Pakistani Prisoners escape after militants attack Pakistani jail, Almost 400 prisoners escaped from a Pakistani prison after it was attacked by militants, officials have said. Dozens of Islamist militants armed with guns and rocket-propelled grenades launched the assault on the jail in north-west Pakistan at around 01:00 local time (20:00 GMT on Saturday). Officials said some of the freed inmates were themselves militants. The jail is located in Bannu, a town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Pakistan's volatile tribal areas. Pakistan's Taliban said they carried out the attack, but the claim has not been verified. "We have freed hundreds of our comrades in Bannu in this attack. Several of our people have reached their destinations, others are on their way," a Taliban spokesman told the news agency.

Friday, April 13, 2012 11:21 +0900 (JST) North Korea has launched what it called a satellite-carrying rocket but the projectile disintegrated soon after the launch. Japan's Defense Ministry says debris fell into the Yellow Sea, without affecting Japanese territory. The ministry says a US early warning satellite system confirmed the launch at about 7:40 AM, Japan Time. The projectile was launched from the western coast of North Korea toward the south and flew for more than one minute. A Defense Ministry official says the projectile reached an altitude of about 120 kilometers before it disintegrated into around 10 pieces. They are thought to have fallen into the Yellow Sea west of the Korean Peninsula. The official says none of the pieces reached Japanese territory. The National Police Agency and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency say there are no reports of damage. The Defense Ministry is closely analyzing the trajectory using data provided by the US military and obtained by Aegis destroyers from Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force. Two Aegis destroyers have been positioned in the East China Sea around Okinawa, and another in the Sea of Japan. Cedits: NHK World English W1TV 10 MINUTES www.w1tv.com.br

Iran has rolled out the red carpet for visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, talking down recent tensions in bilateral relations. The nuclear issue has not posed a problem, with Ankara voicing support for what Tehran says is a civilian project. The US and its allies suspect the Islamic Republic is trying to develop atomic bombs. "We always thank Turkey for its stance in defending Iran's peaceful nuclear programme," said Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, who helped welcome the Turkish premier. Ankara has offered to host the next round of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers. Syria though has strained ties. Turkey wants President Bashar al-Assad to step down while Tehran continues to support its closest Arab ally. Iran now, however, says it backs Kofi Annan's UN-sponsored peace plan. Our correspondent in Tehran, Bora Bayraktar, explains that Turkey wants a quick end to the Assad regime while Iran wants to protect its regional ally. "Prime Minister Erdogan is here to find a solution to these two incompatible positions," he said.

A ceasefire has been in place in Syria for several hours already, with no reports of major violence received so far. But mutual distrust and the rebels' refusal to guarantee the end of hostilities, means there's no concrete guarantee either side will avoid firing the first shot. In harmony with the rebirth of nature, the Persian New Year Celebration, or Norooz, always begins on the first day of spring. Norooz ceremonies with thousands of years history are symbolic representations of two ancient concepts - the End and the Rebirth; or Good and Evil. with various local pronunciations and spellings, meaning 'New Day') is the traditional Iranian new year holiday celebrated by Iranian people and initiated in Ancient Iran. Apart from Iran, the celebration has spread in many other parts of the world (specially the parts which belonged to the Greater Iran) including parts of West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Northwestern China, the Caucasus, between kurdish population of Turkey, the Crimea, Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo and the Republic of Macedonia. Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Iranian year. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox (the start of spring in the northern hemisphere), which usually occurs on March 21 or the previous/following day depending on where it is observed. The term Nowruz first appeared in Persian records in the second century AD, but it was also an important day during the time of the Achaemenids (c. 648-330 BC), where kings from different nations under the Persian empire used to bring gifts to the emperor (Shahanshah) of Persia on Nowruz.
