all-party committee. The new act was called the Clean Air and Climate Change Act. The Conservatives refused to reintroduce the bill to the House at second reading and it died on the order paper in the House.

On June 4, 2008, the House of Commons passed C-377 (An Act to ensure Canada assumes its responsibilities in preventing dangerous climate change), a private member bill introduced by Jack Layton. Cullen had fully supported the bill from the beginning and was responsible for presenting the bill to the Environment committee and working it through the Government's six weeks of fillibuster. However, Bill C-377 died as it was still before the Senate when Parliament was dissolved for the 2008 Canadian federal election. The bill was reintroduced in the 40th Parliament as Climate Change Accountability Act (Bill C-311)

In 2009 Cullen conducted a contest in his constituency called Create Your Canada which challenges students between grades 5 and 12 to submit proposals for federal legislation. Two winners are picked each year and are flown to Ottawa to watch their submissions introduced in the House of Commons as private member's bills. In 2009, two bills were introduced including Bill C-399, which proposed a ban on the mining and export of asbestos, and Bill C-400, which encouraged the Government of Canada to support the development of cycling friendly infrastructure. Both bills remain on the order paper.

Following the election of October 2008, Cullen was named the New Democrat Critic for Natural Resources and Energy, a portfolio which he currently holds.

When Cullen is not in Ottawa or travelling in the riding, he lives with his wife Diana in Smithers.

Adrian Dix is a Canadian politician, currently serving as MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway in British Columbia and as leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 2005 election.

Aide to Glen Clark

From 1996 to 1999 he served as Chief of Staff to Premier Glen Clark. He was forced to resign from that position after it was revealed that he had produced a memo and then back-dated it while marking it with an official Executive Office of the Premier stamp in an effort to make it appear that Clark had instructed him to keep him at arms-length from the process of awarding casino licenses.

Member of the Legislative Assembly

Since 2005, Dix has served as the MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway. While serving first as the opposition critic for Children and Families then as the Health critic Dix built a reputation as aggressive and effective. He served his constituents by opposing the closing of Carleton Elementary School.

2011 NDP leadership race

The last candidate to publicly launch his leadership campaign Dix campaigned on a platform of eliminating the HST, seeking to rollback reductions in the corporate tax rate, supporting the redirection of carbon tax revenue to pay for public transit and infrastructure that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supporting an increase in the minimum wage rate to $10 per hour, creating a provincial child care system, restoring grants to the post-secondary students, reducing interest on student loans, and restoring the corporation capital tax on financial institutions.

His candidacy was endorsed by former interim-leader Joy McPhail, amongst others. Dix's campaign for the leadership sparked controversy when campaign workers showed up at the headquarters of the party at the cut-off for new memberships with thousands of membership forms and bags of cash. Five of the six other leadership candidates filed formal complaints after video emerged of NDP MLA Mable Elmore stapling $10 bills to the forms.

Leader of the BC NDP

Dix won the BC NDP leadership vote in the third and final round against Mike Farnworth, winning 52% of the vote.

Dix was born and raised in Vancouver. Dix lives in Vancouver with his wife Renée Saklikar.
