Sūrat al-Muzzammil (Arabic: سورة المزمل‎) (The Enshrouded One, Bundled Up) is the 73rd sura of the Qur'an with 20 ayat.

بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ

1. یٰۤاَیُّہَا الۡمُزَّمِّلُ

1. قُمِ الَّیۡلَ اِلَّا قَلِیۡلًا

1. نِّصۡفَہٗۤ اَوِ انۡقُصۡ مِنۡہُ قَلِیۡلًا

1. اَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَیۡہِ وَ رَتِّلِ الۡقُرۡاٰنَ تَرۡتِیۡلًا

1. اِنَّا سَنُلۡقِیۡ عَلَیۡکَ قَوۡلًا ثَقِیۡلًا

1. اِنَّ نَاشِئَۃَ الَّیۡلِ ہِیَ اَشَدُّ وَطۡاً وَّ اَقۡوَمُ قِیۡلًا

1. اِنَّ لَکَ فِی النَّہَارِ سَبۡحًا طَوِیۡلًا

1. وَ اذۡکُرِ اسۡمَ رَبِّکَ وَ تَبَتَّلۡ اِلَیۡہِ تَبۡتِیۡلًا

1. رَبُّ الۡمَشۡرِقِ وَ الۡمَغۡرِبِ لَاۤ اِلٰہَ اِلَّا ہُوَ فَاتَّخِذۡہُ وَکِیۡلًا

1. وَ اصۡبِرۡ عَلٰی مَا یَقُوۡلُوۡنَ وَ اہۡجُرۡہُمۡ ہَجۡرًا جَمِیۡلًا

1. وَ ذَرۡنِیۡ وَ الۡمُکَذِّبِیۡنَ اُولِی النَّعۡمَۃِ وَ مَہِّلۡہُمۡ قَلِیۡلًا

1. اِنَّ لَدَیۡنَاۤ اَنۡکَالًا وَّ جَحِیۡمًا

1. وَّ طَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّۃٍ وَّ عَذَابًا اَلِیۡمًا

1. یَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ الۡاَرۡضُ وَ الۡجِبَالُ وَ کَانَتِ الۡجِبَالُ کَثِیۡبًا مَّہِیۡلًا

1. اِنَّاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ اِلَیۡکُمۡ رَسُوۡلًا ۬ۙ شَاہِدًا عَلَیۡکُمۡ کَمَاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ اِلٰی فِرۡعَوۡنَ رَسُوۡلًا

1. فَعَصٰی فِرۡعَوۡنُ الرَّسُوۡلَ فَاَخَذۡنٰہُ اَخۡذًا وَّبِیۡلًا

1. فَکَیۡفَ تَتَّقُوۡنَ اِنۡ کَفَرۡتُمۡ یَوۡمًا یَّجۡعَلُ الۡوِلۡدَانَ شِیۡبَۨا

1. السَّمَآءُ مُنۡفَطِرٌۢ بِہٖ ؕ کَانَ وَعۡدُہٗ مَفۡعُوۡلًا

1. اِنَّ ہٰذِہٖ تَذۡکِرَۃٌ ۚ فَمَنۡ شَآءَ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰی رَبِّہٖ سَبِیۡلًا

1. اِنَّ رَبَّکَ یَعۡلَمُ اَنَّکَ تَقُوۡمُ اَدۡنٰی مِنۡ ثُلُثَیِ الَّیۡلِ وَ نِصۡفَہٗ وَ ثُلُثَہٗ وَ طَآئِفَۃٌ مِّنَ

الَّذِیۡنَ مَعَکَ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ یُقَدِّرُ الَّیۡلَ وَ النَّہَارَ ؕ عَلِمَ اَنۡ لَّنۡ تُحۡصُوۡہُ فَتَابَ عَلَیۡکُمۡ

فَاقۡرَءُوۡا مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنَ الۡقُرۡاٰنِ ؕ عَلِمَ اَنۡ سَیَکُوۡنُ مِنۡکُمۡ مَّرۡضٰی ۙ وَ اٰخَرُوۡنَ

یَضۡرِبُوۡنَ فِی الۡاَرۡضِ یَبۡتَغُوۡنَ مِنۡ فَضۡلِ اللّٰہِ ۙ وَ اٰخَرُوۡنَ یُقَاتِلُوۡنَ فِیۡ سَبِیۡلِ اللّٰہِ

فَاقۡرَءُوۡا مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنۡہُ ۙ وَ اَقِیۡمُوا الصَّلٰوۃَ وَ اٰتُوا الزَّکٰوۃَ وَ اَقۡرِضُوا اللّٰہَ قَرۡضًا

حَسَنًا ؕ وَ مَا تُقَدِّمُوۡا لِاَنۡفُسِکُمۡ مِّنۡ خَیۡرٍ تَجِدُوۡہُ عِنۡدَ اللّٰہِ ہُوَ خَیۡرًا وَّ اَعۡظَمَ اَجۡرًا ؕ وَ

اسۡتَغۡفِرُوا اللّٰہَ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِیۡمٌ

English Translation by Muhammad Shameem, Mohammad Wali Raazi and Muhammad Taqi Usmani:^[1]

O you wrapped up in clothes, [1] stand at night (for prayer) except a little [2] half of it, or make it a little less, [3] or make it a little more; and recite the Qur'an clearly with tartil (in a distinct and measured tone). [4] We are going to send down to you a weighty discourse. [5] Truly, rising by night (for prayer of tahajjud) is the most effective way to subdue (one's self) and to make speech more upright. [6] Surely, in daytime, you have a lengthy work to do. [7] And remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. [8] He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for (your) Guardian. [9] And bear patiently what they say, and part with them in a beautiful manner. [10] And leave Me (to deal) with the deniers, the people of luxury, and give them respite for a while. [11] Surely with Us are fetters and flaming fire, [12] and food that chokes, and a painful punishment, [13] on the Day when the earth and the mountains will quake, and the mountains will turn into a slipping heap of sand. [14] We have sent to you a messenger, as a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Fir'aun (the Pharaoh). [15] Then, Fir'aun disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a severe seizure. [16] So, if you disbelieve, how will you save yourself from a day that will turn the small boys into grey-headed old men, [17] whereby the sky will burst apart. His promise has to be fulfilled. [18] Indeed, this is a reminder; so let anyone who so wishes, adopt a way to his Lord. [19] Your Lord knows that you stand (in prayer) for nearly two thirds of the night, and (at times) for half of it, and (at times) for one third of it, and (so do) a group of those who are with you. And Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you cannot do it regularly, therefore He turned to you in mercy. Now, recite as much of the Qur'an as is easy (for you). He knows that some of you may be sick, and others travelling in the land, seeking the grace of Allah, and yet others fighting in Allah's way. Therefore, recite as much of it as is easy. And establish salah and pay zakah, and advance to Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you will send ahead for your own selves, you will find it with Allah much better in condition, and much greater in reward. And seek forgiveness from Allah. Indeed Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful. [20]

English Translation by Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall:^[2][3]

O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! [1] Keep vigil the night long, save a little [2] A half thereof, or abate a little thereof [3] Or add (a little) thereto and chant the Qur'an in measure, [4] For We shall charge thee with a word of weight. [5] Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain. [6] Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. [7] So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion [8] Lord of the East and the West; there is no God save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender [9] And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave taking. [10] Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. [11] Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, [12] And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom [13] On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. [14] Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. [15] But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We sealed him with no gentle grip. [16] Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, [17] The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. [18] Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. [19] Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor due and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you far your souls, ye will surely find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. [20]

English Translation by Yusuf Ali:^[4][5]

O thou folded in garments! [1] Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- [2] Half of it,- or a little less, [3] Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. [4] Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. [5] Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). [6] True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: [7] But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly. [8] (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. [9] And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity). [10] And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while. [11] With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them), [12] And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. [13] One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. [14] We have sent to you, (O men!) an apostle, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent an apostle to Pharaoh. [15] But Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. [16] Then how shall ye, if ye deny ((Allah)), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?- [17] Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. [18] Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord! [19] Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy): read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah’s bounty; yet others fighting in Allah’s Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur'an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah’s Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah. for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [20]

Abdul Rahman Ibn Abdul Aziz as-Sudais (Arabic: عبد الرحمن السديس (ʻAbd ar-Rahman ibn ʻAbd al-Aziz as-Sudais), born Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1960)^[1] is the imam of the Grand mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and the "Islamic Personality Of the Year" 2005. He is known world wide primarily for his characteristic voice and for his emotional recitation of the Quran in accordance with Tajweed.^{[2][unreliable source?]} He has also called for peaceful inter-faith dialogue.^[3]

In some of his sermons, al-Sudais has vilified non-Muslims and has called for the annihilation of Jews.^[4][5] However the Muslim Council of Britain, responding to some of these accusations, has declared them as being a "witch-hunt" and "deliberately garbled".^[6]

Al-Sudais has called for efforts to combat terrorism,^[7] discussed ways to combat terrorism,^[8] and has preached Islam's opposition to "explosions and terrorism".^[9] He actively speaks out against what he believes to be the persecution of Palestinians by Israeli settlers and the state of Israel,^[10] and has pleaded for medical supplies and food to be sent to the people of Palestine.^[11]

Life[link]

Al-Sudais comes from the Anza clan, and he had memorized the Quran by the age of 12.^[1] Growing up in Najd, Al-Sudais studied at the Al Muthana Bin Harith Elementary School, and afterwards the Riyadh Scientific Institution from which he graduated in 1979 with a grade of excellent.^[1] He obtained a degree in Sharia from Riyadh University in 1983, his Master's in Islamic fundamentals from the Sharia College of Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in 1987 and received his Ph.D. in Islamic Sharia from Umm al-Qura University in 1995 while working there as an assistant professor after serving at Riyadh University.^[1]

Career[link]

He started his Imamate in Mecca on the 23rd of May 1984 where he lead the Asr prayer, and his first Khutba to the people was on the 15th of Ramadan that year.^{[12][unreliable source?]} He was honoured to lead funeral prayer for Sheikh Ali Jaber in 2005, a previous Imam of the Grand Mosque whose style of recitation of the Quran had great influence on Sheikh Al-Sudais' own. He is of Hanbali jurisprudence in accordance with the majority of the Arabian Peninsula. He is also known for his sermons calling on believers to help other Muslims in war-torn regions.^[11]

In 2005, Al-Sudais was named by the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) Organising Committee as its 9th annual "Islamic Personality Of the Year" in recognition of his devotion to the Quran and Islam.^[1] When accepting his award in Dubai, he said: "The message of Islam and Muslims is modesty, fairness, security, stability, sympathy, harmony and kindness."^[13]

Statements on conflict resolution[link]

In 2003, Sudais stated that he believes that youth need to be taught Islamic law, including the precepts of the prohibition on killing oneself and the prohibition against attacking non-Muslims living in Islamic countries. Sudais has also said that Islamic youth should not "indiscriminately hurl the label of atheism and not to confuse between legitimate jihad and…the terrorizing of peaceable people."^[14]

Sudais has said that there is no room for extremism and sectarianism in Islam and that Islam teaches a moderate path. He said the solution to problems that Muslims face in Palestine, Somalia, Iraq, Kashmir and Afghanistan lies in following the teachings of Islam in letter and spirit. He called for resolution of conflicts through dialogue and negotiations taking into consideration the social and economic benefits that can be achieved by resolving these disputes.^[15]

Sudais also criticized the Lal Masjid administration during the 2007 Red Mosque crisis in Islamabad, Pakistan. He urged the militants and the government to agree to a peaceful resolution through dialogue and urged both parties to protect peace.^[16]

Prayers for inter-faith peace[link]

In June, 2004, Sudais led a following of 10,000 in prayers for inter-faith peace and harmony. Racial Equality Minister Fiona Mactaggart attended Sudais' sermon at the East London Mosque. Prince Charles, who was in Washington, took part by a pre-recorded message^[3] Britain’s chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, sent a message of support.^[17]

Controversial statements on Jews[link]

Al-Sudais has been decried as an antisemite for publicly praying to God to ‘terminate’ the Jews,^[18] and as a result has been barred from conferences in the United States,^[18] and been refused entry to Canada.^[19]

On April 19, 2002, in his sermon Al-Aqsa Is Crying Out For Help! Al-Sudais called the Jews "monkeys and pigs", among other invective.^[20]

Al-Sudais has been listed as an example of theological anti-Semitism by the Anti-Defamation League, when he called curses down upon Jews and labeled them “scum of the earth” in his sermons.^[21]

The International Broadcasting Bureau also has reported Sudais's antisemitism in a statement dated April 2002.^[22]

In a May 2003 interview with NBC's Tim Russert, the foreign policy adviser to the Saudi crown prince, Adel al-Jubeir, confirmed al-Sudais's statements, agreed that they were “clearly not right”, and stated that he was reprimanded, but was still allowed to preach. He also said that "if he [Sudais] had a choice he would retract these words - he would not have said these words." ^[23]

Al-Sudais not only attacked Jews, but other non-Muslims as well, such as Hindus and Christians. John Ware on the BBC program Panorama entitled "A Question of Leadership" from August 21, 2005, cited Al-Sudais referring disparagingly to Christians as “cross-worshippers” and Hindus as “idol worshippers”.^[4] Ware pointed out the discrepancy between Sudais's sermons to Saudis with his speech to Western audiences.^[4]

The Muslim Council of Britain questioned the veracity of quotes given in the interview, calling them “deliberately garbled” and the program as a whole “deeply unfair”.^[24] The Council urged caution, and while condemning any form of anti-semitic remarks, requested verification that these words were indeed spoken by Al-Sudais.^[25]

After a series of exchanges, the BBC's Panorama editor, Mike Robinson, posted a response to each of the Muslim Council's allegations, accusing them of “unwarranted and wildly inaccurate attacks” and “bad faith allegations”.^[26]
