Japanese Emperor Akihito steps down. What is his legacy? | DW News
By way of a historic ceremony held in Japan, Emperor Akihito has officially stepped down from the throne. It is the first time in 200 years that a Japanese monarch has abdicated. The emperor began the ritual of abdication at the imperial palace in Tokyo, where he "reported" his abdication to his mythological ancestors. The abdication will be completed in a short and simple ceremony at the emperor's palace. Crowds of people are gathering in front of the palace to witness the event. Akihito's reign ends at midnight, when his son Crown Prince Naruhito will become the new emperor. During his 30-year reign, Akihito attempted to embody the conscience of the Japanese nation. At times, this involved criticizing the government's attempts to justify the country's military history.
