The Rise and Fall of Austria or Habsburg Empire / Österreich
Austria was ruled by the Habsburg dynasty from 1278/1282 until 1918. Therefore, historical Austria is also known as the Habsburg Empire or the Habsburg Monarchy. The Habsburgs made Austria a great power ever since 1477, when they inherited much of what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Soon afterwards they inherited many more lands by their marriage policies. During the 16th century, the Habsburgs ruled over large parts of Europe (not to speak of their enormous American colonial empire). The centuries afterwards they remained a great power until World War I, when the nationalist thoughts in Europe finally divided the old empire into many small states. It's important to put in mind that Austria has always been a "part" of Germany until the 19th century. Indeed, the German Empire didn't exist until 1871, but the Germans (Austrians included) always realized they shared a same language and culture, and the medieval Holy Roman Empire actually was more or less a German state until it fell apart in the fatal 13th century. Since 1452, the Habsburgs were (with one short exception) the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, which was by now virtually a very loose confederation of states. However, the position of the Holy Roman Emperor gave the Habsburgs privileges and some sort of loyalty from the German princes, although monarchs like the Prussian kings didn't care. The Austrians were finally abandoned outside the German Empire in 1871. Music: Johann Strauss II - An der ...

The Night of the Hunter (Best Scene)- Duality of Good and Evil
This scene is the standoff between Rachel Cooper (Lillian Gish) and "Preacher/Reverend" Harry Powell--the ex-con (Robert Mitchum). Clip from legendary actor Charles Laughton's only film directing effort: 'Night of the Hunter' (1955) - Hymn: Leaning on The Everlasting Arms. The Night of the Hunter was a collaboration of Charles Laughton and screenwriter James Agee. Laughton drew on the harsh, angular look of German expressionist films of the 1920s. The film was shot in black and white in the styles and motifs of German Expressionism (bizarre shadows, stylized dialogue, distorted perspectives, surreal sets, odd camera angles) to create a simplified and disturbing mood that reflects the sinister character of Powell, the nightmarish fears of the children, and the sweetness of their savior Rachel. In 1992, The Night of the Hunter was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in its National Film Registry. Optical Illusion: Both Atheism & Theism Are Equally Valid
Using this well-known optical illusion, I demonstrate that both atheism and theism are correct. It's a matter of seeing the world one way, and only flipping your worldview to see the other side. Atheism and theism are intertwined, mutually dependent on each other. To better expand your atheism, you need to believe in God. And in order to understand the reality of God, you need to embrace atheism. One needs to know God in His non-existence in order to fully know His existence. This is dualistic reality is understood mystically rather than rationalistically. To grasp the full picture of reality, one needs to embrace both atheism and theism equally.

Marx vs The Egocentrism of Max Stirner (Introduction to the Concept of the Ego), Part 2 of 3
Do we have a self at a certain place in our brain, something that does the experiencing? Modern neuroscience shows that it's more the networking in the whole brain that is our consciousness. Homunculus, from Goethe's play "Faustus": en.wikipedia.org In the past, idealist philosophers thought that consciousness is an ideal part of reality. Marx did not accept that, he thought that pure self-consciousness, able to be aware of its existence wholy independantly of it being in the material world and and in society, is fiction! He said that man created himself in the process of social labour, and that it can be said that nature is humanized nature and consciousness is the way nature has self-knowledge. I think he was thinking in an evolutionary way. (Crazy hair, I know!) The third part (again with crazy hair) is coming shortly, where I will talk about Stirner's egocentrism.

Angela Mailander - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
Also see batgap.com I was born in Germany in 1940 and have lived in France, Greece, India, China, and seven states within the US When I was fifteen, I taught my first class of ESL and, eight years later, began to develop my own approach. I've taught Literature, Writing, Creative Writing (publishing a couple of chapbooks of poetry) and have teaching experience at every level of instruction from pre-school to grad school. I've also taught History, Linguistics, German, French, and Russian. Two Ph.Ds—one in English, one in Comparative Studies—didn't turn out to be a career advantage. They made men with only one of them too nervous, but I hear that too much education is no longer a problem for women. Is it true? Spending 28 years in an inter-racial marriage and raising a family was as valuable an education as my stint in academe. I'm still teaching, taking care of teenage boys in my home, and enjoy art in my spare time. Interview recorded 11/18/2009.
