Darius Campbell (born Darius Campbell-Danesh, 19 August 1980) is a Scottish platinum-selling singer-songwriter, a West End stage actor, operatic baritone, Sunday Times best-selling author, and an Ambassador for The Prince's Trust, who is also known as Darius Danesh, or simply Darius.

He established himself as a popular West End leading man: first by becoming the youngest actor to play the role of Billy Flynn in the West End or Broadway, in the musical ''Chicago'', appearing in two successful runs; then starring in the Olivier Award winning ''Guys and Dolls'' as the lead Sky Masterson; and then originating the role of Rhett Butler in Sir Trevor Nunn’s theatrical adaptation of ''Gone with the Wind''.

In 2010 he trained with tenor Rolando Villazon, winning the hit ITV1 competition ''Popstar to Operastar'', and dueting with Rolando on "The Impossible Dream". Earlier in the year, he changed his last name from Danesh, to Campbell, his mother's maiden name. He appeared in his debut Opera ''Carmen'' with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, in the biggest Operatic production ever in the UK, at ''The O₂'' arena. At 29, he became the youngest performer to take on the lead role of the Torreador "Escamillio", Carmen's bullfighting lover, which in the world of Opera is usually given to baritones in their early forties.

He starred in ''The History of the Big Bands'' tour during 2010, a show which takes the audience on a musical journey through the times of the Big Band and Swing Era.

Early life

Campbell was born in Glasgow, to father Dr. Booth Danesh, who is Iranian and mother, Dr Avril Campbell, who is Scottish. He has two younger brothers, Cyrus and Aria. Educated at the Glasgow Academy, he went on to study English Literature and Philosophy at Edinburgh University.

His professional career began acting as a ten-year-old Trojan boy in a non-singing role of the Scottish Opera's avant garde 1990s production of ''The Trojans''. As a teenager he then performed at Covent Garden Royal Opera House with the Scottish Opera in a critically acclaimed production of ''Carmen''.

Career

2001-02: ''Pop Idol'' and ''Popstars''

He first gained fame in 2001 while studying English Literature at Edinburgh University, after appearing on the British talent competition ''Popstars''- a year later millions voted him to the finals of the hit TV talent show ''Pop Idol''. He turned down Simon Cowell's million-pound record deal and went on to sign with grammy-winning U2 producer Steve Lillywhite. His first, self-penned single "Colourblind" entered the UK singles chart at number 1, his debut album went platinum in 2004 and he has subsequently had five UK Top Ten singles and a second gold album. He supported Shakira on her world tour, headlined in India with Alanis Morissette. His book "Sink or Swim", about the perils of the music business, was a no. 6 Sunday Times best-seller.

While studying English Literature and Philosophy at Edinburgh University, he auditioned for the talent competition ''Popstars'', reaching the final stages. He gained the support of the British public and millions voted for him on ''Pop Idol'' in 2001, finishing in third place. After the series final, he turned down Simon Cowell's offer to sing cover songs, and instead sent a self-composed track to producer Steve Lillywhite who signed him to a five-album deal. Darius Danesh's ''Dive In Tour'' took place in April and May 2003. Originally fifteen dates in May, the tour was expanded to include twenty three dates due to public demand.

2002-04: ''Dive In'' and ''Dive In Tour''

In 2002 ''Colourblind'' became Darius' first number one single and his self-penned album ''Dive In'' went platinum. He wrote all 12 songs on the album and produced one of the tracks called ''Better Than That'' whilst collaborating with a number of other producers such as The Misfits and The Matrix on the other tracks. Steve Lillywhite was executive producer on the album. Campbell, then performing as Darius Danesh, went on to support Shakira in Paris on her World Tour and completed his own sell-out UK Dive In Tour. The first single ''Colourblind'', was released on July 29, 2002 and went straight to number 1 in the UK for two weeks and was certified Silver. The second single ''Rushes'', also did well, going to number 5 in the UK charts, and the third single ''Incredible (What I Meant to Say)'' went to number 9. The fourth and last single ''Girl in the Moon'' didn't do as well but still got to number 21. The album actually has 69 tracks, but after the first 12 they are all 5 seconds of silence until the last one, which is a songwriting demo of ''Gotta Know Tonight'', effectively making it a hidden track. The last song on the album, ''Secret Song'', is a hidden track as it is included at the end of the song ''Devil in You'' after a 3 minute silence between the songs. ''Secret Song'' was written and produced by Darius.

He also wrote a no. 6 Sunday Times Best Seller book, "Sink or Swim". After receiving news that his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he wrote and dedicated his second studio album ''Live Twice'' to Dr Booth Danesh. In 2005, the album's title-track "Live Twice" became his fifth Top Ten single.

2005-08: ''Chicago'' and ''Guys and Dolls''

Campbell had two West End runs in ''Chicago'' during 2005-2006, and at 25, officially became the youngest actor to fill the role of Billy Flynn since the show first opened on Broadway in 1975.

In 2007, after seeing Ewan McGregor in the role, he landed the lead in Michael Grandage's Olivier Award winning production of ''Guys and Dolls'', starring as Sky Masterson. Later that year he reprised his role of Billy Flynn for the 10th Anniversary charity performance of ''Chicago'' in London, to benefit the charities Breast Cancer Haven and Breast Health Institute.

In 2008 he returned to London's West End to originate the role of Rhett Butler in Sir Trevor Nunn's musical adaptation of ''Gone With The Wind''. It officially opened at the New London Theatre on 22 April 2008, the production closing on 14 June 2008, after 79 performances (including previews).

2010-present: ''Popstar to Operastar''

In 2010 he starred in ''The History of the Big Bands'' tour – a show which takes the audience on a musical journey through the times of the Big Band and Swing Era. Featuring the songs of Frank Sinatra and the music of the key musicians of the big band era, including music from Harry James, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Woody Herman and Buddy Rich. In January and February 2010 Campbell competed in and won the UK's ITV1 talent show ''Popstar to Operastar'', in which eight pop stars were trained to perform world-famous opera arias. He was mentored by world-leading tenor Rolando Villazon, with whom he went on to duet with on the song "The Impossible Dream", to popular acclaim. In May 2010 he appeared as toreador Escamillo in Bizet's opera ''Carmen'' at The O2 arena in London.

He rounded off 2010 with a starring role in pantomime, playing the Prince Lorenzo in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at the King's Theatre, Glasgow.

In 2003 Campbell appeared as himself in episode of the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, performing 'Girl in the Moon' at a graduation ball. In 2009 he guest-starred on the BBC show ''Hotel Babylon'', starring as Gennaro Fazio, an Italian magazine editor.

Name change

In January 2010 it was announced that he would be using the name "Darius Campbell" out of respect for his Scottish roots, because "Darius" as he was previously known as a recording artist was too short, and his birth name "Darius Campbell-Danesh" was too long.

Relationships

Campbell is married to Canadian actress Natasha Henstridge of ''Species'' fame. Newspaper reports said they had broken off their engagement in early 2010, but they resumed their relationship later that year and Campbell and Natasha Henstridge married in a secret ceremony in February 2011; the ceremony was arranged in 7 days.

Darius Aaron Morris (born January 3, 1991) is an American professional basketball point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. Morris was selected as the 41st pick to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2011 NBA Draft.

Morris had completed his sophomore season with the Michigan Wolverines basketball team for the 2010–11 team. He was the 2010–11 Big Ten assists leader and is Michigan Wolverines all-time single-season assist record-holder. He earned third team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore.

Morris led Windward School to the 2009 state championship while earning the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section John Wooden High School Player of the Year Award. He was a 2010–11 All-Big Ten 3rd team selection by the coaches and the media. The National Association of Basketball Coaches named him as a 2nd team All-District selection for the district composed of Big Ten schools.

High School

In high school, Morris, the son of Dewayne Sr. and Robin Morris, attended Windward School. Morris was invited to numerous All-star basketball camps hosted by LeBron James, Steve Nash, the National Basketball Players Association and Nike. He was twice selected as a first-team All-State player in California. He was also named the MVP of numerous tournaments and invited to participate in numerous All-star games, including the Academic All-American Classic. Morris led Windward High School to the California Division V state title, posting a game-high 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the championship game. Darius Morris was named the MVP of Olympic League, CIF Division 5A Southern Section Player of Year, and CIF Division 5A State Player of Year. Also Darius was awarded a John Wooden High School Player of the Year Award, received by Jrue Holiday the year before. He was ranked as the 11th, 15th and 20th best high school basketball point guard in the nation by ESPN, Rivals.com and Scout.com, respectively. Rivals and ESPN included him on their lists of best overall basketball players at 77th and 100th, respectively.

College

As a freshman with the 2009–10 team, Morris averaged 4.4 points and 2.6 assist per game on 24.3 minutes of playing time per game. Three times he scored in double digits, including his first career game. He had a season-high 7 assists against Northwestern on January 10, 2010.

On December 23, 2010, Morris was one of three Wolverines to make 4 three point shots as the team set a school single-game record by making 16 against . He also had 12 assists on his way to a double-double. On December 27, 2010, the Big Ten Conference named Morris player of the week. Ann Arbor media felt his omission from the 67-man 2011 Bob Cousy Award watchlist was a surpise. Morris repeated as (co-)player of the week on January 31, 2011 sharing the award with Talor Battle, after becoming the third Michigan Wolverines men's basketball player (following Gary Grant and Manny Harris) to record a triple double. On February 1, 2011, ''The Wall Street Journal'' calculated that Morris was by far the most valuable player to his team among major conference players because his combined assists and field goals account for over 53% of his team's points.

Morris established a new Michigan single-season assists record during the 2011 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament (235 in 35 games). The previous highest single-season assists totals in Michigan history were by Gary Grant (234 in 34 games, 1987–88) and Rumeal Robinson (233 in 37 games, 1988–89). His average of 6.71 assists per game led the Big Ten Conference. For the season, Morris also led the 2010–11 team in points per game and steals per game.

Following the 2010–11 Big Ten Conference men's basketball season, Darius Morris was selected as a third team All-Big Ten selection by both the conference's coaches and the conference's media. Morris was also a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I District 7 All‐District second team choice. Since the Big Ten Conference is its own district, this is equivalent to being named second team All-Big Ten by the NABC.

Following the season, Morris sought the advice of the NBA's undergraduate advisory committee to determine his draft prospects. On May 4, Morris announced his final decision not to withdraw his name prior to the May 8 deadline and to enter the June 23, 2011 NBA Draft.

Pro career

ESPN's Chad Ford described Morris at a legit as the biggest true point guard in the draft. Morris was selected by his hometown Los Angeles Lakers with the 41st overall selection in the 2nd round of the 2011 NBA Draft.

Jeff Lorber (born November 4, 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American Grammy Award-nominated keyboardist, composer, and record producer.

After leading his own group, The Jeff Lorber Fusion, he went on to pioneer the smooth jazz genre.

Many of his songs were featured on The Weather Channel's ''Local On The 8s'' segments, including appearances on the channel's compilation albums, ''The Weather Channel Presents: The Best of Smooth Jazz'' and ''The Weather Channel Presents: Smooth Jazz II''.

In February, it was announced Jeff Lorber signed with Peak Records. Lorber's first CD for his new label is expected to hit the street on Tuesday, June 10.

He was also nominated for a Grammy for his 2007 Blue Note Records release titled, "He Had A Hat."

Early life

Jeff Lorber was born to a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lorber started to play the piano when he was four years old and after playing in a number of R&B; bands as a teen, went on to attend Berklee College of Music, where he developed his love for jazz. He moved to Vancouver, Washington in 1972.

The Jeff Lorber Fusion (1977-1981)

His first group, The Jeff Lorber Fusion, released their self-titled debut album in 1977 on Inner City Records. Supported by a revolving cast of musicians including longtime drummer Dennis Bradford, Lorber recorded five studio albums under this moniker. These early releases showcased a funky sound influenced by other jazz fusion practitioners like Herbie Hancock, Weather Report and Return to Forever, the latter's Chick Corea appearing on several noteworthy Fusion cuts. Like his contemporaries, Lorber performed on multiple keyboard instruments including piano, Rhodes piano, and various analog synthesizers, often favoring the Minimoog and Sequential Circuits Prophet 5.

"Rain Dance," found on the 1979 album ''Water Sign'', was sampled for the 1996 Lil' Kim single "Crush On You." It was also sampled for the track ''Love Like This (featuring Lil' Cease)'' on Release SWV's 1997 release Release Some Tension

The Jeff Lorber Fusion's 1980 LP ''Wizard Island'' introduced a young saxophonist named Kenny Gorelick, better known as Kenny G.

Solo career (1982-present)

In 1982, Lorber recorded his first solo album ''It's A Fact'', which explored Lorber's R&B; roots with a smoother, more synth-heavy sound. The album featured a new backing band as well as contributions from former Fusion bandmate Kenny G and legendary percussionist Paulinho Da Costa. ''It's A Fact'' also contained several songs with vocalists, a stark contrast to the instrumental recordings of the Fusion.

1984 was a prolific year for Lorber, who followed up his solo debut with ''In the Heat of the Night'' and ''Lift Off''. Later that same year, Lorber teamed up with influential R&B; production duo David Frank and Mic Murphy, otherwise known as The System[], to produce his most successful effort to date, ''Step By Step''[]. The synth-driven title track rose to number 31 on the R&B; charts[].

Jeff Lorber's keyboard work is featured in the PlayStation video game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. His keyboarding can be heard during the game's closing theme song "I Am the Wind" (which also features saxophonist Gerald Albright).

His subsequent albums continued to evolve in a smooth jazz direction. Two greatest hits compilations, ''The Definitive Collection'' and ''The Very Best of Jeff Lorber'', were released in 2000 and 2002 respectively. To date, he has recorded a dozen solo albums, his most recent being 2005's ''Flipside'' which was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Pop Instrumental Album category.

Lorber has done extensive production and session work for other artists including Dave Koz, Eric Benet, Herb Alpert and Laura Branigan, as well as working on a track for the critically acclaimed 1997 PlayStation game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. In addition to his recording and performing, Lorber also hosts his own show on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Personal life

Jeff Lorber is married to Mingquan Tungwarapotwitan. When Lorber was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, he received a successful kidney transplant from his wife. Jeff has two daughters, Nica Lorber and Jessica Lorber.
