EXCLUSIVE: Local Musician Says He Was Denied Life-Saving Care Because of His T-Shirt
A well-known Nashville musician says he's been banned from Vanderbilt Medical Center and kicked off the hospital's kidney transplant list. Anthony Joyner says he was accused of making threats after he wore a Malcom X tshirt to a dialysis center."I put everything I had into playing bass," says Joyner. These days Anthony Joyner can't focus on his music because it's his health that's at risk."I lost my team of doctors, that's what's the most important to me because I've had them for so long and I trust them," says Joyner.Anthony says the trouble began in January when he wore a Malcom X tshirt to the Vanderbilt East Dialysis Center in Donelson."The moment I walked in, people said something to me like whoa," says Joyner. "That's kind of a radical shirt. It was just a shirt to me."After explaining the shirt, he and a social worker began discussing other business."She said you have to get this insurance done," says Joyner. "You have to get this taken care of because you don't want the transplant committee to kick you off the list. I jokingly said I'll blow um up. I don't know why I said it but we all joke and kid around with each other there. I physically touched her on her arm 6-8 times and said I'm just joking."That wasn't the end of it."This whole thing started as a misunderstanding," says Joyner. "I'm not saying this is a racial thing, but it's a misunderstanding."A police report was filed and in March Anthony learned he'd been banned from Vanderbilt Medical Center, the ...

Too many musicians?
Too many musicians?
Watch PressPausePlay: theneedledrop.com Of course everyone on the planet can't be a career musician. The economy couldn't possibly sustain such a world. However, are there just too many musicians releasing their music onto the internet right now? Could there ever possibly be such a thing as too much music on the internet? If there was such a thing, what would it look like? Do you feel great music is being drowned out by how much music is out there right now? Is the in calculable mass of music on the internet killing the art? Is it killing musical culture? theneedledrop.com http bit.ly bit.ly bit.ly theneedledrop.com

Carlos Santana Interview | Musician's Friend Exclusive
Carlos Santana Interview | Musician's Friend Exclusive
Santana's stunning performance at the original 1969 Woodstock Festival left the world hungry for the band's exciting blend of blues-rock with Latino Afro-Beat influences and sensuous, atmospheric grooves. Led by Carlos' passionate lead guitar, cool onstage composure, and uninhibited artistic freedom, the band has taken home 10 Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards among many other honors—evidence of their widespread influence and critical acclaim. What does Carlos enjoy most about it all? Reaching people's hearts through the directness and honesty of his playing. In this interview with Carlos Santana, he talks about how your artistic voice takes shape—mimicking your musical heroes is a fine place to start. Although Carlos' influences fell somewhere between BB King and Tito Puente, he realized his unique playing style still came shining through. Carlos emphasizes that the "supreme sauce," the place from which your best stuff comes, is at the heart's center. Your music is a sentiment, after all. Give it all you've got—heart, mind, and body! Whether your tunes are rooted in down-home blues or old-school funk, Carlos Santana's tip is to play from your heart: Arrive the moment your instrument is in your hands, quiet the mind chatter, and get out of your own way.
