Against All Odds - the success of Pastoralism
Against All Odds - the success of Pastoralism
Millions of people across the drylands of the Horn of Africa survive through pastoralism. It's an extraordinary way of making a living from an environment that looks impossible to survive in. Pastoralists are productive and resilient - running a multi-million dollar industry without any real support - yet decades of neglect by their governments has left communities highly vulnerable to drought and destitution.

Pastoralist Voices on Climate Change
Pastoralist Voices on Climate Change
Pastoralist Voices on Climate Change is being produced in conjunction with the Livestock-Climate Change CRSP Pastoral Transformations to Resilient Futures: Understanding Climate from the Ground Up (PTRF) project led by Dr. Kathleen Galvin and Robin Reid, from Colorado State University. This film was produced and directed by Joana Roque Depinho with support from the Livestock-Climate Change CRSP and the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). The film team also includes Lindsay Simpson and Nicholas Tapia. The full-length documentary (to be released in Spring 2012) will illustrate the collaborative and participatory process between scientists and pastoralists in Kenya, documenting two collaborative workshops whereby local land users directly inform the scientific process and climate change science, which, in turn, feeds back to local decision-making.

Using participatory video with pastoralists in Ethiopia
Using participatory video with pastoralists in Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, 19 October 2010. Beth Cullen shares her experience of using participatory video with pastoralists in Ethiopia. In her views, videos are a great way to record, capture and share indigenous knowledge, and make it travel in the community, across communities and to other actors and stakeholders such as NGOs and policy makers. However, even if it's a very effective knowledge sharing tool, video sharing has its challenges; in particular, there's the risk that the tool gets hijacked from the ones in power so the all process needs great attention and facilitation See more at www.sharefair.net Video by Pier Andrea Pirani - Euforic Services.

Enhancing adaptation to climate change among pastoralists in northern Kenya
Enhancing adaptation to climate change among pastoralists in northern Kenya
This project seeks to shed light on pastoralists' vulnerability and coping strategies with respect to climate change in Turkana and Mandera districts, Northern Kenya. About 13% of Kenya's 30 million people are pastoralists, herding their livestock in the arid and semi-arid lands that constitute about 75% of the country's land mass. These areas are prone to rainfall variability and extreme drought. This project seeks to shed light on pastoralists' vulnerability and coping strategies with respect to climate change in Turkana and Mandera districts, Northern Kenya. Researchers will examine indigenous technologies, best practices and existing institutional arrangements for adapting to climate change. Policies to date have tried to restrict herd movement and settle pastoralists, but with limited access to critical resources. In a changing climate with increased drought, herd movement will become even more important as an adaptation strategy. The project will seek practices that improve herd movement, such as livestock corridors, while securing pastoralists' right to water and forage. www.africa-adapt.net www.nema.go.ke www.itdg.org www.idrc.ca
