Potsdam Germany
Having always wanted to visit Berlin, I was very excited when I was asked to join a press trip focusing on the Castles, Parks and Gardens of Eastern Germany. We landed in Berlin, but that was as close as we got to the city, because we were staying at the Relaxa Schlosshotel Cecilienhof in Potsdam, adjoined to the Palace of Cecilienhof which was the place where Stalin, Churchill and Truman met at the Potsdam Conference in August 1945. The Potsdam Conference led mainly to the separation of Berlin and the rest of Germany between the occupying powers, and to discuss the terms of the Japanese surrender. The Palace of Cecilienhof was owned by Crown Prince Wilhelm Hohenzollern, the last Palace built by that family. Emporer Wilhelm II had built it as a wedding gift when the crown prince married Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Built in the style of an English Tudor house, it caused some consternation while it was being built between the years of 1914 and 1917. The war delayed the construction but within one year of moving in Crown Prince Wilhelm had to flee into exile after the German defeat. Cecilie, meanwhile remained there until 1945 when the Red Army came marching in. Queen Elisabeth stayed here in 2004 and in 2007 the G8 leaders summit was held here. Potsdam was traditionally the home of the Kings of Germany, including Frederick the Great who lived in the summer Palace of Sans-Souci. The palace was designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff between 1745 and 1747 ...

Germany: Potsdam - The Sanssouci Park
Germany: Potsdam - The Sanssouci Park
The 287-hectare Castle Park dates from 1725. It was located where once was an orchard. With the construction of the Castle Sanssouci between 1745-1747 the Royal Seat of the Brandenburg-Prussian rulers, master builders and artists started to create a fascinating ensemble of palaces, parks and gardens in the time span of only three centuries. An important person in the history of the park was Frederick the Great (1712-1786), King of Prussia. However, it was not until the 19th century that the idea of Potsdam as a "paradise isle" became a reality, thanks to the landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné. He united the various palaces and parks into a unique park landscape, which was designated as a "world cultural heritage site" by UNESCO in 1990. This video just gives you an small impression of the Sanssouci Park. To enjoy all its beauty you need several days!

Potsdam 1933 in Farbe

World Heritage in Potsdam #01 - Sanssouci Palace
World Heritage in Potsdam #01 - Sanssouci Palace
It seems a journey through time, visiting Potsdam close by Berlin. We start in 1745 when the Prussian Frederick the Great of Hohenzollern built Sanssouci. Potsdam grew to a sizeable city, but it met dark times. There the setbacks of the world wars, accompanying Nazidom, and after that the leaders of the socialist utopia of the DDR came steamrolling over it. But Sanssouci Palace survived the wiles of the many twisted heads of state. The castle was built in the Rococo style, with a hint of baroque and actually has only twelve rooms. In fact it was there only to enjoy the Muses. Music, literature and philosophy, that was what it was all about for Frederick, but in an ambiance of exuberant elegance, as demonstrated by the famous Marble Hall Info HighRes imagery: www.stockshot.nl © All Rights reserved by Fauna Film BV www.faunafilm.nl Information at www.stockshot.nl
