Grace Adler Tribute
Finished just last night. Song was chosen entirely at random, it was just the first one to pop into my head when I was wondering "which song has about a 20 second intro that I can play audio-ed clips during". Then everything just worked out when I started editing. That seems to always be the way it goes.

Debra Messing - 2004
Debra Lynn Messing (born August 15, 1968) is an American actress, best known for her role as Grace Adler in the sitcom Will & Grace. In 1993, Messing won praise for her acting in the pre-Broadway workshop production of Tony Kushner's play Angels in America: Perestroika. Subsequently, she appeared in several episodes of the television series NYPD Blue during 1994 and 1995. In 1995, Messing made her film debut in Alfonso Arau's A Walk in the Clouds playing the unfaithful wife of main character Paul Sutton (Keanu Reeves). This exposure led the Fox network to make her the co-star of the television sitcom, Ned & Stacey. The series lasted for two seasons, from 1995 to 1997. Messing appeared as Jerry Seinfeld's date in two episodes of the series Seinfeld: "The Wait Out" in 1996 and "The Yada Yada" in 1997. Messing turned down a starring role in another television sitcom to appear in Donald Margulies's two-character play Collected Stories, which opened at the Off-Broadway Manhattan Theater Club. She also co-starred in McHale's Navy in 1997. In 1998, Messing played a lead role as the bio-anthropologist Sloan Parker on ABC's dramatic science fiction television series Prey. During this time her agent approached her with the pilot script for the television show Will & Grace. Messing was inclined to take some time off, but the script intrigued her, and she auditioned for the role of Grace Adler, beating out Nicollette Sheridan, who later guest-starred on the show as a romantic rival ...

Matthew Lew's Lookbook for the Fairmont Event 5.4.11
Prominent Chicago artist Matthew Lew recently completed a commission for the Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park featuring 60 original cityscapes that now grace the property’s luxury suites. These 3 x 5-feet canvases offer Lew’s unique interpretation of the iconic city skyline as seen from the Adler Planetarium.
Lew also depicts details of Millennium Park, including the gardens, Pritzker Pavilion and the Fairmont Chicago. Each piece brings together a unique combination of shapes, patterns and bold colors. Furthermore, each painting is united by Lew’s incorporation of water from Lake Michigan, imbuing each piece with a true Chicago spirit.

Magis: Songs on Poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins
Magis: Songs on Poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins, II. "As Kingfishers Catch Fire" by Ryan Olivier (Excerpts)
2nd Annual Melos New Music Festival, San Francisco - August 19, 2011
As Kingfishers Catch Fire - Gerard Manley Hopkins
As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell's
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
Selves—goes itself; myself it speaks and spells,
Crying What I do is me: for that I came.
I say more: the just man justices;
Keeps grace: that keeps all his goings graces;
Acts in God's eye what in God's eye he is—
Christ—for Christ plays in ten thousand places,
Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his
To the Father through the features of men's faces.
Magis is a Latin term meaning "the more," which was used by St. Ignatius Loyola to remind himself and those around him to always contemplate what more they could do for God and consequently for others. These songs are dedicated to those in my life who have always encouraged me to do more for God and for others through my music.
"As Kingfishers Catch Fire" is dedicated to my maternal grandparents John and Vivian Maloney, and in memory of my departed grandmother Joan Maloney, who always encouraged me to be myself and who have constantly provided me with the means to explore my various artistic endeavors.
When selecting a text for the cycle, I drew upon my Jesuit education and ultimately decided on four poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins, a late 19th-century English, Jesuit priest. I admire the beautiful imagery, the unique use of rhythm, and the messages that are just as relevant today as they were when they were written.
It was important to me that each one of the songs be able to stand alone, but also for them to work dramatically as a whole. The ordered cycle follows a rhetorical form similar to that of the Liturgy of the Word from the Roman-Catholic mass. The first text, "Pied Beauty," is a praise text similar to a Gloria; the second text, "As Kingfishers Catch Fire," has many correlations to a new-testament parable; the third text, "God's Grandeur," relates the teachings of the earlier poems to modern-day man and thus acts like a homily or sermon; and the fourth text, "Heaven-Haven," is similar to a lay petition recited after the homily, which closes the Liturgy of the Word.
In the cycle there are two main types of harmonic motion, towards sharper keys and towards flatter keys. The movement towards sharper keys represents the divine, in spirituality and nature, and movement towards flatter keys represents humanity and society. The cycle opens with "Pied Beauty," in D major as man praises God for the unique and individual gifts of the earth. It moves upward to A major in "Kingfishers," as the narrator, most likely Jesus, speaks of the individuality found in nature and how the realization and individuality reveals Christ dwelling within everyone.
--Ryan Olivier
As a military brat Ryan Olivier (b. 1985) grew up in the southern United States. Born in New Orleans, he eventually returned to his birthplace to pursue compositional studies at Loyola University's College of Music. Upon graduation he made his great journey north of the Mason-Dixon line to study at the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia where he is currently a doctoral student studying with Maurice Wright, Matthew Greenbaum and Richard Brodhead. Ryan has also studied with Samuel Adler in Berlin and with Kevin Puts and Robert Aldridge at the Brevard Music Center. His music has been performed by the Momenta Quartet, members of Nonsemble 6, and the Cygnus Ensemble, and his various interests have led him to work with a wide array of media including electronics, video, and dance. His electroacoustic work has been featured at Miami's 12 Nights Festival, Pennsylvania State University's Crosscurrents Festival, Temple University's Cybersounds Concert Series, the Society of Composers, Inc. Regional Conference, the New York City Electroc-acoustic Music Festival, the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States National Conference, and the International Computer Music Conference.
