FHWA Mini-Roundabouts Informational Video
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has sponsored a research project, entitled "Field Testing, Marketing, and Crash Analyses for Mini-Roundabouts," Contract No. DTFH61-09-C-00027. We are actively recruiting willing agencies to identify suitable sites and implement this low cost treatment for evaluation. Compared to a conventional roundabout, the mini-roundabout features a much smaller inscribed diameter, on the order of 50 to 80 ft, and a relatively small circular central island (eg, 16 ft to 45 ft diameter) that is traversable. It is suitable for urban and suburban intersections of 2-lane roads with low truck volume and lower speed, and can handle traffic up to 1600 vph (all approaches combined). Mini-roundabouts are designed to fit within existing travelway boundaries. A detailed marketing video and brochure on mini-roundabouts are available for download and can be freely distributed to interested agencies. The FHWA contract provides resource to conduct comprehensive evaluation of the following safety and operational effectiveness of mini-roundabouts: actual approach and circulating vehicular speeds, traffic operations, driver behavior, vehicle-vehicle conflicts, pedestrian and bicyclist accommodation, and before/after crash analyses. We expect to work closely with participating agencies to provide technical support related to the implementation of mini-roundabouts. If you are interested in participating in this study, need additional information, or desire a ...

Cable Guardrails
Cable Guardrails - Federal Highway Administration - Video VH-2C - Cable guardrail systems are snowdrift-resistant, more aesthetic than solid-beam systems, and relatively low-cost. This video presents a potpourri of recent research and variations on the basic G1 guardrail. Flanged-channel posts, transitions between cable and w-beam barriers, wooden posts, modified terminal anchors, and low-cost installations for low volume roads are shown onsite and in crash tests.

Freetown has a Roundabout... Now what do we do?
An informational video on the new Roundabout at the intersection of County Road, Chase Road and Mason Road in Freetown, MA. The roundabout was designed, engineered, and constructed by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division District 5. Funding for construction of the roundabout was provided by MassDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This intersection is known as Veterans Square. A memorial honoring local veterans who served in the armed forces and were killed in action during WWII is dedicated there. The roundabout itself will be dedicated to Navy Petty Officer Second Class Tyler J. Trahan of Freetown who made the ultimate sacrifice serving our country in Iraq. Tyler grew up near this intersection and his parents have been advocating for safety improvements for several years.

Rare Spider Shuts Down Huge Construction Project
By: Christina ColemanA rare spider called the Braken Bat Cave Meshweaver was found at a construction site near Highway 151 and Wiseman Road. The 15.1 million dollar project will be put on hold until the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Federal Highway Administration considers ways to possibly continue the project without disrupting the spiders potential habitat. The Texas Department of Transportation had biologists on site since it was determined that the area has lots of cracks that would possibly have a variety of organisms in them. Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Josh Donat says the project became subject to the Endangered Species Act once the rare spider was discovered, "This is the second individual spider that's ever been found. It's not like we found 1 of 5000 individuals in a species. This is the second time this species has ever been seen by human eyes. The last time it was seen was 32 years ago in 1980 in a little piece of property not far from here."The discovery could stop the project all together. Several residents who live in the North San Antonio Hills neighborhood say they're frustrated with the situation. John Mellow has lived in the neighborhood for two years now. He says his neighborhood is busy with traffic without the project complete, "This will stop all the traffic and I don't have to stand out in the front of my house every morning with my kids and make sure they don't get run over before they catch the bus.Officials are not sure ...

BPA Report demands that the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program be improved.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in their December 2011 symposium in Washington DC finally acknowledged the failure of black contractors to participate in the federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program. Colette Holt, a prominent legal authority participating on a panel discussing the merits of the program, finally expresses the tragic irony. Blacks are participating less than any other minority group in a program that was designed to remedy the effects of slavery, and sponsored by a black congressman named Parren Mitchell. The good news is that Ms. Holt convinced the FHWA and other USDOT officials to convene a taskforce to address this issue. However, the taskforce has not been formed and we at BPA Report are asking everyone who views this video to contact Darren Brown, Warren Whitlock and Camille Hazeur all black administrators, and ask why the taskforce has not been convened and when do they expect it to be convened. Darren Brown is the first point of contact and his number is 202-366-8031, Darren.Brown@dot.gov Contact BPA Report for more information at www.BPAreport.com

SH 82 Grand Ave Traffic Simulations Alternative 3A
The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration have initiated an Environmental Assessment process to address functional, structural, and safety deficiencies of the SH 82 Grand Avenue Bridge in Glenwood Springs and to bring it up to current standards for a four-lane bridge. Traffic simulations were shown at the August 22, 2012, Public Open House to help illustrate what drivers and pedestrians would experience under each of the alternative configurations. The traffic simulations show an approximate 2030 traffic volume level. Alternative 3-A would be a new four-lane bridge for SH 82 that touches down near I-70 Exit 116. It would have a local access /6th Street traffic signal near Exit 116 and a single-lane roundabout for local traffic at 6th and Laurel.
