The Paris-Based OECD: Pushing Obama's Big-Government Agenda With Your Tax Dollars
The Paris-Based OECD: Pushing Obama's Big-Government Agenda With Your Tax Dollars
American taxpayers finance nearly one-fourth of the budget for the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, an international bureaucracy that routinely advocates for more government - including more taxes and spending in the United States. In just the past couple of years, the OECD has used American tax dollars to advocate Obamacare-type health policies, push for failed Keynesian stimulus spending, promote Al Gore-style carbon taxes, and urge the enactment a value-added tax. This CF&P Foundation video advocated in order to reduce wasteful spending and protect America's free market system, American subsidies for this Paris-based bureaucracy should be eliminated. www.freedomandprosperity.org

Chile gains entry into OECD 12 Jan 10
Chile gains entry into OECD 12 Jan 10
Chile has become the first South American country to be admitted into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Michelle Bachelet, Chile's president, says entry into the group is a major stride towards joining the ranks of developed nations. Chile has, in the last two decades, gone from being one of the poorest countries in Latin America to one of the richest. Based in France, the OECD comprises 30 countries that promote principles of representative democracy and free-market economy. It traditionally includes rich and industrialised nations such as the US, Japan and South Korea. In recent years, it has also made efforts to give entry to developing economies such as Mexico and Poland. Membership - given to countries that meet certain political and economic requirements - allows member states to discuss and co-ordinate global social, environmental, and economic policies. Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman, reporting from Santiago, explains that Chile's free market economy was one factor that helped it gain entry into the OECD. "An economic powerhouse like Brazil, for example, doesn't have such an open economy and has many protectionist measures," she said.

OECD: Israel 5th in life expectancy
OECD: Israel 5th in life expectancy
A new report released Wednesday by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveals encouraging figures about the healthcare situation in Israel. Israeli life expectancy is among the highest in the world, and fifth among OECD countries, infant mortality rate is among the lowest in the world, and a significant improvement has been recorded in the treatment of chronic diseases. And yet, Israel's situation is not so good when it comes to the treatment of asthma and lung diseases. According to the report, most OECD countries recorded a significant rise in life expectancy rates in recent decades thanks to the improvement in living conditions, public health interventions and the improvement in medical care.Israel has one of the world's highest life expectancies, standing at 81.6 years in 2009 -- about two years more than the OECD average of 79.5. Japan had the highest life expectancy in 2009 -- 83 years. The difference between male and female life expectancy in Israel in 2009 stood at 3.8 years in favor of women. Men live 79.7 years on average; women live 83.5 years. This difference is relatively low compared to the OECD average, which stood at 5.5 years in favor of women.

OECD Reports: World Economy Worse Than Expected
OECD Reports: World Economy Worse Than Expected
SHAKESPEARE: Now the global economic crisis seems to have more dire consequences. According to the OECD, global economic indicators for 2009 will be worse than previously predicted. Heres more. STORY: A report released on Tuesday by The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) offered a dismal view of the current state of the world economy. [Klaus Schmidt-Hibbel, OECD Chief Economist]: "The world economy is in the midst of its deepest and most synchronized recession in our lifetimes, certainly since the 1930s, caused by a global financial crisis and deepened by a collapse of world tradeWorld real GDP growth is expected to fall by 2.75 percent this year, and to recover by 1.25 percent next year (2010)." A sharp fall in international trade will also drag down export-reliant economies like Germany and Japan. [Klaus Schmidt-Hibbel, OECD Chief Economist]: "We have the historical data of world trade, with a massive decline in the last quarter of 2008 and a similar decline in the first quarter of 2009, estimated until March 31. And we estimate for the entire year, a decline by 13 percent of world trade for this year." The economic crisis will affect the unemployment rate even more next year, according to the report. [Klaus Schmidt-Hibbel, OECD Chief Economist]: "Joblessness in all OECD countries will rise very sharply, with the rate of unemployment peaking in 2010 or early 2011, so peaking maybe 1 ½ to 2 years down the road, and in a majority of countries ...

Angel Gurría: The OECD & G20
About this Event 04 Nov 2009 @ 8:30 The OECD and the G20 An Evolving Relationship About the Speech: At this breakfast presentation at the IIEA, Angel Gurría discussed the evolving relationship between the OECD and the G20 and the implications, both for his organisation and for the global economic system, of decisions taken at the G20's Pittsburgh Summit in September 2009. Secretary General Gurría noted that the G20 is fast becoming the centrepiece of todays international economic, social and environmental governance architecture. He also described how the OECD has been supporting the forum since its inception, listing recent substantive contributions including work on new sources of growth; the human and social dimension of the economic crisis; innovation; open markets for trade and investment; the removal of energy subsidies; anti-bribery and the exchange of information for tax purposes. In addition, he told his audience that the OECD has made several concrete proposals to the G20 relating to the Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced Growth unveiled at the Pittsburgh Summit. One such proposal is the establishment of an Observatory for Policy Coherence that would ensure that key international organisations provide the best possible joint input to G20 processes. As the G20 nears its ten year anniversary in December 2009 and the OECD approaches its fiftieth anniversary in 2011, this was an excellent opportunity to hear from Mr Gurría how the system of global ...
