Isaiah Wilner - "The Man Time Forgot"
Complete program at: fora.tv Author Isaiah Wilner describes the unusual friendship between Britton Hadden and Henry Luce, the two co-founders of Time Magazine. ----- Isaiah Wilner explores the controversial, never-before-told story of how Briton Hadden forever changed American media - creating Time Magazine with Henry R. Luce - and how Luce betrayed him in "The Man Time Forgot." Friends, collaborators, and childhood rivals, Hadden and Luce are not yet twenty-five when they start the nation's first newsmagazine at the outset of the Roaring Twenties. Millionaires at thirty, together they lay the foundation for a media empire. But their partnership is explosive and their rivalry ferocious, inspired by envy as well as love. When Hadden dies at the age of thirty-one, Luce begins to bury the legacy of the giant he was never able to best. Wilner paints a fascinating portrait of a man whose mind dreams of everything, from the weekly newsmagazine to Life, Sports Illustrated, and the radio quiz show, traveling from the tomb of Yale's storied secret society, Skull and Bones, to high-society Europe and South America, following the friendship of two brilliant and opposite souls who inspire one another to the pinnacle of earthly success. Hadden's Time -- the magazine his idea -- sets the course for modern journalism into the twenty-first century. The 28-year-old author of "The Man Time Forgot" discovered the story while editing the Yale Daily News, where he worked under a dusty ...

Rethinking Religion and World Affairs
For more on this event, visit: bit.ly For more on the Berkley Center, visit: berkleycenter.georgetown.edu May 1st, 2012 | The Berkley Center hosted the launch of an unprecedented new volume Rethinking Religion and World Affairs (Oxford, 2012), edited by Timothy Shah, Alfred Stepan, and Monica Toft, and produced under the auspices of the Social Science Research Council through the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation. Too often steeped in a secularist mindset, academics, policy makers, and opinion shapers have only just begun to reckon with the varied impact of religion on global politics, society, media, gender issues, diplomacy, and economic development. Rethinking Religion and World Affairs documents how scholars, policy professionals, and journalists are now grappling with global religious dynamics and influences. The launch of the book featured the volume's editors as well as three of its contributors: Michael Barnett of George Washington University and Thomas Farr and Katherine Marshall, both of the Berkley Center. The panel asked: How much real progress has been made in "rethinking religion and world affairs" in the worlds of scholarship and policy making? And what further progress is needed, particularly in terms of new concepts, methods, and research agendas?

Historians, Journalists & the Challenges of Getting It Right (AUDIO)
Jan. 7, 2012: Historians, Journalists, and the Challenges of Getting It Right: Publishing in the American Century Historians, Journalists & the Challenges of Getting It Right, the Lear Center's newest project, debuted January 6, 2012 in Chicago at the 126th annual American Historical Association conference. A partnership of the Lear Center, USC Annenberg's Center for Communication Leadership & Policy, and the American Historical Association's National History Center, Getting It Right begins with the premise that both professions, historians and journalists, are in the business of finding and assessing evidence, of analyzing events and of narrating events. Both are storytellers. Both could enhance their work by learning from each other, by establishing networks that connect them, by sharing expertise and by sharing practical knowledge about media and methods. In order to explore what these professions have in common and where they differ, to begin to understand what each of these professions mean by "getting it right," to examine the impact of journalism on history and of history on journalism, we began at AHA with four case studies: American Biography and the Cold War; Publishing in the American Century; Interpreting the Arab Spring; American Intervention. Lear Center Director Marty Kaplan moderated the panel on publishing, with Alan Brinkley (Columbia University; author of an acclaimed Henry Luce biography) presenting, joined by panelists Michael Kazin (Georgetown ...

#25 The Most Powerful Man In The World? The "Black Pope"
So, Spellman was overseeing the whole thing, with Henry Luce. And, if you get Luce And His Empire, there is a picture in there of Cardinal Spellman, Luce, Grace, Clare Boothe Luce, and Dean Rusk, on the 1963, 4-year anniversary of Time magazine in the Waldorf Astoria, only months before the Kennedy assassination. And there's Dean Rusk, the architect of the Vietnam War, according to the words of his own son. Ok, who's the other one? Howard Hunt. Howard Hunt is a CIA agent, of course. He said he was never in Dallas the day of the assassination, but Mark Lane proved that he was. Thank God for Mark Lane. Here's another Jew getting in the way of the Vatican. Just like Daniel Ellsberg—here's another Jew getting in the way of the Vatican's Vietnam War. You see Jews who are getting in the way of the Vatican, and the Jesuits are furious about it. So here's Mark Lane; he's openly defeated William F. Buckley in court before; now he proves that Howard Hunt is a CIA agent, in Dallas the day of the assassination. The jury came forward with that verdict, and who is Howard Hunt? Howard Hunt is a personal friend of Henry Luce, a correspondent for Time-Life. He's a personal friend of William F. Buckley. He goes to one of Buckley's parties at the New York Yacht Club. He knows them both. He knows two of the High Knights.

US Ambassador to Italy: Clare Boothe Luce Interview (1952)
thefilmarchive.org Clare Boothe Luce (March 10, 1903 -- October 9, 1987) was one of the first American women ambassadors, a versatile author, and wife of Henry Luce, publisher of Time, Life and Fortune. Her writings extended across fashion journalism, war-reporting and drama, notably the play The Women with its all-female cast. Politically she was a lifelong right-wing Republican, twice a Congresswoman for Connecticut, who campaigned for Eisenhower in 1952. This earned her the job of Ambassador to Italy, where she promoted her strong anti-communist beliefs. The Clare Boothe Luce Program continues to provide support for women in science, mathematics and engineering. Luce returned to politics during the 1952 presidential election, when she campaigned on behalf of Republican candidate Dwight Eisenhower. Her support was rewarded with an appointment as Ambassador to Italy, confirmed by the Senate in March 1953. Meeting Pope Pius XII, she allegedly instructed him to be tougher on communism in defense of the Church, prompting the Pontiff to reply, "You know, Mrs. Ambassador, I am a Catholic too." In 1957 she was awarded the Laertare Medal as an outstanding Catholic layperson. She also received honorary degrees from both Fordham and Temple universities. As ambassador, Luce threatened to boycott the 1955 Venice Film Festival if the juvenile delinquent film Blackboard Jungle was shown. She addressed the issue of anticommunism and the Italian labor movement and helped settle the ...
