Adelina PATTI ~ PUR DICESTI (1905)
Pur Dicesti / (Lotti) / Adelina Patti (1843-1919) / accompanied by Landon Ronald / Recorded: December 1905 at Patti's residence, Craig-y-Nos Castle in Wales / Speed: between 73-74 rpm LYRICS (in Italian): Pur dicesti, o bocca bella, Quel soave e caro sì, Che fatutto il mio piacer. Per onor di sua facella Con un bacio Amor t'aprì, Dolce fonte del goder, ah! (English translation) Beautiful mouth, at last you have spoken That gentle, lovable "yes" That makes my joy complete In his own honor Love has opened you with a kiss, O sweet fountain of pleasure ****************************** ITEM: To reduce blasting a soft needle has been used with a rebuilt Victor No. 2 reproducer (apologies to purists) on a vintage Victor V phonograph machine. The record, as can be sonically determined, is in a markedly lesser condition than a mint or even excellent copy. The William R. Moran discography of Patti's recorded legacy places turntable speed at 73.47 rpm, which has been attempted, though stability therein is not always a certainty with the old mechanisms. A microphone has been placed inside the horn, backed with foam rubber, to muzzle the sounds of passing traffic (revving engines, the occasional horn, not to mention police, ambulance and fire sirens... comical at times). Lastly, there has been no digital filtering. The gold standard for digital sound transfers remains in the hands of the professionals. ******************************

coloratura Adelina Patti -1895 cylinder- her 1st record?
Coloratura soprano ADELINA PATTI sings "The Laughing Song" from Auber's comic opera, "Manon." This exceedingly rare recording, privately made for Patti on a brown wax cylinder, was discovered in the 1940's and transferred to a acetate 78 rpm disc by Wm. Seltsam (1897-1968) of Bridgeport, Conn. Understand that THIS IS THE OLDEST EXISTING RECORDING of a world-class opera singer and one of the first operatic recordings by anyone! DO NOT EXPECT HIGH FIDELITY; this is ancient sound. Listen carefully as the announcer gives Patti's name and the selection. It is generally stated that Patti's first recordings were made in 1905. It was in this year that her first DISC records were made....but not her first recording! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Adelina Patti, the greatest soprano of her day, will always be associated with her castle in the Upper Swansea Valley. She gave it the romantic name of Craig-y-Nos - the Rock of Night. Born in Madrid of Italian parentage on 19 February 1843, Adelina Patti was raised in New York and gave her first concert there at the age of seven. Patti first sang at Covent Garden, London, in 1845. From then on, her international career was assured. As a bel canto coloratura soprano she had no rival. Giuseppe Verdi thought she was the greatest singer he had ever heard. Wherever she sang, the public adored her, and she made a fortune. After her first marriage failed, she took a lover, the married French tenor Ernest Nicolini. In search of privacy, and ...

Adelina Patti - Ah, non credea mirarti & Casta Diva (1906)
Adelina Patti (1843-1919) remains one of the most famous sopranos in history due to the pure beauty of her lyric voice and the unsurpassed quality of her bel canto technique. Giuseppe Verdi was not alone in calling her the greatest vocalist that he ever heard. Patti cut these (gramophone) recordings in 1906. By then she was aged in her 60s, with her voice well past its prime. Nonetheless, the limpid purity of her tone and the smoothness of her legato line remain uniquely impressive. The records also display a lively singing personality as well as a surprisingly strong chest voice and a mellow timbre. Her trill is wonderful and her diction excellent. In the issue of "Opera News" March 2009 edition, there is an article by Peter G. Davis, titled "Awake and Sing" on the new Met production of La Sonnambula with Nathalie Dessay. According to this article, Adelina Patti is still regarded as one of the best interpreter of this aria "Ah, non credea mirarti" despite the fact that she was 63 when she recorded it. Sadness, hopelessness, bewilderment are all there in this amazing performance. "Casta Diva"... to begin with, she takes breaths where she shouldn't (such as between "Casta" and "Diva"); the aria is transposed downwards to make her more comfortable; at the 'commas' of the climax she interrupts her sound completely (unlike Adalgisa Gabbi or Maria Callas); the descending scales are downright inaccurate (but done in a smooth, shimmering way); declamatory passages (the voice ...

From a Castle in Wales
From a Castle in Wales is a promotional Trailer exploring the themes of loss and imprisonment. Written and Directed by Tracy Williams and shot on location at Craig y Nos Castle, South Wales, which was owned by opera diva Adelina Patti. It’s a story about yearning for home, and how home is ultimately where the darkness is. It’s about imprisonment and how the past has such a strong hold over the present that the future results in insanity.

1905 VICTOR "PATTI" RECORD By Adelina Patti, Opera Legend, "OLD FOLKS AT HOME" On Victor Phonograph
As a result of many requests for early opera recordings from my collection I have unearthed a few of my early Adelina Patti (1843-1919) recordings. Recorded on the scarce VICTOR "PATTI" RECORD label (dedicated solely to her recordings - a VERY unusual honor by the Victor Talking Machine Company for a precious few opera legends), this is Patti's immortal rendition of "Old Folks At Home". Well past her prime by the time recording was available, Adelina Patti was still able to provide the listener with a glimpse of her legendary voice. I must confess that I'm not a fan of opera but I do appreciate all very early recordings and I will always treasure my early VICTOR "PATTI" records. About 17 years ago I purchased a group of very early opera records that included a number of these VICTOR "PATTI" records as well as VICTOR "MELBA" records. Thanks for stopping in and I hope you enjoy the video.

Adelina Patti - Ah, non credea mirarti (1906) - A distant echo from a bygone age
Sadness, hopelessness, bewilderment are all there in this amazing performance. Listen to her 'pianto' (2:11). It is one of the most amazing sounds I've ever heard... ADELINA PATTI (1843-1919) remains one of the most famous sopranos in history due to the pure beauty of her lyric voice and the unsurpassed quality of her bel canto technique. Giuseppe Verdi was not alone in calling her the greatest vocalist that he ever heard. She was born in Madrid to Italian parents, and raised in New York. She made her operatic debut at the Academy of Music, New York in 1859, aged 16, where she performed the title role of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. In 1861, she took the soprano role of Amina in Bellini's La Sonnambula in Covent Garden, which demonstrated her outstanding talent. She furthered her career by performing on an international level, became highly successful, and was adored by her audiences. She built a 150-seat theatre at her house 'Craig-y-Nos' in the Upper Swansea Valley and conducted many private concerts there, performing long after her official retirement. She produced approximately 30 gramophone recordings of songs and operatic arias, which have since been "remastered" (disgraziati!...) and reissued on CD. Patti cut these (gramophone) recordings during 1905 and 1906. By then she was aged in her 60s, with her voice well past its prime. Nonetheless, the limpid purity of her tone and the smoothness of her legato line remain uniquely impressive. The records also display a ...

Jewel Song from Faust - Mme. Adelina Patti - 1905 Gramophone & Typewriter Co. Record
Here from the Historic First Recording session of famed 19th Century Opera Diva Adelina Patti, is the Jewel Song from Gounod's Faust. This was from the first of two recording sessions done by William and Fred Gaisberg on behalf the Gramophone & Typewriter Co. Ltd of Great Britain, on location at her Castle "Craig-y-Nos" in Wales. According to his recollections in the "The Music goes Round" published in 1942, Fred Gaisberg stated this about the recording session "When Madame Patti entered the room she was terribly intrigued as to what was behind that long horn. She had the curiosity of a girl, and peeped under the curtain to see what was on the other side. It was an ordeal for her to sing into this small funnel, while standing still in one position. It was my job to pull her back when she made those beautiful attacks on the high notes. At first she did not like this and was most indignant, but later when she heard the lovely records she showed her joy just like a child and forgave me my impertinence. Another bright spot was when we bought these records for her to hear some weeks afterwards. The records we played to Patti and her husband we could truly say were exceptionally good, and Patti was not disappointed in the sacrifice she had made to carry out this recording. " Landon Ronald was the pianist for this very first "Patti" recording session, and according to Gaisberg, he was instrumental in carry out the negotiations with Patti, that made the sessions possible.
