SUKKOT is also known as: The Feast of Ingathering The Festival of the Seventh Month Season of Our Rejoicing The Feast of Booths The Feast of Tabernacles Why do we call it Sukkot and what is a Sukkah? Sukkot (pronounced "sue-coat") is a Hebrew word that means (plural) "booths" and refers to the temporary dwelling the Hebrew people lived in on their forty year journey from Egypt to the promised land. Sukkah is the Hebrew word for: hut, temporary dwelling, tent, booth. Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths. Leviticus 23:41 That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 23:43 When to Celebrate? Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, the fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD. Leviticus 23:34 Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a Sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a Sabbath. Leviticus 23:39 But Why Should We Celebrate it? And thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite, the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy gates. Deuteronomy 16:13 Even if we're not native-born Israelis, or even Jewish, scripture says that even "the stranger within the gates" is to observe the Feast. Be Joyful! Celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. Be joyful at your Feast—you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the Levites, the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. For seven days celebrate the Feast to Yahweh your Elohim at the place Yahweh will choose. For Yahweh your Elohim will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete. Three times a year all your men must appear before Yahweh your Elohim at the place he will choose: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Tabernacles. No man should appear before Yahweh empty-handed: Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way Yahweh your Elohim has blessed you. Deuteronomy 16:13-16 Sukkot is a seven-day festival. The first day of Sukkot is the 15th of Tishrei, occurring in September or October of the year. Sukkot is one of the three pilgrimage festivals. We are commanded to have joy! (We are very Legalistic about this one!) RESTORATION - Then & Now Nehemiah 8 14 And they (Ezra & the scribes) found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the Feast of the seventh month: 15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. 16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim. During a time when the Lord is restoring so much that has been lost to the church, isn't it interesting to see that during the time of Ezra the Lord was "restoring" to them, too. When Ezra "found" written in the law that they were to dwell in booths during Sukkot, the people did so. Yeshua and Sukkot John 7:2 Now the LORD's Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 11 Then the Jews sought him (Yeshua) at the feast, and said, Where is he? 14 Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Yeshua stood and cried saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. Yeshua, himself, observed Sukkot just like he would have done with all the other festivals. During the Millenium Reign of Messiah Yeshua Zechariah 14 16 And it shall come to pass that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. 17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. Sukkot will be observed during Messiah's 1000-year reign on Earth. This scripture puts to rest the suggestion that some have that the festivals are a thing of the "past". They should also be a thing of our "present", just like they will be in our "future".
