As part of Deakin's Creative Arts International Study tours, sixteen students and three academics visited Japan for two weeks in 2011. Exploring the arts and culture of such a visually powerful country inspired this collection of work with participants reflecting on their personal experience.

The Political Imagination: Contemporary Postcolonial and Diasporic Poetries. 'The Political Imagination' is a symposium that brings together some of Australia's leading poets and poetry scholars to investigate the state of contemporary postcolonial and diasporic poetries. It aims to explore the contentious, at times controversial, issues surrounding the production and discussion of poetry and poetics in work that engages with the politics of the postcolonial, the transnational and the diasporic.

A two-day conference exploring the opportunities and challenges for a Papua New Guinea seeking security and prosperity. The conference is hosted by the Alfred Deakin Research Institute in partnership with the Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Richard Marles MP, and is supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and AusAID.

This exhibition - drawn from the Deakin University Art Collection and featuring many recent acquisitions - examines symbols, contexts and narratives that have become part of the identity vernacular with artworks that challenge simple and self-congratulatory identities; sometimes contentious and challenging, sometimes playful and irreverent, but always revealing.
