Quicksand: Mickey Rooney, Peter Lorre, Jeanne Cagney, Barbara Bates (1950 Movie)
thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com Quicksand (1950) is a United Artists film noir starring Mickey Rooney and Peter Lorre in a story about a garage mechanic's descent into crime. The film has been described as "film noir in a teacup... a pretty nifty little picture" in which Rooney "cast himself against his Andy Hardy goody goody image." Young auto mechanic Dan Brady (Mickey Rooney) takes $20 from a cash register at work to go on a date with blonde femme fatale Vera Novak (Jeanne Cagney). Brady intends to put the money back before it is missed, but the garage's bookkeeper shows up earlier than scheduled. As Brady scrambles to cover evidence of his petty theft, he fast finds himself drawn into an ever worsening "quicksand" of crime, each of his misdeeds more serious than the last. His descent is sped along by his heartless and morally lacking boss Oren Mackay (Art Smith), and the seedy owner of a pinball arcade on Santa Monica Pier, Nick Dramoshag (Peter Lorre). Brady and Vera split when Vera purchases a mink coat with money Brady has stolen. Brady's still-loyal but unappreciated former girlfriend Helen (Barbara Bates) then reenters the scene and tries to woo him back. Later fleeing what he believes will be a murder charge, Brady carjacks a sedan which happens to be driven by a sympathetic lawyer (Taylor Holmes). By movie's end Brady is back with his faithful girlfriend, who promises to wait for him while he spends the next few years of his life in prison. Cast includes ...

JUDY GARLAND: 'YANKEE DOODLE BOY' WITH MICKEY ROONEY FROM 'BABES ON BROADWAY'.
JUDY GARLAND: 'YANKEE DOODLE BOY' WITH MICKEY ROONEY FROM 'BABES ON BROADWAY'.
Performed by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney in the Ghost Theater Sequence of the film Babes on Broadway, 1941. Judy turned 19 as she began work on this film, which followed close on the heels of Life Begins for Andy Hardy.Judy had two hit songs from this film. "How About You," performed with Mickey Rooney, was nominated for the Best Song Academy Award for 1942. "FDR Jones," performed solo, was also a hit. She recorded both songs for Decca, and performed them numerous times on radio. This film has some interesting history: It was Vincente Minnelli who scripted the "Ghost Theater" segment in which Mickey and Judy offer impressions of legendary stage favorites. Veteran vaudevillian Elsie Janis was employed to coach Mickey and Judy in the sequence. She was especially appreciative of Judy and later wrote, "She can be anything she wants to be, and it will be very interesting to watch her heart and head battle it out. The former is enormous - the latter is surprisingly small, considering the crowns and laurels it has to hold up. Judy has gone farther, faster than anyone I know - and she has not yet started." This film features the screen debut of Margaret O'Brien. Also, Donna Reed made her screen debut as Jonesy's secretary. Words and music by George M. Cohan. Baby Face Nelson (1957) Mickey Rooney
Baby Face Nelson (1957) Mickey Rooney
Violent sequence from rarely seen "Baby Face Nelson" -- Fittingly directed by Illinois native and bad-guy filmmaker Don Siegel, this action-packed film stars Mickey Rooney as the unflinching, trigger-happy member of the infamous Dillinger gang that besieged the Midwest circa 1933. Rooney is Lester "Baby Face Nelson" Gillis and Carolyn Jones his gun moll, Sue, in this fictionalized tale of a scrawny street tough turned psychotic gangster. After being released from prison, Nelson goes to work for mob boss Rocca (Ted De Corsia), who eventually recognizes that a madman is in his service and turns him in to the cops. Managing to elude capture, Nelson kills Rocca and takes Sue with him. He then joins Dillinger's gang in a series of savage robberies, obliterating anyone who gets in his way. Inevitably, FBI agents ambush and injure Nelson, who finally admits his own ruthlessness to himself and Sue, conceding that he would even murder children if necessary. He orders Sue to kill him before he commits any more savage acts. This is a coarse and deliberately aggressive film, distinguished by Rooney's frenzied performance as an unruly and deranged criminal. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide
