Helicopter Close Call Take Off with a Robinson R44 Raven II Near Rotor Strike Accident at Cape Town International Aerodrome (FACT) Base 4 Helipad, South Africa on 14th May 2005. The South African Civil Aviation Authority Incident Report -- Executive Summary states - "The pilot, accompanied by three passengers departed from the Base4 helipad at Cape Town International Aerodrome for a local pleasure flight of the Cape Peninsula. After being airborne for approximately 40 minutes they returned for a full stop landing. An aviation enthusiast that was standing nearby filmed the approach and intended landing. The video footage was made available to the investigating team and revealed that the aircraft was established in hover flight approximately 6 feet above the ground overhead the helipad. The pilot descended gradually with the right skid touching first. As the skid touched the aircraft was observed to pitch/tilt forward suddenly with the lower nose fuselage making contact with the ground. The pilot reacted almost immediately by applying backpressure on the cyclic stick, which caused the aircraft to fall back onto its skids, with the tail rotor guard nearly impacting the ground. It then pitched forward again with the pilot applying power, he took-off, flew a circuit and executed an uneventful landing. Nobody was injured in the incident. Following an interview with the passenger that was occupying the left front seat, he mentioned that he was readjusting his seatbelt shortly before touchdown and accidentally touched the cyclic control column that emerges from the floor centre console with his right knee, which caused the pilot to take immediate corrective action."

We are told a HELICOPTER far outweighs fixed-wing aircraft in terms of accuracy for agricultural use. Slower speeds allow a helicopter’s pilot to precisely drop fertiliser or weed control sprays onto paddocks.
Apparently the spray drops like rain, it’s super accurate, there’s no drift. and a helicopter can move around crops.”
In Tasmania, the helicopter spraying system is a cost effective alternative compared to traditional aerial spray methods.
Super phosphate can be sprayed from $18 a hectare, while thistle spraying can be done from $20 a hectare.
New grass paddocks can be sprayed in the autumn, thistles in winter and fertiliser in spring. Helicopters don’t need a purpose-built airstrip they can do everything from dead-flat to a hilly terrain.

Robinson R44
The Robinson R44 is a four-seat light helicopter produced by the Robinson Helicopter Company since 1992. Based on the company's two-seat Robinson R22, the R44 features hydraulically assisted flight controls. The R44 was first flown on 31 March 1990, and received FAA certification in December 1992, with the first delivery in February 1993.
Design and development
The R44 is a single-engined helicopter with a semi-rigid two-bladed main rotor and a two-bladed tail rotor and a skid landing gear. It has an enclosed cabin with two rows of side-by-side seating for a pilot and three passengers. Tail rotor direction of rotation on the R44 is reversed compared to the R22 for improved yaw control authority. On the R44 the advancing blade is on the bottom.
Designed during the 1980s by Frank Robinson and his staff of engineers, the R44 first flew on 31 March 1990. The R44 Astro was awarded an FAA Type Certificate in December 1992, with the first deliveries taking place in January 1993. In January 2000, Robinson introduced the Raven with hydraulically assisted controls and adjustable pedals. In July 2002, Robinson introduced the Raven II featuring a more powerful, fuel-injected engine and wider blades, allowing a higher gross weight and improved altitude performance.

The pilot reacted almost immediately by applying backpressure on the cyclic stick, which caused the aircraft to fall back onto its skids, with the tail rotor guard nearly impacting the ground. It then pitched forward again with the pilot applying power, he took-off, flew a circuit and executed an uneventful landing. Nobody was injured in the incident. Following an interview with the passenger that was occupying the left front seat, he mentioned that he was readjusting his seatbelt shortly before touchdown and accidentally touched the cyclic control column that emerges from the floor centre console with his right knee, which caused the pilot to take immediate corrective action." -
