Danse Macabre Camille Saint-Saëns 1980s cartoon, PBS, Halloween, Music
Danse Macabre Camille Saint-Saëns 1980s cartoon, PBS, Halloween, Music
This originally aired on PBS in the 1980s featuring a poorly made up vampire host to introduce and discuss. It was also shown to me when I was in elementary school. One of the best short length Halloween animations ever created. Terrific illustrations. About the song: Danse macabre, by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, was an art song for voice and piano (first performed in 1872) with a French text by the poet Henri Cazalis which is based in an old French superstition. Two years later, the composer expanded and reworked the piece into a tone poem for orchestra, replacing the vocal line with a solo violin. The rest, they say, is history. Camille Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre
Camille Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre
Danse Macabre (first performed in 1875) is the name of opus 40 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based upon a poem by Henri Cazalis, on an old French superstition: Zig, zig, zig, Death in a cadence, Striking with his heel a tomb, Death at midnight plays a dance-tune, Zig, zig, zig, on his violin. The winter wind blows and the night is dark; Moans are heard in the linden trees. Through the gloom, white skeletons pass, Running and leaping in their shrouds. Zig, zig, zig, each one is frisking, The bones of the dancers are heard to crack— But hist! of a sudden they quit the round, They push forward, they fly; the cock has crowed. According to the ancient superstition, "Death" appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death has the power to call forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (represented by a solo violin with its E-string tuned to an E-flat in an example of scordatura tuning). His skeletons dance for him until the first break of dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year. The piece opens with a harp playing a single note, D, twelve times to signify the clock striking midnight, accompanied by soft chords from the string section. This then leads to the eerie E flat and A chords (also known as a tritone or the "Devil's chord") played by a solo violin, representing death on his fiddle. After which the main theme is heard on a solo flute and is followed by a descending scale on the solo ...

Maison garage: old parking as tiny home in Bordeaux, France
Maison garage: old parking as tiny home in Bordeaux, France
Jérémie Buchholtz wanted an affordable apartment in Bordeaux (he's a photographer who splits his time between Paris and Bordeaux so his budget was limited), but he wasn't finding anything he liked. Then he stumbled upon a listing for a garage. There was no house, it was just an abandoned garage for sale. And it looked like one. It had big metal doors that blocked out any sunlight and inside it was being used more as a junk room. So Buchholtz called his friend and architect Matthieu de Marien who specializes in converting stores, offices and other spaces into homes. De Marien took one look at the historic street and recognized it as something special. Passage Buhan is a private passageway where the owners each own half of the road so life extends into the street. And the history here is rich: a couple centuries ago, the laneway housed horses and their riders en route to the then city of Bordeaux and the old stable still sits on the street. Buchholtz bought the property and De Marien quickly cut into the old garage to create more light and ventilation. The roof is historic and couldn't be touched so he carved a 12 square meter (129 square foot) patio out of the small space, leaving only 41 square meters of living space (441 square feet). In order to make the space feel larger, De Marien created a "house within a house": one large piece of furniture that includes the bathroom, bedroom, office, closet, a sofa bed and all of the home's storage. With everything contained in ...

euronews reporter - French elections: what's Y got to do with it?
www.euronews.com They are young, they are French and they are part of what is known as Generation Y. A generation less than 30 years old, they are said to number 13 million in France, or about one fifth of the population. They are also called digital natives - raised on the internet - they are connected, they are informed but they are also feeling increasingly sidelined by an older generation which they say does not help them when it comes to finding work, housing and overall responsibility. Ophelie Latil is 28 years old. She is about to finish a short-term work contract with little prospects of being hired full time. She also belongs to a movement called 'Generation Precaire' meaning "precarious generation". A generation she says is being increasingly sacrificed; paying not only for the economic crisis but for a retiring baby boom generation. "There's a sort of humiliation. The idea that we've studied, we've invested a lot, we've asked others to invest in us both financially and emotionally and we really believed what we were told in school or during our internships," said Ophelie. "They say 'You'll see, you will earn 40000 euros per year. A glorious future awaits you'. And it's only at the end that you realise that you're in debt, that you can't find somewhere to live, you can't find work and the only offers are internships, not even short-term contracts. The problem is that no one tells you that in France less than 10 percent of internships end up with a full work ...

euronews hi-tech - France's tweeting toddlers
www.euronews.com They start them young at a primary school at Siarrouy in the Haute-Pyrénées of south-west France. Since November 2011 they have been learning to write, not with a pen, but with a computer keyboard. Some of them are already tweeting at just five years old. Twitter is playing an increasing role in French classrooms. Teachers are using it more and more with ever younger pupils. It is a simple idea. The teacher writes the message that they want to send on the board - then the children tap it into the computer. The youngsters can not even read and write yet, but their teacher says it is a useful exercise to develop spelling and to form thoughts. Olivier Menadier explained: "When you ask some youngsters, 'what could we write?' they answer, 'My Dad is strong.' That's got nothing to do with what we were talking about. So to get them to take account of what the others are saying about constructing a phrase is also an important goal." The classroom Twitter account is closely controlled. No-one can read the messages without the teacher's say-so. Here, the children do not send messages to their parents like other classes do. Here, they correspond with Canadian classmates in Calgary. One mother, Sophie Herkenrath said: "It's all part of a child's working toolbox now, you can't side-step the internet and all its possibilities, so it's rather good. Afterwards, it's like everything. You have to set a framework and limits and above all explain well the interest in this ...
