De La Salle North Earns Corporate Philanthropy Award
De La Salle North Earns Corporate Philanthropy Award
delasallenorth.org/ De La Salle North Catholic High School, a member of the Cristo Rey Network of college-preparatory high schools serving students of low-income families, has a corporate internship program for which the school recently earned an Innovative Partnership Award from the Portland Business Journal. The jobs that our corporate partners have provided to students have been invaluable to our students and to the growth of our unique college-preparatory school. Our students benefit directly from the financial support that their work at corporate internship program partners provides to keep the school operating, but the students—and the greater Portland community—benefit in so many other ways, too. Students acquire valuable job experience that will serve them well in future careers, learning responsibility, accountability and dedication. The ethical elements of the school inspire students to serve their greater community. On a broader level, De La Salle North's remarkable success rates helping students earn admission to post-secondary education (more than 95%) provide a profound and lasting economic benefit for our larger economy. Take a look and learn more about how this program works for the benefit of at-risk students, our corporate partners and the greater Portland community.

Psychology and Emotion in Education: Snap Out of It! Emotional Balance (1951)
Psychology and Emotion in Education: Snap Out of It! Emotional Balance (1951)
DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org According to the Portland Business Journal, people skills are often described as: * understanding ourselves and moderating our responses * talking effectively and empathizing accurately * building relationships of trust, respect and productive interactions. A British definition is "the ability to communicate effectively with people in a friendly way, especially in business." The term is not listed yet in major US dictionaries. The term people skills is used to include both psychological skills and social skills, but is less inclusive than life skills. Human relations studies became a movement in the 1920s, as companies became more interested in the "soft skills" and interpersonal skills of employees. In organizations, improving people skills became a specialized role of the corporate trainer. By the mid-1930s, Dale Carnegie popularized people skills in How to Win Friends & Influence People and How to Stop Worrying & Start Living throughout America and later throughout the world. In the 1960s, US schools introduced people skills topics and methods—often as a way to promote better self-esteem, communication and social interaction. These encompassed psychologist Thomas Gordon's "Effectiveness Training" variations as well as many other training programs. Tribal Attorneys Manipulate Gorge Casino Process
Tribal Attorneys Manipulate Gorge Casino Process
The Warm Springs Tribes, through their attorneys, have unduly influenced the Bureau of Indian Affairs' process for reviewing a proposed casino in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. Tribal attorneys were allowed to view and edit NEPA documents before the rest of the public even saw the documents. As a result, the official agency documents are heavily skewed in favor of building a casino in the Gorge. This is an interview with Andy Giegerich, a reporter at the Portland Business Journal who first broke the story. The interview aired on KGW 8 at 8:15 am on July 26, 2008.

WindPower Portland
WindPower Portland
Southwest Windpower turbines into place on top of a new building, Twelve West. Located at Southwest 12th Avenue and Washington Street, Twelve West includes a mixture of office and apartment spaces and was designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects to achieve LEED Platinum certification. ZGF included the turbines in early renderings, and developer Gerding Edlen, probably the foremost green developer on the West Coast, determined to give the turbines serious chance. The turbines appear to be the first to be applied to a building in Portland. According to the Portland Business Journal, Gerding Edlen, ZGF, and Energy Trust of Oregon all chipped in to pay for the small wind turbines, and only time will tell if the investment pays off.
