Knowing versus believing: why the world did not end

Many of the programs that affect the most vulnerable Americans-the poor, women, children, and the elderly-are encompassed in approximately three trillion dollars worth of cuts that the House of Representatives proposes to make over the next 10 years in programs that help low-income individuals and their families.

Consider that the House Budget Committee's FY2012 budget resolution would make at least two-thirds of its cuts from low-income programs, including a 20% reduction in Medicaid, a nearly 19% reduction in education programs, and devastating reductions in food stamps and housing assistance. It would also eliminate funding for health care reform provisions, thereby keeping health insurance out of reach for millions of people.

Connect via email to your legislators in Washington and take action on the budget now at: http://episcopal.grassroots.com/issues/budget_action/#ActionForm. You will find a sample letter and an "action page" that make it easy to contact your legislators. Please join us in this advocacy. (Even if you are not an Episcopalian, we need your help!)

Subject: Say no to cuts

Dear Friend,

The House just voted to make huge cuts in this year’s budget. Poverty-fighting priorities--which make up less than one percent of the US budget--were sharply cut.

Now it’s the Senate’s turn to weigh in on the budget--and we’ve got to tell them to preserve this life-saving funding. Cuts to these life-saving programs will have a real, immediate, and devastating impact on the world’s poor.

I just signed this petition asking the Senate not to make cuts. Will you sign it, too?

Together as ONE we can make a difference.

Thanks!

We sponsor the diocesan MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) and will be proposing a specific program to be sponsored next year with a matching grant: our parishioners have been actively involved in building the new primary school and school cafeteria in Ye Sumo village in Liberia, now with 335 children ages 5-12 registered--many are orphans and other children displaced by the three wars which occurred in LIberia from 1995-2003.  The peace is now stable, thanks to the good work of the United Nations and United African peacekeepers.  What is now underway at the new school is a water well, pump, and water storage facility directly at the school site, since now the children and staff have to haul the water for cooking twice a day from a stream over half a mile away for each meal.  The school is a "hit", Dr. Melvin Mason, school founder and Clerk of our Vestry says, with over a hundred more children signed up this fall over last year's 220.  He says part of the popularity is that the school not only teaches the children but also feeds the children!  We are continuing to raise funds for the Ye Sumo School, and donations can be made for this effort to St. John's Church, P.O. Box 278, Elizabeth, NJ 07207-0278, "Attention: Ye Sumo School".  We welcome and urge your participation in this project!  May God richly bless you!

FLASH: Dr. Mason and his wife and 27 others founded the newest Anglican Church, St. Jude's, in Ye Sumo village on Sunday, March 27!

We are accepting applicants now for new Habitat homes!  For applications, please see the web site noted on the "Contact and Directions" page or go here and enter your Zip Code or go here and print out the application form after reading the pre-application instruction letter at the bottom of the Habitat page (Note: applications are for residents of Union County)!
