The Value of the Pike Emerges When Used Correctly
The pike might be one of the simplest weapons ever devised: a long pole with a sharp end. But when used alongside other pikes, its effect can be nothing short of devastating.

With weapons that are much shorter than the pike, running in is an essential part of mixed weapon fencing. Here the carrier of the shorter weapon has no choice but to run in to get past the longer weapon.

Pole weapons have been in use ever since men waged war. Most famously by the Spanish Tercios, the Swiss pikemen and the Landsknechts. Pike and Shot Warfare - The Spanish Tercio | Early-Modern Warfare
Pike and shot warfare emerged in response to forces dominating the battlefields such as the Swiss mercenary and the gendarmes, the French heavy cavalry. These powerhouses dominated their respective troop types throughout the late Middle Ages. During the Pike and Shot age, the first to successfully stand firm against these forces combined were the Spanish. But they had to learn it the hard way during the Italian wars at the battle of Seminara in 1495. But, later, in the battle of Cerignola they actually managed to defeat the French and Swiss Pike men because of their Pike and Shot tactics. The battle of Cerignola is considered the first battle in Europe won by gunpowder warfare. After that they created the Tercio. The Tercio was a Spanish formation, which dominated the European battlefields...

Learn the Art of Combat - Pike techniques #2: Thrusting basics
In this video we want to compare the different thrusts of the Landsknecht pike. These range from really simple to more difficult to extremely unusual techniques. Particularly in terms of target accuracy, there are significant differences in some cases. Therefore, some thrusting technique requires a lot of practice. But is it worth the effort? Why make it difficult if it can’t be simpler and more precise? To answer this question, let’s take a closer look at all the thrusts to draw a conclusion at the end of the video.

Frequently asked questions:
Pikes only works in formation. Why you show us a Duelsituation?
This has didactic reasons why techniques are also presented in isolation in the old fencing books. Martial arts concepts are difficult to understand if you let all influences and individualities flow in. Especially that of a field battle. But by the way, pikes in duels were definitely weapons for tournaments and fencing schools.
What kind of pike is that?
The Pike is a three-part simulator from https://jesterofblades.de/
The prototype of this pike has become a bit too wobbly. However, a certain degree of flexibility is important for safe sparring. We'll see how the final product will be. But it can be a little stiffer.
Is a pike so wobbly?
The pike is a little more wobbly than usual with the original. It is a sparring version for safe practice. The material is ash.

But, later, in the battle of Cerignola they actually managed to defeat the French and Swiss Pike men because of their Pike and Shot tactics. The battle of Cerignola is considered the first battle in Europe won by gunpowder warfare. After that they created the Tercio. The Tercio was a Spanish formation, which dominated the European battlefields up to the Thirty Years' War. Only at the Battle of Nieuwpoort (1600) or at the battle of Rocroi 1643 did the tercios show weaknesses.
