The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards (also known as FAMAS Awards) are the annual honors given by the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS), an organization composed of prize-winning writers and movie columnists, for achievements in the Philippine cinema for a calendar year. Established since 1952, it the oldest existing film industry award-giving body in the Philippines and one of the oldest in Asia (the oldest is the Kinema Junpo Awards in Japan). The FAMAS Awards, from 1952 to 1982, was the highest Filipino film award a filmmaker or artisan could receive in the local movie industry.

In 1982, after the inception of the Film Academy of the Philippines (Luna) Awards, the true Philippine equivalent of the Oscars (where academy members are film professionals who nominate and choose awardees of the year) was mandated by the Philippine government, FAMAS was unofficially relegated as secondary to Luna Awards. Nevertheless, winning a FAMAS Award is still held in high regard because of its age and prestige.

The FAMAS Award is one of the highly distinguished film award bodies in the country. Others included are the ''Luna Awards'' (Film Academy), the ''Gawad Urian Awards'' of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (Filipino Film Critics), and the ''Star Awards for Movies and Television'' by the Philippine Movie Press Club. Winning all four of the awards in one category for the same work is considered as winning a "Grand Slam".

History

The Maria Clara Awards

The forerunner of the FAMAS Award was the Maria Clara Awards, established by the Manila Times Publishing, Inc. under the tutelage of Dr. Alejandro Roces in 1951. The first awards in the Philippine movie industry were doled out for the movies of 1950-1951 and for the year 1952. The award statuette, which bore the figure of Maria Clara, a character in Dr. José Rizal's immortal novel ''Noli Me Tangere'', was sculpted by National Artist for Sculpture Guillermo Tolentino. For two years, the Maria Clara Awards honored the Philippine movie industry's cinematic achievements .

Establishment of FAMAS

Due to the complaints that the Maria Clara Awards were irrelevant because movie writers and not film artisans and filmmakers are the ones who are voting for the awards, six writers (Atty. Flavio G. Macaso, Vic Generoso, Mario Mijares Lopez, Paulo Dizon, Amado Yasoma and Eddie Infante) established the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences. The FAMAS Awards formally replaced the Maria Clara Awards. In its inception, FAMAS had movie writers, columnists and studio publicists as its voting members.

The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences bestows the FAMAS Award of Merit to individuals who have used their skills and craftsmanship to the best of their abilities for the development and creation of a Filipino motion picture. FAMAS was somewhat designed after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) of the United States and was originally named ''Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the Philippines'' before AMPAS protested against the usage of their name.

The statuette

The FAMAS Award of Merit statuette was modeled from the great screen legend and FAMAS Award-winner Rosa Rosal. The varnished gold-painted wood statuette boasts of a Balintawak-clad woman whose raised hands holds a four-spoke film reel. She stands on a black cylindrical pedestal, which is encircled with a thin gold leaf that bears the initials and full name of FAMAS in big black letters, the awards ceremony, the category in which it was won, the name of the winner, the place where it was given and the signature of the FAMAS President. The statuette design itself has never changed over the years.

The word FAMAS was coined by Filipino movie legends Jaime de la Rosa and Rosa Rosal, who decided on naming the Philippines' equivalent to the Oscars as FAME. FAMAS is the Filipino version (not a translation) of the word FAME.

Prestige

The FAMAS was the sole award-giving body for film in the Philippines from 1952 until 1976. Within that period, FAMAS alone has awarded the most outstanding performers and craftsmen of Filipino films, from screen legend Rosa Rosal to master director Gerardo de Leon. Winning a FAMAS Award became the motivation for many film craftsmen, for it was, after all, the Philippines' only counterpart of the Oscars. The awards itself, then held mostly at the Manila Hotel, the oldest premiere hotel of Manila, became the biggest annual event in the Philippine movie industry.

First major controversy

In 1960, Sampaguita Pictures and Vera-Perez Productions withdrew their participation from the Academy because the agreement between producers on who receives the FAMAS Awards was not followed. The agreement was that each of the Big Four studios (LVN Pictures, Sampaguita Pictures, Premiere Productions and Lebran International) would receive the top awards. For example, if the Best Picture goes to one studio, the acting awards should go the other three studios and the directing award should go to another studio. The 1960 FAMAS Awards, nevertheless, failed to honor Sampaguita Pictures with an award, so Sampaguita Pictures and its sister company Vera-Perez Productions withdrew from the Academy. In addition, Sampaguita's mogul, Dr. Jose Perez, returned all of the FAMAS Awards that the studio have won so far by placing them on public view in his Vera-Perez Gardens. Other movie studios also withdrew from the Academy, though they did not return their statuettes. Because of this, in 1961, the FAMAS revamped its membership rules and removed studio representation membership, which left the FAMAS with solely movie writers and columnists.

Emergence of other awards

After a Best Actress tie controversy in 1973 which drew dissension from the public (see ''FAMAS Records'' below), FAMAS invited film critics as members of its nominating and awarding committee. These critics left FAMAS in 1976 to form the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) (or the Filipino Film Critics) and subsequently established the Gawad Urian Awards.

The FAMAS's moniker, "Philippines' counterpart of the Oscars," was rescinded by the government in 1981, when it established the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) under Executive Order No. 640-A. The FAP was patterned after the AMPAS. In addition, other award-giving bodies have sprung up over the years, among the most notable are the Star Awards for Movies in 1985, the Catholic Mass Media Awards of the Catholic Church, the Gawad Pasado of the Film Desk Critics' Circle and recently, the Golden Screen Awards of the Entertainment Press.

Restructuring of 2003

In 2003, the Best Actress Award of the 51st FAMAS Awards went to Aleck Bovick for a role in a "bold" (soft-porn) movie, ''Tampisaw'', much to the chagrin of some people in the industry. Many people, including previous FAMAS winner Amalia Fuentes, felt FAMAS had killed itself when it gave a FAMAS to Bovick. Nevertheless, FAMAS did its own cleansing. FAMAS President Art Padua restructured the FAMAS by inviting more Palanca Award-winners (Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines) to the Academy and dismissing members who have gone AWOL.

Leadership Crisis and Revocation of SEC

On May 6, 2003, due to non-compliance with reportorial requirements, the corporate charter of the FAMAS was revoked by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This move of the SEC gave FAMAS three years to wind-up its activities. This move also prohibited the staging of an awards night, which is the major activity of the FAMAS. Nevertheless, under the presidency of Art Padua, the FAMAS was able to stage the 52nd and 53rd FAMAS Awards.

In 2004, fifteen new members of the FAMAS were allowed by FAMAS president Art Padua to vote on the annual elections. This was questioned by some members of the FAMAS, some of which are lifetime members of the corporation, who then walked out of the election. FAMAS president Art Padua considered this as a resignation from the corporation, which sparked further unrest in the corporation.

On June 25, 2005, Col. Jimmy Tiu was elected unanimously by 34 of the 53 members of the FAMAS. Nevertheless, Art Padua did not acknowledge the results of the voting, and he considered the elected officers as the "FAMAS breakaway group." This leadership crisis would have a tremendous effect on the 54th FAMAS Awards.

In April 2006, the FAMAS, as represented by Art Padua, released the Official Nominees for the Awards, and on the next months had released the date and venue of the awards. On July 15, the day of the awards night, a 72-hour temporary restraining order was issued by Judge Felixberto Olalia of Manila Regional Trial Court against Art Padua and his set of officers from holding the 54th FAMAS Awards Night. The ruling favored Col. Tiu, the president of the breakaway group. The order was issued because, as presented by Col. Tiu, FAMAS ceased to exist as a registered organization of the Securities and Exchange Commission on May 26, 2003. As a SEC non-registered organization, all the FAMAS could do was to hold "winding-up activities" which does not include an awards night. This led to the postponement of the 54th FAMAS Awards night.

In order to go around the SEC restriction of holding the FAMAS Awards, FAMAS decided to resurrect the Maria Clara Awards in order to continue the long legacy of the still-beleaguered FAMAS and to continue awarding Filipino motion picture excellence. In holding the Maria Claras instead of the FAMAS, the FAMAS indeed does not hold its primary and only function, which is the holding of an awards night, which is not therefore a violation of the SEC ruling. The Maria Clara Awards were held on October 13, 2006 in a simple and humble event at Golden Fortune Restaurant in Manila. In retrospect, the FAMAS would not be awarded until the leadership crisis and the registration revocation issues of the corporation are not resolved.

Nevertheless, the group of Art Padua still held the 54th FAMAS Awards on November 12, 2006 at the Main Hall of the National Broadcasting Network Building in Quezon City, despite the SEC ruling against holding an awards night. The awards night set a trend because it is the first awards night in Philippine history to be shown as a feature of another TV program (Pilipinas, Ngayon Na of NBN Channel 4) instead of being a television special.

In 2007, just right before the 55th FAMAS Awards, the Supreme Court of the Philippines finally resolved the leadership crisis of FAMAS and handed the leadership to Art Padua, who is currently the longest-reigning president in the history of the Academy. An appeal to the Court of Appeals by Col. Tiu is still pending though.

Gabi ng Parangal (The Awards Night)

The FAMAS' Gabi ng Parangal (Awards Night) is the most colorful night of the Philippine motion picture industry. It is here where the bigwigs of the movie industry, the brightest stars and the most talented artisans of the industry gather together and showcase their best clothing finds right in front of their fans and televiewers. Various Filipino famous fashion designers have clothed the best of Philippine cinema during these events. This is also the night when movie kings and queens finally get their due for their artistry in the field of acting, and where the greatest minds of Filipino film finally get their own "Oscar," or in this case, their FAMAS.

The Gabi ng Parangal has been hosted by various locations such as the Manila Hotel, Araneta Coliseum, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Manila Hilton Hotel, to name a few. It has also been carried by different television networks such as RPN-9 and ABS-CBN 2. It was televised live from the carrier station until the 21st century, when it was aired at delayed telecasts due to difficulties in airing the program live.

Special Awards

The FAMAS also awards thirteen special awards, the most for any award-giving body in the Philippines. These awards, except for the Hall of Fame, Circle of Excellence, Natatanging Alagad ng Sining and Huwarang Bituin ng FAMAS awards, are awarded annually:

FAMAS Hall of Fame Award is bestowed to a person who has won five FAMAS Awards in a certain category.

FAMAS Circle of Excellence Award is the highest award the FAMAS can bestow on an individual, given to a Hall of Fame inductee who had given a performance that was worthy of a FAMAS Award.

FAMAS Lifetime Achievement Award is given to motion picture performers and artisans who have made indelible and lifelong contributions to the development of the Filipino motion picture industry, and first awarded in 1989.

FAMAS Grand Award is given to an individual or an organization who have supported and helped the FAMAS throughout the years and was first awarded in 2005.

Atty. Flavio G. Macaso Memorial Award is awarded to FAMAS members who have shown utmost loyalty and service to the Academy. Named in honor of the first president of the Academy, it was first awarded in 1998.

Dr. Jose Perez Memorial Award for Journalism is given to managers, public relations officers, entertainment columnists and starbuilders who have demonstrated great mastery and professionalism in handling the biggest stars of the Philippine movie industry, as well as advancing the state of the Filipino motion picture industry through the use of journalism. The award was named after the Sampaguita Pictures' mogul. It was first awarded in 1984, and from 1997 to present.

Fernando Poe, Jr. Memorial Award is given to an outstanding action movie star whose overflowing charisma, great physique and loyal following in the action genre has made him a great icon of the genre. It was named in honor of the King of Philippine movies, Fernando Poe, Jr.

German Moreno Youth Achievement Award is given to a pair of young male and female stars who have shown great promise as a motion picture artisan and actor in the past calendar year. Award is decided by German Moreno, one of Philippine show business' best known talent discoverer and developer.

Golden Artist Award is given to performers who have gained local recognition for their cinematic and/or artistic excellence.

International Artist Award

Posthumous Award gives recognition to recently deceased motion picture artisans' exemplary achievements in the motion picture industry. First awarded in 2007.

Presidential Award gives recognition to an individual who has helped the cause of the FAMAS or of the motion picture industry as a whole greatly on a certain calendar year or any given time through any way possible.

Special Citation Award: given to certain individuals' exemplary achievements in the performing arts and the motion picture industry, whose achievements may or may not be a contribution to the motion picture industry but to the arts as a whole

Lou Salvador Sr. Memorial Award was given as a recognition to an exemplary comedic motion picture thespian who has established a great career and following through astounding comedic prowess onscreen. Awarded from 1998–2004.

Huwarang Bituin ng FAMAS Award honored a motion picture thespian who has shown great charisma, incredible acting prowess, exemplary social skills off-camera and loyal following over a long-spanning career filled with memorable and award-winning performances in Philippine Cinema's greatest screen classics and/or profitable releases. Awarded from 2002–2003,and in 2009.

Dr. Ciriaco Santiago Memorial Award honored performers and directors of productions who have gained international recognition for their cinematic excellence. The award, named after the studio chief of Premiere Productions, was awarded in 1958, 1963, and from 1998–2000.

International Prestige Award of Merit was given to Filipino film productions that have been recognized internationally for their superior cinematic quality and artistry. The award was given in 1957, 1958 and 1961.

Gregorio Valdez Memorial Award

Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Special Award was given to either honor the singular achievement of an individual in raising the standards of Philippine motion pictures or to recognize any achievement of an individual that was worth a worthy recognition from the Academy.

One-time FAMAS Awards

Centennial Award was given in the 46th FAMAS Awards (1997) in 1998 to films that honestly reflected Philippine culture and traditions in its entirety and celebrated patriotism, in celebration of the centennial of Philippine independence. The winners of the award were ''Rizal sa Dapitan'' (1997) and ''Damong Ligaw'' (1997).

Bukas Palad Award was given in the 47th FAMAS Awards (1998) in 1999 to honor the generosity and indelible contributions of the Philippines' original Queen of Talk, gossip columnist and TV host Inday Badiday, to the Philippine motion picture industry.

Bituin ng FAMAS Mula Noon Hanggang Ngayon Award was given in the 50th FAMAS Awards (2001) in 2002 as a part of its Golden Jubilee celebration. The was given to former FAMAS winner Dolphy, as a recognition of his almost six decades in show business, his indelible contribution to the Philippine motion picture industry and his status as the Philippine King of Comedy

Natatanging Alagad ng Sining Award was given during in 2004 to honor the achievements of the King of Philippine Movies, Fernando Poe, Jr., who died just six months prior to the awards

FAMAS records

In 1973, FAMAS awarded the first tie in the history of Philippine cinema. The tie was in the Best Actress category, with both Boots Anson-Roa and Vilma Santos sharing the honors. Because a tie was unheard of, the public dissented the vote.

The longest FAMAS Awards telecast was in 2002 when FAMAS celebrated its golden jubilee. The awards night, which was held at the FAMAS Awards' original home, the Manila Hotel, was held from 9 PM to 3 AM.

The first major acting award for a role in a "bold" (soft-porn) movie was awarded in the 2003 FAMAS Awards to Aleck Bovick for the movie ''Tampisaw''. (See ''Restructuring of 2003'' above)

For the 53rd FAMAS Awards (2004), FAMAS partnered with the ABS-CBN Channel 2 for the production of the annual awards night on June 26, 2005. As a result, the show became the first awards night in the Philippines to be telecast all over the world through one of its international satellite stations, Pinoy Central TV.

Marian Rivera (born Marian Gracia Rivera on August 12, 1984 in Madrid, Spain) is a Filipina actress and occasional singer-dancer. Her first TV role came in 2005 via TAPE Inc.'s afternoon drama, ''Kung Mamahalin Mo Lang Ako'' in the lead that was aired in GMA Network. In 2007 she was cast for the title role in the Philippine remake of ''MariMar''. She released two studio albums: ''Marian Rivera Dance Hits'' and ''Retro Crazy'' sold 75,000 copies. She currently signed with GMA Network.

Personal life

Marian Rivera was born in Madrid, Spain to Francisco Javier Gracia Alonso, a Spaniard, and Amalia Rivera , a Filipina of Caviteña.

Career

Rivera first starred in afternoon soap operas for TAPE Inc. and GMA Network including ''Kung Mamahalin Mo Lang Ako'', ''Agawin Mo Man Ang Lahat'' and ''Pinakamamahal''. She acted in ''Enteng Kabisote 2: Okay Ka Fairy Ko: The Legend Continues''. Later GMA Network cast her into mother roles for the afternoon Philippine-Malaysian drama ''Muli''.

Rivera formally signed a contract in GMA Network, Inc. and starred the title role of ''MariMar'', which premiered on August 13, 2007. Later, Rivera was awarded in GMMSF Inc. in the 38th Box-Office Entertainment Awards.

In 2008, Rivera played the role of ''Dyesebel'' which aired on April 28, 2008. She appeared in ''Ang Babaeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang''.

In 2010, Rivera, starred in the TV remake of ''Endless Love''.

In 2011, Rivera, starred in GMA Network's series ''Amaya''.

Film career

In 2006, Rivera signed a contract for Regal Films andwas cast in the horror movie, ''Pamahiin''.

Rivera starred in two MMFF movie entries: ''Bahay Kubo'' and ''Desperadas''. In 2008, Rivera starred in the romantic comedy ''My Best Friend's Girlfriend''

In 2009, she then played the role of Nieves, ''The Engkanto Slayer,'' in a title episode of ''Shake, Rattle & Roll X'', an MMFF entry. She worked with singer and songwriter Ogie Alcasid and the ''Desperadas'' cast, for the sequel, ''Desperadas 2.'' She also starred in the horror movie, ''Tarot''.

Nora Aunor (born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor on May 21, 1953) is a multi-awarded Filipino actress, singer and producer. Aunor has also topbilled several stage plays, television shows, and concerts. She is regarded as the "Superstar in Philippine Entertainment Industry". In 1999, Aunor received the ''Centennial Honor for the Arts'' awarded by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). She was the only film actress included in the prestigious list of awardees. In 2010, she was hailed by the Green Planet Awards as one of the ''10 Asian Best Actresses of the Decade''.

Cinema

Aunor has received numerous national and international awards and nominations. She is the first Filipino actress to win an International acting award in a major Film Festival (Cairo 1995 for the movie ''The Flor Contemplacion Story''). She has been directed by four Philippine National Artist Awardees, Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana, Lino Brocka, and Ishmael Bernal. Since the late 1960s, Nora Aunor has appeared in more than 170 films.

Music

Aunor has released more than 260 singles and recorded more than 500 songs, over more than 40 albums. She has notched more than 30 gold singles; with estimated sales of one million units, her cover of "Pearly Shells" (1971) is one of the biggest-selling singles in the Philippines.

Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan, better known as Sharon Cuneta, is a popular and multi-awarded Filipino singer, actress and TV host dubbed as Megastar of Philippine Entertainment, fondly called Mega by fans and people from the entertainment industry. Her success in the movies (53 starring roles), television (9 shows) and recording (40 albums ) make her possibly the greatest Filipino entertainer of all time. Her popularity has translated well into the field of advertising, where she is the highest paid and most effective Filipino celebrity endorser. Cuneta's long list of endoresements run the gamut from fastfood chain to bank, from make-up line to electronics, from ice cream to tele-communication company.

On 22 November 2011, following months of speculations, Sharon’s big move to TV5 was made official by signing a staggering 1 Billion contract with the Kapatid Network – the highest ever paid to a Filipino artist. She parted ways with ABS-CBN, her home network of 24 years, on a cordial note.

Early life

(born January 6, 1966) Her mother, Elaine Gamboa, hails from Santa Ana, Pampanga while her father, Pablo Cuneta (1910–2000), was mayor of Pasay City for four decades. She is half-Tagalog on her paternal side and one-fourth Kapampangan and one-fourth Spanish-American on her maternal side.

Cuneta grew up surrounded by music, listening to her dad's collection of 45s, 78s and 33s. Her aunt is '60s Shingaling Sweetheart Helen Gamboa. Cuneta during her early years made her first TV appearance in Kuya Ike Lozada's show, in the Bulilit portion, where she mimicked her Tita Helen's songs. Cuneta was just as young when she appeared in her first movie, the Rosanna Ortiz-George Estregan starrer ''Lovers for Hire''. She played one of Roderick Paulate's playmates.

She attended International School Manila (Makati Campus), Boston University (USA) and the University of the Philippines Open University.

1978–1983: Rise to Fame

Cuneta first appeared on Philippine pop charts in 1978 as a 12-year-old, singing ''"Mr. D.J."'' which was very popular and earned her the title of "D.J.'s Pet" (which was also the title of her first album). ''"Mr. D.J."'', together with other hit singles including ''"Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko"'' and ''"High School Life"'' were released during the Manila Sound era. Other hit albums followed, and Cuneta was asked to sing on many movie soundtracks of the time - becoming the first "movie soundtrack star" in the country.

She starred in projects from Viva Films. At age 15, her first feature film, 1981's ''Dear Heart'' paired her with fellow teeny-bopper Gabby Concepcion. The movie was a huge success thus crowning her as the Popular Teenage Queen of RP movies by Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (GMMSF).

Her early movie roles launched her as a "poor little rich girl". Although raised in an influential rich political family, she appealed to the ''sosyal'' (socially rich) and ''masa'' (poor masses) crowd of Philippine society, with her intelligence, humor and down-to-earth personality.

She started hosting with other teenage prodigies on ''GMA Supershow'', later called ''Germspesyal'', with German Moreno and ''C.U.T.E. (Call Us Two For Entertainment)'' with her aunt from Pampanga, former actress Helen Gamboa, via GMA 7.

She paved her way to fame in the early 1980s as a young recording artist and eventually made it successful as a teen actress. Sharon was one of the top stars amongst her contemporaries together with Maricel Soriano and Julie Vega. Cuneta earned acting awards in her early years in the business. ''Bukas Luluhod Ang Mga Tala'' was her history-breaking movie in 1984 and followed by another certified blockbuster ''Bituing Walang Ningning'' in 1985, and was tagged as The Philippines' Megastar. On 1986 Sharon Cuenta was meant to duet with Shirley Jeffrey from being signed to Viva Records but was never seen on the recording studio.

1984–Present: Mega Stardom

Cuneta's success was witnessed by many of the Filipino people. Her movies were all box-office hits, crowning her the Box-Office Queen for many years from 1984 where she wore her first crown. Her recordings were chart-toppers and her television shows were loved by many Filipinos. Her acting abilities were also recognized by the critics and various award-giving bodies granting her the Grandslam Best Actress in 1996 for the movie Madrasta. She became a household name in the Philippines resulting in her face being seen everywhere: on big billboards, on TV commercials and in product endorsements. Her popularity made her one of the most admired Filipinos.

Her musical-variety show, ''The Sharon Cuneta Show'' was one of the longest-running television shows in Philippine show business from 1986 through 1997.

She achieved consistent recognition both in her recording and acting career. Cuneta's movie projects were mostly certified blockbusters and history-breaking.

Cuneta achieved mega stardom since then and considered as one of the Philippine cinema's greatest box-office queens.

1980s: The New Philippine Movie Queen

1984 was the year when Cuneta's producers at Viva Films planned to change her image from ''poor-little-rich-girl image'' into ''from rags to riches'' type of movies. She made three movies that year including the movie ''Bukas Luluhod ang Mga Tala'' which broke all box-office records and made her the new Box-office Queen. She continued to make movies following the rags to riches formula and most of those successful movies came from popular comic novels like ''Bukas Luluhod Ang Mga Tala'', ''Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin, Bituing Walang Ningning'' and ''Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita'' to name a few. She also won the Best Actress Award for the movies ''Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin?'' from FAMAS Awards and ''Sa Hirap at Ginhawa'' from Film Academy of the Philippines.

Because of her popularity, and her movies were acknowledged as having established a consistency at the box office, the Philippine press began to refer to her as 'Megastar' in their write-ups.

Aside from doing blockbuster movies, Cuneta also had a weekly musical variety show ''The Sharon Cuneta Show'' every Sunday night, featuring guests such as popular singer-songwriter Clair Marlo.

She married her love-team partner Gabby Concepcion and bore their first child named Maria Kristina Cassandra in 1985, but her popularity was not affected and made even stronger.

She continued to make blockbuster movies with her mother studio Viva Films and eventually elevated to a Hall of Fame as Box Office Queen in the later part of the 1980s.

1990s: Grandslam Best Actress Era

Cuneta's reign as box-office queen even made stronger when she did movies with the popular action stars like Fernando Poe Jr. ''(Kahit Konting Pagtingin-1990)'' Robin Padilla '',(Maging Sino Ka Man-1991)'', Ramon 'Bong' Revilla Jr. ''(Pangako Sa 'Yo-1992)'', Rudy Fernandez ''(Kung Kailangan Mo Ako-1993)'' to name a few. All those movies were certified blockbusters, that though she was already elevated to Hall of Fame as Box-Office Queen in 1990, she was crowned again in 1991 through 1993 because of the success of her movies.

For the first time, in 1996, Cuneta made a movie outside her mother studio Viva Films via the movie Madrasta from Star Cinema. This movie garnered her the Best Actress Award from all major award-giving bodies in the Philippines, hence a Grandslam win for her outstanding performance in the movie. Cuneta became one of the few actresses (along with Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, and Lorna Tolentino) to be given a grand slam best actress award in Philippine Cinema. In this era, she achieved continuous recognition in her recording, hosting and acting career.

On April 28, 1996, Sharon Cuneta walked down the aisle for the second time, to marry Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan. She left the country for a while to be with her husband in Boston who was studying at Harvard University. Even though Cuneta was not in the country, she remained in the limelight because of her many TV commercials that Filipinos were able to view everyday. She did two movies before she left for the States. When she arrived in 1998, ABS-CBN produced a talk show for her entitled ''Sharon''.

2000s: Mega30, Three Decades of Megastardom

Year 2000, Cuneta managed to maintain her status as the Queen of Philippine movies by filming another blockbuster movie from StarCinema entitled ''Minsan Minahal Kita.'' Cuneta's late father, Pablo Cuneta, was mayor of Pasay City for four decades. He died at the age of 90 in September 2000.

She gave birth to her second child Simone Francesca Emmanuelle (Frankie) in December 2000 and her third daughter was born, Mariel Daniella Sophia (Miel), in September 2004, and decided to leave her television show.

In 2002, at age 36, Cuneta was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Board of Directors of the Phil. Association of Recording Industry via the Dangal ng Musikang Plilipino Award on her 25th years in music industry.

In 2003 she made a film with independent producer Unitel Pictures entitled ''Crying Ladies''. With this film, she won a Best Actress award from The Brussels International Independent Film Festival held in 2004. Prior to that, she was awarded Best Actress locally by PASADO Awards and People's Choice in the 2003 Metro Manila Film Festival.

She did not make any movies from 2004 through 2007 while she concentrated her career in television and music. Her album ''Isn't it Romantic'' was successful enough to warrant the making of ''Isn't it Romantic II''.

On January 6, 2006, The Megastar returned to television from her maternity leave with a 40th birthday celebration on ABS-CBN's ''Ang Pagbabalik Ng Bituin'' ("The Return of the Star"). The following month, a new talk show entitled ''Sharon'' aired, which she is still currently hosting.

After a long rest from filmmaking, she made another movie entitled ''Caregiver'' in 2008 which, according to ABS-CBN, is their most expensive film. In this film, Cuneta played the role of a school teacher working abroad as a caregiver. The movie was a certified blockbuster making it one of the highest grossing films of 2008.

Her long-time nanny/yaya Loreta Benitez aka "Yaya Luring" passed away last December 19, 2009 at the age of 83 due to cardiac arrest.

On January 12, 2010, coinciding with her annual birthday show, her self-titled magazine ''Sharon at Home'' was launched and has since become one of the best-selling titles of ABS-CBN Publishing.

She is now hosting a talent show for young women entitled "Star Power" and has singers Christian Bautista & Erik Santos as her co-hosts. Her panel of judges are Edgar Mortiz, Mitch Valdez, & Billy Crawford.

On November 22, 2011, She signed a 5 years contract with TV5 for 1 billion Pesos according to celebrity tweets in microblogging site Twitter, the biggest talent fee ever in any local artist in the Philippine Showbiz History, the biggest network deal, ever, for a local celebrity.

International Success

Cuneta is the first Filipina artist to sell out at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium first in 1988 and her latest June 11, 2005 concert. Her poster is included in The Shrine's Hall of Fame next to stars Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand and the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. She created a traffic jam in the 1990s and puzzled the former Mayor of Los Angeles Tom Bradley. After hearing of her success, the mayor attended the concert and awarded Cuneta with an Honorary Key to the City of Los Angeles.

She sang a duet in the 2001 with Hong Kong star Andy Lau, with whom she sang "In Your Eyes" composed by Jim Brickman.

Personal life

Sharon Cuneta publicly married Gabby Concepcion in 1984, which was later annulled due to irreconcilable differences. Their wedding ceremony became the most attended nuptial in Philippine history, which was held at the Manila Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, and was personally sponsored by Ferdinand Marcos and various high-ranking Roman Catholic prelates of the Republic of the Philippines. Piolo Jaime Pascual (born January 12, 1977, Manila, Philippines) is a Filipino model, film and television actor, musician, and producer.

Biography

Born to Amelia “Amy” tricia Ann. Peejay (his nickname) was considered a “miracle baby.” On or about her sixth month of pregnancy, Amelia was told that her unborn child no longer had a heartbeat. A dilation and curettage (D&C;) was to be performed but, due to low blood count, it was postponed for a couple of weeks. A return to the hospital later resulted a confirmation that the baby was alive. He was due December 8, 1976 but not delivered until January 12, 1977 by Dra. Lageras at the ANTY hospital in Manila. Piolo was a healthy baby boy, born with two teeth. Piolo’s father, Philip, was the son of a full-blooded German, Harold Herzig and Aurora Victoriano who remarried a Pascual after Harold’s death. Piolo lost his father when he was sixteen. Piolo now lives happily with his brother Jere Gomze in an extravagant house in Beverly Hills.

He attended San Miguel Catholic School in Malacañan. He later transferred to St. Francis School in Santa Ana, Manila where he was introduced to acting. He joined the school’s theater, Teatro ni Kiko, when he was in fifth grade.

Pascual got his start on German Moreno’s ''That's Entertainment''. It was there that a staff member saw a potential star in Piolo. He was asked to audition and later got a call back to be part of the show. After a year, he went on to audition for more shows like ATBP and Star Circle 2, both of ABS-CBN. But just a week before his Star Circle launch, he had to immigrate to California, in the United States.

In California, Piolo worked odd jobs and even became an emergency room admitting clerk. Between his jobs, he managed to attend acting workshops. He returned to the Philippines and enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas; his degree is in Sociology. It was at UST that he continued his theater work via Teatro Tomasino.

His son Iñigo Lazaro (1997) lives in California with his mother.

After courting her for two years,He announced KC Concepcion is his Girlfriend .

Career

In 2003, Pascual played the role of Jules Bartolome in ''Dekada '70''. He collected eight awards in the Best Supporting Actor category. ''Dekada '70'' was the Philippine entry for the Best Foreign Film Language category in the 76th Academy Awards in 2004. In addition, ''Dekada '70'' was exhibited in the New Cinema of the World section of the Cannes Film Festival in May 2005.

Pascual is a member of ABS-CBN's ''Star Magic''. He celebrated his 10th year anniversary in 2007 with a coffee table book (''Piolo: Believing''), a fifth solo album (''Timeless''), and a solo concert at the Araneta Coliseum.

Pascual turned producer with ''Manila'', an independent twinbill film. After its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2009, ''Manila'' had its official Philippines premiere on cinemas in July 2009 as the opening film of the 5th Cinemalaya Film Festival.

There is a Piolo Pascual I-Love-You-Forever fan club founded and headed by P. Valdez.
