Zuhal Olcay (née İşanç)(born 10 August 1957 in Üsküdar, Istanbul, Turkey) is a famous Turkish actress and singer.

Emre Aydın (born February 2, 1981) is a Turkish rock singer-songwriter. He has been referred to as ''emreaydın'' on his official site to establish a trademark. The singer won the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 in the "Europe's Favourite Act" category. He is also the former lead singer for the Turkish rock band 6. Cadde.

Biography

Emre Aydın was born in Isparta on 2 February 1981 as the first child of Şaban and Nermin Aydın, who are both pharmacists. He has a younger brother named Yiğit. In his early years the family moved to Antalya. Emre began playing saz at an early age and later opted for guitar. He graduated from Antalya Anadolu Lisesi (high school) and then studied economics at Dokuz Eylül University in İzmir, upon his parents' wish. In a 2009 interview Emre admitted that he never attended a musical conservatory, because he did not want to have his musical experience transformed into school lessons and exam sessions, which he thought would make him lose interest in music.

Career

Sing Your Song competition

In 2002, while at Dokuz Eylül University, Emre saw the advertisement of a musical competition, ''Sing Your Song'', aired by a domestic television channel, Show TV. The jury included well-known Turkish rock singer Koray Candemir. With a friend, Onur Ela, they decided to apply with Emre's own song, ''Dönersen'' (If you come back), and out of 1500 applicants, they won the competition. The song was selected by Universal Music into a selection album and their band, named 6. Cadde was offered a contract with Universal Music Turkey.

6. Cadde

6. Cadde (previously named EQ) was established in Izmir in 1999, by Emre Aydin and fellow students from the same university and published demo recordings for two songs, ''Rüyamdaki Aptal Kadın'' (Foolish Woman in my Dream) and ''Tesadüfen'' (By Chance) on the internet. The group went through major transforming during the years, with changing band members, the final set-up with Onur Ela applied for the musical competition ''Sing Your Song'', which they won. This made them possible to record their first professional album, produced by Haluk Kurosman and published by Universal Music Turkey in 2003. The recording was done in Istanbul in a month's time, while all-round production of the album took 2,5 months. The first single from the album was ''Sabuha'', previously sang by such arabesk performers like Ibrahim Tatlises. ''Sabuha'' came to life by one of the tasks the jury of ''Sing Your Song'' assigned to the participants, namely that each band had to cover a song outside of their own musical genre. The song was refurbished by 6. Cadde from a different musical approach, changing its style and arrangements, in less than 15 minutes, as they had forgotten about the task and hurriedly recorded ''Sabuha'' for next day's competition shooting. Later the song was re-recorded for the album. In an interview Kurosman gave away that the ''6. Cadde'' album was the rough mix of studio recordings, previously prepared for radio promotion, because his computer's hard disk became damaged, all the records vanished, and they did not have time to record them all over again. Soon after the first stocks arrived to the shops, Universal Music Turkey closed down, Onur Ela decided to leave the band, and Emre opted for a solo career.

Solo career

After 6. Cadde broke up, Emre returned to Izmir, where he went through a difficult phase of his life. He had difficulties at the university, in finding a new rent, and other personal problems that made him write most of the songs of his first solo album, "Afili Yalnızlık" (''Ostentatious Loneliness''), released by Sony BMG in 2006, after he was signed by former 6. Cadde producer Haluk Kurosman and talent manager Hadi Elazzi's own company, GRGDN. The album was recorded in the GRGDN studio in the Ulus district of Istanbul. Emre was assisted by renown Turkish musicians, bass guitar was played by Cem Bahtiyar of maNga, drums by İllker Baliç of Gripin, electric guitar by Tuğrul Akyüz of Vega and Kurosman himself also contributed as a musician. His first videoclip was shot for the title song, "Afili Yalnızlık", directed by cinematographer Yon Thomas, who has previously worked with, among others, Norah Jones and Slipknot. The storyline was also written by Thomas, who excluded the singer from the scenario of a narcissistic woman, played by Turkish actress Şebnem Dönmez. The story of the first video was extended to the following two videos, shot for "Kim Dokunduysa Sana" (Whoever Touched You) and "Git" (Go), the latter was also directed by Yon Thomas. Three more videos were shot, for "Belki Bir Gün Özlersin" (Maybe One Day You'll Miss), "Bu Kez Anladım" (I Understood It This Time) and "Dayan Yalnızlığım" (Endure, My Loneliness).

Emre's album quickly became a smash hit in Turkey, having won several awards, including ''Blue Jean Magazine's'' awards for Best Song, Best Newcomer, Best Music Video and his producer, Haluk Kurosman was named Best Producer. Emre also won the prestigious ''Powertürk Music Award'' as ''Best Newcomer'' in 2007 and a year later was awarded for the ''Best song'' and ''Best duet'' at the same gala (see Awards section for a full list of awards). The album received mostly positive criticism, according to Burhan Ayeri columnist, "Emre Aydın's performance at 2 Renk [a television programme] was extraordinary. With a good manager, he will sweep away Tarkan. As Özcan Deniz said, 'this is the first time we see all songs of an album being top hits'."

The singer is among the most frequently touring Turkish singers, in 2007 he gave 130 live concerts until August. Emre also completed his first European tour in 2008, composed of concerts in Bochum, Cologne and Rotterdam and performed in the Carling Academy, London on 11 May 2008.

On November 6, 2008 he won the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 as ''Europe's Favourite Act''. Upon this success, the singer decided to release an English single, planned for March 2009, which will be followed by his second Turkish album, ought to be released in May 2009.

The singer's popularity is effectively shown at his official forum, which had 79,000 registered members as of October 2007 and more than 150,000 as of October 2009.

Sezen Aksu (; born: Fatma Sezen Yıldırım; July 13, 1954 in Denizli) is a Turkish pop music singer, song-writer and producer who sold over 40 million albums worldwide. Her nicknames include the "Queen of Turkish Pop" and ''Minik Serçe'' ("Little Sparrow").

Aksu's influence on Turkish pop and world music has continued since her debut in 1975, and has been reinforced by her patronage of and collaboration with many other musicians, including Sertab Erener, Şebnem Ferah, Aşkın Nur Yengi, Hande Yener, and Levent Yüksel. Her work with Tarkan resulted in continental hits like "Şımarık" and "Şıkıdım," and her collaboration with Goran Bregović widened her international audience.

Biography

Sezen Aksu was born in Sarayköy, Turkey. Her family moved to İzmir when she was 3 years old and she spent her childhood and early youth there. Aksu's parents discouraged her singing because they wanted her to have a steady profession as a doctor or engineer. She used to wait until they left the house and sing on the family's balcony. After finishing high school, she began studying at the local agricultural institute, but left college to concentrate on music.

Along with her close friend Ajda Pekkan, Aksu is credited with laying the foundations of Turkish pop music in the 1970s. Her sound has also spread across the Balkans and Greece. It was this sound that changed the face of the Eurovision song contest when her protégé Sertab Erener won in 2003. Aksu has also toured in Europe and the U.S to critical appraise.

She has championed a variety of causes, including women's rights, the environment, and educational reform in Turkey. Aksu has been married and divorced four times, but kept the name from her second marriage to Ali Engin Aksu, a doctor of geology who currently resides in Canada. She has a son with Sinan Özer.

Career

Sezen Aksu released her first single, ''Haydi Şansım/Gel Bana'' (Come on My Luck/Come to Me) in 1975 under the name of Sezen Seley. However, she remained undiscovered until her 1976 single ''Olmaz Olsun/Vurdumduymaz'' (Wish It Never Happened/Insensitive) reached number one in the Turkish charts. Her first album was 1978's ''Serçe'' (Sparrow), which was to give her the nickname, penned by a Turkish journalist.

An Aksu drive finally got Turkey to apply for the Eurovision Song contest in the mid-70s. Ironically however, even though she competed in the national finals for the competition three times - "Küçük Bir Aşk Masalı" (A Little Love Tale) was a duet with Özdemir Erdoğan, "Heyamola" was performed as a trio with Coşkun Demir and Ali Kocatepe and "1945" was her solo performance - none got the chance to represent Turkey abroad. It was to be left to her pupil Erener to win the Eurovision and realise Aksu's dream to push her musical vision further into Europe.

In the 80's, Aksu had a relationship with producer Onno Tunç that was both romantic and professional. As a couple they put their signatures to works that broke new ground in Turkish pop music, such as ''Sen Ağlama'' (Don't Cry), ''Git'' (Go), ''Sezen Aksu'88'' and ''Sezen Aksu Söylüyor'' (Sezen Aksu Sings). Her music matured in the 90's, when she co-produced her best selling album to-date ''Gülümse'' (Smile) with Tunç. The A-1 track from the album called ''Hadi Bakalım'' (Come On Now) was a hit in Turkey and Europe, and was published as a single in Germany. It was to be later rediscovered in Europop by singer Loona as Rhythm of the Night. She also began to produce albums for her vocalists, notably producing Aşkın Nur Yengi's debut album ''Sevgiliye'' (To a Lover) again with Tunç. She was to repeat her success with artists Erener and Yüksel also.

Parting ways with Tunç, in 1995, Aksu branched out with the experimental album ''Işık Doğudan Yükselir'' (Light Rises From the East), drawing both on western classical and regional Turkish musical traditions. This album made her name outside Turkey and gave her a world music following across Europe. In 1996, she released ''Düş Bahçeleri'' (Dream Gardens) as a tribute to Tunç, who died that same year tragically when his private plane crashed. In 1997, she released ''Düğün ve Cenaze'' (The Wedding And The Funeral), this time collaborating with Goran Bregović.

She returned to her roots with ''Adı Bende Saklı'' (Its Name Is Hidden In Me), which was released in 1998. She began to use experimental sounds and was once again pushing Turkish pop into the future. Aksu continued with this trend with her subsequent albums ''Deliveren'' (Crazymaker), ''Şarkı Söylemek Lazım'' (Gotta Sing) which also featured former Sparks bassist Martin Gordon as engineer/mixer (and also as bass player on her subsequent European tour), ''Yaz Bitmeden'' (Before The Summer Ends) between the years 2000 - 2003. After a two year hiatus, she returned with ''Bahane'' (Excuse) in 2005. That same year she released ''Kardelen'' (Snowdrop) where all proceeds went to charity, and before the end of 2005 released a ''Bahane/Remixes'' (Excuse/Remixes) double-CD album which contained the original ''Bahane'' album in disc one and the remixes of songs in Bahane in disc two. At the end of the year her albums ''Bahane'', ''Kardelen'' and the re-released album ''Şarkı Söylemek Lazım'' were the three best-selling albums in the country.

In 2005 she was featured in Fatih Akin's documentary film "Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul" with a performance of the song "Istanbul Hatirasi."

Aksu has recently been re-releasing all her old classics digitally remastered and with specially designed new sleeves. After her concert tour in summer 2006.

Sezen Aksu performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, on 7 October 2007. After Zeki Muren, she was only the second Turkish artist to perform at the prestigious venue.

In 2008 Aksu released her album called ''Deniz Yıldızı'' through Starfish Records. And in 2009 she released her latest album ''Yürüyorum Düş Bahçelerinde'' which sold over 100 000 copies during the first week of its release. The album contains new original songs as well as some older songs which were composed by Sezen Aksu for other singers, most notably ''Çakkıdı'', ''Kibir'', ''Yok Ki''.

Ayşe Ajda Pekkan (, born February 12, 1946, in Istanbul, Turkey) is a Turkish pop singer and actress. Through a career spanning five decades thus far, Pekkan has released more than 20 albums and, with Sezen Aksu, is the most commercially successful female Turkish music artist with the sales of over 30 million copies worldwide. She is nicknamed the "Superstar" of Turkish pop music. Although famed for her music, Pekkan started her career as an actress with appearances in almost 50 films. During her music career, Pekkan has recorded songs in nine languages. Apart from Turkish, she is also fluent in English and French.

Early life

Pekkan was born to Rıdvan Pekkan, an officer in the Turkish Navy, and Nevin Dobruca, a housewife. She spent her childhood at the Naval Base Gölcük in Kocaeli Province. Ajda graduated from the ''Çamlıca Kız Lisesi'', an elite and high-profile girls' secondary school in Istanbul that had been incorporated under the Ottoman Empire. Graduates include foreign nobility and female members of the Imperial House of Osman. Language of instruction is in Turkish and French.

Career

With the help of her sister, Semiramis, she began singing at the popular Istanbul nightclub ''Çatı'' (Roof) in 1962. The following year, Pekkan won a ''Cover Star'' contest sponsored by the Turkish music magazine ''Ses'' ("Voice") and was launched on a professional career.

Between 1963 and 1967, the statuesque actress appeared in 47 films opposite popular Turkish actors, mostly in singer roles. Pekkan’s first recording, "Her Yerde Kar Var", an arrangement of Salvatore Adamo's "Tombe la Neige" by Fecri Ebcioğlu, brought her great success in 1965. In contrast to many of her contemporaries, she transited from film to music and in 1968 her record, ''İki Yabancı'' (''Two Strangers''), became a top seller. Pekkan’s continuing success resulted in invitations to international festivals including the Apollonia Music Festival in Athens (1968 and 1969) and the Mediterranean Song Festival in Barcelona (1969).

The success of her songs resulted in a series of Turkish-language concerts with Enrico Macias at the Paris Olympia in 1976. In acknowledgement of her nickname, Pekkan released an album called ''Superstar'' in 1977. The same year, she participated in the Yamaha Music Festival in Tokyo to great success. She released German and French records in the early 1970s, and her ''Pour Lui'', became very successful in France. At this pinnacle, she released her second album ''Süperstar II'' in 1979.

On April 19, 1980, Pekkan represented Turkey with the entry "Petr'Oil" at the Eurovision Song Contest in Den Haag, the Netherlands. She then decided to take a break and temporarily moved to the USA. After returning to Turkey, she recorded two failed albums, ''Sen Mutlu Ol'' (You be happy) and ''Sevdim Seni'' (''I Loved You'') in the then current trend of Turkish music, but returned to her original type of Western pop and gave concerts in 1983 with enormous success. That same year, she released ''Süperstar III'' which she followed with ''Süperstar IV'' (1987). Superstar III was a huge success; coincidentally, it is her only album that is not available on CD. However, Superstar IV wasn't succeeded as Superstar III. It was last album on LP. She married with Mehmet Ali Bars, who is a businessman, in 1984 and divorced in 1990.

In late 1989, she began working on her an album with famous Turkish musicians including Fuat Güner from MFÖ (the band which represented Turkey in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1985 and 1988), Şehrazat, and Metin Özülkü. The album, simply titled ''Ajda 1990'' signalled a new breakthrough for Pekkan, with sales of over a million. With the success of this official debut album (and also the first on CD), she immediately began working on her next album.

In 1991, she released ''Seni Seçtim'' (''I Choose You''), to even greater success. Hits like "Sevgide Seni Seçtim" ("I Choose You For Love"), "Eline Gözüne Dizine Dursun" ("Shame on You"), "Vazgeçme" ("Don’t Give Up"), she topped all the charts in Turkey.

In 1993, she released ''Ajda ‘93'' which she recorded this album in Switzerland, Turkey and United States. She worked with Atilla Şereftuğ on this album, a famous Turkish musician who had written the Eurovision ’88-winning song "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi" ("Don’t Leave Without Me") for Celine Dion. The hits of the album were ''Sarıl Bana'' (''Give Me a Hug''), ''Oyalama Beni'' (''Don't Occupy Me''), Eyvah (''Alas!'') and Ağlama Anne (''Don't Cry Mommy'').

After many successful albums she decided to release a best of album, and in September 1998, she released ''The Best of Ajda''. Two years later, in 2000, Pekkan released another studio album, simply called ''Diva'' and enjoyed sales of over two million copies.

In 2001, she started performing in an Istanbul club ''Catwalk'' and her performances were all sold out, with the help of an eager audience looking forward to see "the superstar" after a three year hiatus. The performances were so successful that Pekkan postponed closing the show by about six months.

In 2002, she also began making a movie called ''Şöhret Sandalı'' (''Boat of Fame''). After several years of financial setbacks, it was released in 2006.

In the summer 2003, she released her single ''Sen İste'' (''Just Want It''), written by her friend Şehrazat, the popular songwriter. Six years later,in August 2006, Pekkan released her latest album ''Cool Kadın'' (''Cool Woman''). This album produced the number one dance hit single ''Vitrin'' and a funky disco beat called "Amazon". During the first six months over 800.000 copies of ''Cool Kadın'' was sold just in Turkey.

In the summer 2007 she began a completely sold out concert series called ''Ajda goes Disco'' performing her songs in disco rhythms with Turkey's most famous DJs live on stage. After that, Pekkan quickly began to work on a new studio album, recording it in Turkey. The album "Aynen Oyle" was released in Turkey, German and USA on July 23, 2008. To promote it, Pekkan began touring in Turkey where she performed two new songs "Flu Gibi" and "Gerisi Hikaye" from the album.
