Hong Kong Philharmonic performs Mahler's Symphony No. 5 under Maestro Osmo Vanska.
First performed as a cycle of four operas in 1876, Wagner’s visionary Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) is one of the greatest works of art. Centred around a ring which offers its bearer ultimate power and the attempts of various people to acquire it, the Ring cycle explores the relationship between love and earthly power and the themes of yearning and loss, all within a setting of medieval legend. The Prologue Das Rheingold depicts the theft and subsequent surrender of the ring forged from the Rhinemaidens’ gold by the Nibelung dwarf Alberich.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

On 13th March, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra announced that Music Director Jaap van Zweden's contract with the orchestra is going to be extended. The new contract will last through to the end of the 2018/19 season. The orchestra also has something else to celebrate. This year marks its fortieth anniversary. Ben Pelletier went to speak to Jaap van Zweden at the beginning of the current season, as he was preparing to conduct Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Maps can be both science and art. Of course, they have to be accurate, to show people how to get where they want to go. But historical maps in particular are also artistic renderings of reality. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra has a new Music Director, Jaap van Zweden. Jaap was born in Amsterdam, and in little more than a decade from first taking up the baton he became one of the world's most in-demand conductors. At 19 he became the youngest principal violinist or concertmaster ever of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. While he was there, Leonard Bernstein urged him to try conducting. He began his conducting career only in 1995, but last November he received the Conductor of the Year Award 2012. Jaap is joining the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra on a four year initial contract. An exhibition at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum shows us one of the great historical maps, in the exhibition "Mapping Ming China's Maritime World -- The Selden Map and Other Treasures from the University of Oxford", which was recently opened by former governor Chris Patten.
As the weather of the past few days has reminded us, living in the city isn't always an infallible defence against the worst the weather has to offer. But although the weekend's hail storms caused plenty of damage, that's not a lot compared with what Hong Kong has experienced in the past at the hands of typhoons As an exhibition at the the Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage reminds us, the first storm photographed in 1874 not only dealt a heavy blow to Hong Kong's economy, it killed more than 2,000 people. And there have been worse. A 1937 typhoon killed 11,000.
Last week, O-Kai, a young a cappella group from Taiwan, sang a traditional Taiwanese folk song in our studio. This week' we're heading to the other side of the world, and to Oxford University, for more a cappella singing. And the music couldn't be more different. The Oxford Gargoyles were visiting Hong Kong last week, and while they were here they came to the studio to talk to Ben Tse, and to bring us their take on a couple of jazz tunes.

Some are copies done especially for tourists. But last month the creator of these apparently happy images, Yue Minjun, visited Hong Kong for an exhibition of new works. His paintings and sculptures have been associated with the Cynical Realism art movement in contemporary Chinese art, and are -- of course --deeply ironic.
"Burn the Floor" is now in its 14th year of touring the world. It has thrilled millions of people in more than thirty countries, and this week it's opening in Hong Kong. It's an energetic Latin and Ballroom dance spectacular that takes you on a journey through the passionate drama of dance, from the elegance of the Viennese Waltz to the exuberance of the Jive and the intensity of the Paso Doble. Today, the full cast of the production is in our studio to tell us about the show, and to perform.
