THE STORY: In 1981, AAU, NCAA, Olympic and ICW professional wrestler Bob Roop offered $1000 to anyone who could escape the inescapable "Sugar Hold". On June 3rd, 1981 in Frankfort Kentucky, a 19 year old, 155 pound, 5'7" martial artist managed to break the hold and then spent the rest of the night fighting to collect the prize.
This video excerpt from "Shooting With The Legends: Shoot # 5 Bob Roop" provided courtesy of Scott Teal and Crowbar Press is very special to me because I was the one who managed to beat the "Sugar Hold Challenge". My name is Bill and I am pleased to share this with you. This was no gimmick, nor was it staged. This was as real as it gets.
Here you will hear the story from Bob Roop himself. How Angelo Poffo "The Miser" (and father of Lanny "Leaping Lanny" and Randy "Randy Savage" Poffo) the head of the ICW Wrestling Organization tried to deal with the chaos that night ultimately involving "Cowboy" Bob Orton and Ronnie Garvin. You will also hear Bob's behind the scene insights regarding why wrestling organizations ran promotions like this.
There is one correction I would like to make regarding the story from Bob's perspective. When he speaks of "a cop who was an uncle for the kid". Actually, this referred to the late Sheriff Sam Harrod of Frankfort who was no relation to me or my family but did convince Angelo that it would be in his best interest to make good on the payment.
On a personal note, I want to thank Mr. Roop for the opportunity to compete against him and looking out for my best interest when I offered to do the challenge again, but seeing that I had ruptured a blood vessel in my left eye he would not allow it. Also for the great chats we exchanged some years ago about the "challenge" and other things going on in our lives.

Bob Roop
Robert Michael "Bob" Roop (born July 22, 1947) is a retired amateur and professional wrestler, whose career as a wrestler spanned high school, college, the United States Army, amateur and professional wrestling. He was an American heavyweight Greco-Roman wrestler at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
Amateur career
Robert Roop began wrestling in the eighth grade in East Lansing, Michigan. In High School, Roop was varsity heavyweight as a freshman, with an inauspicious 0-22-1 record. With the guidance of coach Joe Dibello, his record improved in ensuing years, with a 27-0-0 record his senior year, in which he also took State Championship.
He entered Michigan State University on a football scholarship. After a year and a half, he left school to join the Army. He received paratrooper training, and signed on to become a Special Forces medic. He competed on the All-Army wrestling team and, later, the All-Services wrestling team. There was one other heavyweight on the All-Services team, Jim Rasher, who had won a bronze medal as the U.S. Greco-Roman Heavyweight at the World Games prior to entering the Army. Rasher was influential in Roop's decision to pursue an amateur wrestling.
