In broadcasting, public affairs radio or television programs focus on matters of politics and public policy. Among commercial broadcasters, such programs are often only to satisfy Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulatory expectations and are not scheduled in prime time. Public affairs television programs are usually broadcast at times when few listeners or viewers are tuned in (or even awake) in the U.S., in time slots known as graveyard slots; such programs can be frequently encountered at times such as 5-6 a.m. on a Sunday.
Public affairs coverage is carried as digital subchannels of existing state network Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member public television stations.
Government-access television (GATV) is cable channel capacity for local government bodies and other legislative entities to access the cable television systems to televise public affairs meetings.
At some (particularly national) broadcasters, "Public Affairs" may be a special unit, separate from the news department, dedicated to producing long-form public-affairs programming, as at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation prior to 1992. As of 2012, C-SPAN's three networks are the most widely known and widely available public affairs channels in the United States.

Lobbying
Lobbying (also lobby) is the act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in a government, most often legislators or members of regulatory agencies. Lobbying is done by many types of people, associations and organized groups, including individuals in the private sector, corporations, fellow legislators or government officials, or advocacy groups (interest groups). Lobbyists may be among a legislator's constituencies, meaning a voter or block of voters within his or her electoral district, or not; they may engage in lobbying as a business, or not. Professional lobbyists are people whose business is trying to influence legislation on behalf of a group or individual who hires them. Individuals and nonprofit organizations can also lobby as an act of volunteering or as a small part of their normal job (for instance, a CEO meeting with a representative about a project important to his/her company, or an activist meeting with his/her legislator in an unpaid capacity). Governments often define and regulate organized group lobbying that has become influential.

Public affairs (military)
Public Affairs is a term for the formal offices of the branches of the United States Department of Defense whose purpose is to deal with the media and community issues. The term is also used for numerous media relations offices that are created by the U.S. military for more specific limited purposes. Public affairs offices are staffed by a combination of officers, enlisted personnel, civilian officials and contract professionals.
Public Affairs offices play a key role in contingency and deployed operations.
The typical Public Affairs office is led by an officer who is in charge of planning, budgeting for, executing and evaluating the effectiveness of public affairs programs, and provides public affairs advice, counsel and support for commanders and senior staff members.
Duties and responsibilities
The Public Affairs Officer (PAO) is responsible for developing a working relationship with reporters and other media representatives, maintaining a robust community relations program, keeping contact with other government agencies, and keeping internal and external publics informed on issues that may affect them. Known as "PAO's" for short, they are expected to coordinate with the appropriate agencies prior to contacting and releasing information to the media on conditions that might result in favorable or unfavorable public reaction, including releases and public statements involving local, regional and national news.

A Senator has his staffers draft up a bill that would effectively put you out of business.
When the government threatens your business’s livelihood like this, you hire a lobbyist in DC to do the work for you. And you just turned into a “special interest group” that just hired their first lobbyist.
The main reason why people hire lobbyists is to get the government to stop doing something, or to get the government to do something that would benefit them. Whatever the reason is, this is why the business of legal bribes is so big.
In business, people sell goods and services, in DC, lobbyists sell ideas their clients want them to sell. If you do it right, politicians will never even realize they’re being legally bribed. The last thing you want to do is to scream and yell at these politicians about how “if you don’t support this bill...l!” But at the same time, the conversation is almost never just “give me $100,000 and I’ll vote this way”. No matter who you are, if someone does something for you without asking, you’re gonna be compelled to return the favor in order to maintain your self image as a fair, just person.
In January 2006, Jack Abramoff was sentenced to six years in federal prison for conspiracy to bribe public officials, tax evasion, etc. They were accused of secretly splitting multi-million dollar profits. Abramoff became the poster child for everything that was wrong with big money in politics. If he was the biggest and only villain in DC, when he finally went to prison - why didn’t corruption in DC end?
Everyone cringes at the thought of dirty “special interest” groups and “lobbyists” - but are they the only problem? Are they the only ones in Washington with “special” interests? After all, the only thing that gives these “evil” lobbyists any power is because of the simple fact that the politicians have power to be bought in the first place! The bigger the government gets, the more potential for corruption there will be. If you believe in that, you’re gonna have to accept that big money will always be a part of big politics.
Rockefeller is often remembered as the richest man in history, the king of the greedy capitalist pigs. Yet, since he got his first job as a broke 16 year old, one thing he always made time for, no matter how broke he was, was charitable giving. So before you go complaining about how big corporations rule the world and how unfair life is - the solution might just be right inside your wallet.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. An insightful talk uncovering some of the myths of the world of lobbying. We are challenged to question whether 'perception is reality' and how and what makes governments act. The talk takes us back 400 years to the first formal use of lobbyists, and pushes us to face the complexity of the 'noise' in today's society. In looking at the work of lobbyists to create, and also go beyond, perceptions, what lessons can we take away for our various professions and our lives in using perception as a helpful and constructive tool?
Maria Laptev is a lobbyist, teacher and trainer, and a leader in her field of Public Affairs. She is a recognised expert among professional lobbyists in Brussels and other European capitals. Few people have the depth of experience which Maria has cultivated in her over thirty years working for some of the largest global public affairs agencies on international campaigns with corporations, non governmental organisations and business associations as well as on single issue topics covering many sectors.
She is a professor at United Business Institutes in Brussels where her students commonly remark on her passion, candour and thoughtfulness in her teaching. She has also taught in Vietnam, Croatia and Serbia and various countries in Western Europe.
She is Executive Director to the European Centre for Public Affairs (the ECPA), a Brussels based think tank/platform for Public Affairs affairs excellence and best practice with a focus on training and skills development.

Some people believe lobbying is a perfectly reasonable alternative to corruption, because at least you have a (somewhat) transparent framework when it comes to various entities trying to promote whichever agendas they have in mind.
Other folks, however, believe "lobbying" is a word that needs to be eliminated from the dictionary and that everything about the practice is deeply unethical. Who is right? Or perhaps this is one of those situations where the truth is somewhere in the middle?
Let's find out.
In one minute, lobbying has been explained in a fairly thorough manner. You'll find out what the definition of "lobbying" is (the meaning of the term) and what the concept is all about, through (among other things) carefully-chosen examples.

DeLancey founded Lobbyists 4 Good after watching how Bernie Sanders' 2016 campaign was about to capture mass enthusiasm and raise tons of money through small donors. After a few tweaks to his idea, he settled on this system: People can submit a proposal for an issue. If it raises $5,000 in 100 days through crowdfunding, he'll hire a lobbyist for one month to take the issue to Capitol Hill.

Public affairs (broadcasting)
In broadcasting, public affairs radio or television programs focus on matters of politics and public policy. Among commercial broadcasters, such programs are often only to satisfy Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulatory expectations and are not scheduled in prime time. Public affairs television programs are usually broadcast at times when few listeners or viewers are tuned in (or even awake) in the U.S., in time slots known as graveyard slots; such programs can be frequently encountered at times such as 5-6 a.m. on a Sunday.
Public affairs coverage is carried as digital subchannels of existing state network Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member public television stations.
Government-access television (GATV) is cable channel capacity for local government bodies and other legislative entities to access the cable television systems to televise public affairs meetings.
At some (particularly national) broadcasters, "Public Affairs" may be a special unit, separate from the news department, dedicated to producing long-form public-affairs programming, as at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation prior to 1992. As of 2012, C-SPAN's three networks are the most widely known and widely available public affairs channels in the United States.

Lobbying is a huge industry in the U.S. In 2019, around 12,000 registered professionals helped clients spend over $3.5 billion, which seems to pay off. According to one study, for every dollar spent on lobbying and campaign contributions, a corporation can receive up to $760 from the government. Still, lobbying is often criticized and public perception of the practice is low. Opponents say that the industry isn’t adequately regulated, and that the ability to influence policy is in the favor of those with unlimited financial resources. Supporters say that without their in-depth expertise, lawmakers wouldn’t be able to do their job effectively and efficiently. A Senator has his staffers draft up a bill that would effectively put you out of business.
When the government threatens your business’s livelihood like this, you hire a lobbyist in DC to do the work for you. And you just turned into a “special interest group” that just hired their first lobbyist.
The main reason why people hire lobbyists is to get the government to stop doing something, or to get the government to do something that would benefit them. Whatever the reason is, this is why the business of legal bribes is so big.
In business, people sell goods and services, in DC, lobbyists sell ideas their clients want them to sell. If you do it right, politicians will never even realize they’re being legally bribed. The last thing you want to do is to scream and yell at these politicians about how “if you don’t support this bill...l!” But at the same time, the conversation is almost never just “give me $100,000 and I’ll vote this way”. No matter who you are, if someone does something for you without asking, you’re gonna be compelled to return the favor in order to maintain your self image as a fair, just person.
In January 2006, Jack Abramoff was sentenced to six years in federal prison for conspiracy to bribe public officials, tax evasion, etc. They were accused of secretly splitting multi-million dollar profits. Abramoff became the poster child for everything that was wrong with big money in politics. If he was the biggest and only villain in DC, when he finally went to prison - why didn’t corruption in DC end?
Everyone cringes at the thought of dirty “special interest” groups and “lobbyists” - but are they the only problem? Are they the only ones in Washington with “special” interests? After all, the only thing that gives these “evil” lobbyists any power is because of the simple fact that the politicians have power to be bought in the first place! The bigger the government gets, the more potential for corruption there will be. If you believe in that, you’re gonna have to accept that big money will always be a part of big politics.
Rockefeller is often remembered as the richest man in history, the king of the greedy capitalist pigs. Yet, since he got his first job as a broke 16 year old, one thing he always made time for, no matter how broke he was, was charitable giving. So before you go complaining about how big corporations rule the world and how unfair life is - the solution might just be right inside your wallet.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. An insightful talk uncovering some of the myths of the world of lobbying. We are challenged to question whether 'perception is reality' and how and what makes governments act. The talk takes us back 400 years to the first formal use of lobbyists, and pushes us to face the complexity of the 'noise' in today's society. In looking at the work of lobbyists to create, and also go beyond, perceptions, what lessons can we take away for our various professions and our lives in using perception as a helpful and constructive tool?
Maria Laptev is a lobbyist, teacher and trainer, and a leader in her field of Public Affairs. She is a recognised expert among professional lobbyists in Brussels and other European capitals. Few people have the depth of experience which Maria has cultivated in her over thirty years working for some of the largest global public affairs agencies on international campaigns with corporations, non governmental organisations and business associations as well as on single issue topics covering many sectors.
She is a professor at United Business Institutes in Brussels where her students commonly remark on her passion, candour and thoughtfulness in her teaching. She has also taught in Vietnam, Croatia and Serbia and various countries in Western Europe.
She is Executive Director to the European Centre for Public Affairs (the ECPA), a Brussels based think tank/platform for Public Affairs affairs excellence and best practice with a focus on training and skills development.

Few things are more controversial than lobbying in the world of economics, politics and so on.
Some people believe lobbying is a perfectly reasonable alternative to corruption, because at least you have a (somewhat) transparent framework when it comes to various entities trying to promote whichever agendas they have in mind.
Other folks, however, believe "lobbying" is a word that needs to be eliminated from the dictionary and that everything about the practice is deeply unethical. Who is right? Or perhaps this is one of those situations where the truth is somewhere in the middle?
Let's find out.
In one minute, lobbying has been explained in a fairly thorough manner. You'll find out what the definition of "lobbying" is (the meaning of the term) and what the concept is all about, through (among other things) carefully-chosen examples.
At the end of the day, you could spend ten hours watching an exhaustive lobbying explanation but... frankly, one minute is more than enough for it to become crystal clear what it's all about and what you need to know about the lobby "phenomenon" :)

A lot of Americans feel frustrated that Congress isn't responding to massive problems, like climate change, and they don't know what to do to get their representatives to do something. Some donate to campaigns. Some try big public protests. Some bring their kids to confront a senator about it. Billy DeLancey says he's got a more effective way: Hire a lobbyist.
DeLancey founded Lobbyists 4 Good after watching how Bernie Sanders' 2016 campaign was about to capture mass enthusiasm and raise tons of money through small donors. After a few tweaks to his idea, he settled on this system: People can submit a proposal for an issue. If it raises $5,000 in 100 days through crowdfunding, he'll hire a lobbyist for one month to take the issue to Capitol Hill.
