Alex Clare (born in 1986) is a British singer-songwriter from London, England. His debut album, ''The Lateness of the Hour'', was released in the UK on 11 July 2011 on Island Records and was produced by Switch and Diplo.

Early life

Born in 1986 in London, Alex Clare grew up listening to his father’s jazz records, was drawn to blues and soul (Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder), and eventually drum and bass and UK garage. Though Clare took up the trumpet and drums as a youngster, he eventually placed an emphasis on guitar and songwriting, playing open mike nights with original material.

Music career

A demo earned him a deal with the Island label in the UK. His debut album, ''The Lateness of the Hour'', produced by Diplo and Switch was released in July 2011. The first single from the album was "Up All Night," followed by "Too Close" and "Treading Water."

On 19 May 2011, Reggie Yates made Alex Clare's cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry" his "song of the day". A day later, the Dutch radio station 3FM announced single "Too Close" to be the '3FM's Megahit of that week.

On 21 June 2011, Clare performed at the Queens' College, Cambridge May Ball. On 14 August 2011, Clare performed at the Summer Well festival in Buftea, Romania.

Following the disappointing performance of the album, Clare was dropped from his record contract with Universal Island in the UK.

In late 2011, interest in Clare increased when his single "Up All Night" appeared on the store playlist for Jack Wills.

In 2012, Clare's song "Too Close" was featured in an Internet Explorer 9 commercial. Following its use in the commercial, the song debuted at #68 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and #37 on the UK Singles Chart. Clare saw success on the German charts too, topping the charts at number one. On April 29th Clare's song peaked at #6 on the UK Singles Chart.

Personal life

Before gaining critical success, Clare dated singer Amy Winehouse for a year. They met while he performed and worked at a bar she frequented, The Hawley Arms in Camden, North London.

Clare Bowditch (born 1975) is an Australian musician from Melbourne, Victoria. She released her fourth album ''Modern Day Addiction'' via Island Records on 13 August 2010. It became both 3RRR Album of the Week and ABC Radio National's Album of the Week. MDA is the first of Bowditch's album's to enter the Top Ten. Bowditch recently supported Leonard Cohen on his 2010 Australian tour.

In 2008, Clare won the Best Female Artist award at the 2006 ARIAs, and was runner up in the International Songwriting Competition (2008) in the singer/songwriter category for her song Peccadilloes. The same year, she was voted Yen Magazine's "Young Woman of the Year" (Music).

She is best known as a heart-felt songwriter, for her satirical on-stage antics, and for the ''Open Letters'' section on her website in which she chronicled her early career as it happened. Most recently, she has been approached to take on several roles as a "social commentator": she wrote an article for ABC's The Drum entitled "Mr Jones and Me", and also made her debut on the ABC's ''Q&A;'' as the first panelist to also perform a song ("Bigger Than the Money"). In August 2010, she spent an hour interviewing PM Julia Gillard for MySpace Today.

She also occasionally writes articles for Rolling Stone, ABC's The Drum, and hosts summer radio shows on the ABC.

Biography

Bowditch began writing songs early. She graduated from Melbourne University's School of Creative Arts with a BCA - a now defunct degree at the prestigious University. She continued writing in private until 1998 when she met John Hedigan, forming their first band, Red Raku. Marty Brown, today Clare's husband, produced their first EP. Bowditch and Brown had their first daughter, Asha, in 2004, around the same time Bowditch received her first recording grant from Art's Victoria's Music for the Future program. ''Autumn Bone'' was recorded in the front room of their house in Melbourne, with Libby Chow and Warren Bloomer. The Feeding Set was a name Libby coined as a joke referring to the meals Bowditch cooked for them every Wednesday night after rehearsal.

Having performed on the Melbourne pub circuit since she was seventeen years old, first with Quarter Acre Dream and then with Red Raku (they recorded two albums), Bowditch first came to prominence in 2005 with the release of her second album ''What Was Left'', which received excellent critical reviews, and high rotation airplay on national radio stations such as Triple J, although her success can be largely credited to the strong support of local independent radio stations throughout Australia, who championed her early work. She won the Best Female Artist award at the 2006 ARIAs, and was runner up in the International Songwriting Competition (2008) in the singer/songwriter category for her song Peccadilloes. She is currently Yen Magazine's "Young Woman of the Year" (Music).

Bowditch and her partner and drummer Marty Brown, have been touring continuously in Australia and more recently in Europe since 2003. Much of this touring Bowditch has been accompanied by her band The Feeding Set, who are on hiatus for Bowditch's current album. On stage, Bowditch is known best for the beauty of her songs but also for her satirical on-stage humour, and unconventional use of everyday objects (tea-pots, bottles, old casiotone) for sound-effects.

In 2005, Bowditch was invited by Deborah Conway to take part in the Broad Festival project, with three other Australian female artists, they performed their own and each other's songs. With Bowditch and Conway were Sara Storer, Katie Noonan and Ruby Hunter. In October, Bowditch and the Feeding Set licensed their second album, ''What Was Left'' to EMI. The album was publicly and critically recognised, with two songs being included in Triple J's Hottest 100.

In late 2006, Bowditch gave birth to identical twin boys, Oscar and Eli.

Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set released their third album, ''The Moon Looked On'', on 13 October 2007.

An update on her official website, dated 23 April 2008, announced that she was planning a temporary move to Berlin, Germany, for 3 months to follow up on opportunities to release her albums in Europe. This move was precipitated by a sold out twenty-five date experimental solo tour through major and regional venues in Australia, where she was supported by Australian band Hot Little Hands, whose founding member is Tim Harvey of Feeding Set fame.

Clare Bowditch and her band The New Slang have now completed the recording of their fourth album, ''Modern Day Addiction''.

The album was party recorded with producer Mocky (Feist, Gonzales, Jamie Lidell, Peaches) at the legendary Hansa studios in Berlin. This album marks a decided change in direction for Bowditch, having been written on casio and piano. In October 2009 she released her first single, "The Start of War", from ''Modern Day Addiction''. The song was co-produced by Bowditch, her partner Marty Brown and the legendary Mick Harvey (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds).

Bowditch recently signed a licensing agreement with Island Records Australia, after three years with EMI.

On 31 May 2010 Clare appeared on the ABC television program ''Q&A;''. She provided her view on many political issues within Australia. At the conclusion of the program, Tony Jones invited Clare and her "Lady Garden" to make Q and A history and perform their song ''Bigger Than The Money''.

Clare Bowditch appeared at the SXSW Festival between March 16 to 20, 2011.

Clare Rita Mary Maguire (born 15 September 1987) is a British singer-songwriter. She was signed to Universal Music Group Polydor Records in 2008. She was rated in fifth place in the BBC Sound of 2011 list of the top 15 most promising new artists. Maguire was also singled out as one of MTV's Brand New: For 2011 Acts. Her voice has been compared to Stevie Nicks and Annie Lennox.

Maguire's debut album, ''Light After Dark'', was released on 28 February 2011.

Career beginnings

When she was 17, Maguire began travelling regularly to London to establish music contacts and also began posting demo songs on MySpace. One of these tracks, ''Strangest Thing'', recorded with Joe Flory (Primary 1) approached 500,000 plays, leading to interest from a number of major recording companies. Maguire was also invited to Jay-Z's restaurant to meet the American rapper and millionaire businessman and other well established recording artists, including Jarvis Cocker, who was impressed and offered her one of his songs. Maguire signed a recording contract with Polydor Records in 2008 and then worked on her debut album ''Light After Dark'' with producer Fraser T. Smith, who has previously worked with Kylie and Adele.

History

2009–2011: ''Light After Dark''

Maguire began a European concert tour in October 2010 supporting Plan B and Hurts. She has also written a song with fellow Birmingham rap artist Mike Skinner entitled ''Lock the Locks'' which will feature on his last Streets album, ''Computers and Blues''. Maguire also features on the track ''Midnight Caller'' which appears on Drum and Bass-duo Chase & Status' second studio album, ''No More Idols''.

Maguire released her debut single ''Ain't Nobody'' in the United Kingdom on 18 October 2010 through Polydor Records, where it debuted at number 78 on the UK Singles Chart. A remix of the song was used in Renault's 2011 Clio commercial entitled "What is Va Va Voom?". Maguire's song ''You're Electric'' was selected as the iTunes single of the week and was available for a free digital download from 28 December until 3 January 2011. The song also appears on ''Light After Dark'', but was released as part of an iTunes-exclusive EP entitled ''Let's Begin''. In March 2011, Maguire began supporting The Script in their UK tour.

On 31 December 2010, the song ''Lucky'' appeared as another free promotional download on Amazon. She then released her second official single, ''The Last Dance''. The single was said to have been written by Maguire the day after the death of music legend Michael Jackson in response to a series of unjustified comments. The official video that accompanied the single was first premiered by ''The Sun'' on 7 January 2011 and was directed by AlexandLiane. The song was 4Music and TheBox's 'VIP Track of the week' and was also 'Record Of The Week' for BBC Radio 1 DJs Fearne Cotton and Dev. BBC Radio 1 added the song to the B-List on its playlist.

''Light After Dark'' went in at Number 7 in the official UK top 100 album chart (refer to previous link). The album was released on the 20th February 2011. The last single to be released off the album was 'The Shield & The Sword'. It peaked at #91 on the UK Music charts.

2011-present: ''Second Studio Album''

During 2011, Maguire has been working with various songwriters and producers for the second album. During her debut headline tour, she premiered new song titled 'Mess You Around'. She has also premiered 2 new songs during festivals over the summer of 2011, titled 'A Change In Me' and 'Lights Out'. Maguire has described the second album as more of a "bluesy/soul record" with influences from Johnny Cash among others.

She features on Welsh DJ, High Contrast's song 'Almost Human' taken from his upcoming album. It is a different direction for Maguire, portraying a more drum and bass sound.

In an interview in March 2012, Maguire said of the new album, "With this album I’ve taken a lot of inspiration through my own experiences and people I’ve met. It’s edgy and raw which suits my voice. It’s honest and quite funny as well. There wasn’t any humour in my first record and that annoyed me because I like to be around people who make me laugh. In terms of genre, I guess it comes under soul." It was also stated in this interview that the album is set for release in January 2013.

Personal life

Born in Solihull, on 15 September 1987, Maguire comes from a large musical Irish family, the middle child of three born to Caroline (née Deehan) and Francis Maguire Sr. and started singing and writing music from the age of 7. She went to school at the independent all-girls school, Saint Martin's. She includes among her significant influences Johnny Cash, Prince, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the pioneering 1940s gospel singer, songwriter and recording artist who popularised mixing spiritual lyrics with rock and roll accompaniment.

Edward "Ed" Westwick (born 27 June 1987) is an English actor and musician who is best known for his role as Chuck Bass on the CW television drama ''Gossip Girl''.

Early life and career

Westwick was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, the son of Carole, an educational psychologist, and Peter Westwick, a university lecturer. He grew up in Stevenage and trained at the National Youth Theatre in London. He is a Chelsea F.C. supporter. His early career began with appearances on the British television series ''Doctors'' as Holden, ''Casualty'' as Johnny Cullin and ''Afterlife'' as Darren. His film credits include ''Breaking and Entering'', ''Children of Men'' and ''Son of Rambow''.

In 2007, he was cast in The CW's teen drama series ''Gossip Girl'' as Chuck Bass. As a result of the show's success, he was named one of 2008's Sexiest Men Alive by ''People'' magazine, appeared the following year on its "100 Most Beautiful" list with the whole cast of ''Gossip Girl'', earned two awards in 2008 and 2009 for Best TV Villain at the Teen Choice Awards, and was named Breakthrough Talent by ''GQ'' in 2010. ''Entertainment Weekly'' also named Westwick's character Chuck Bass number one in their "Best Dressed TV characters of 2008" list (tied with Leighton Meester's character Blair Waldorf), as well as in their "Best Performances" list alongside co-star Meester.

In 2008, Westwick became the new face of K-Swiss, making him the second member of the ''Gossip Girl'' cast to endorse sportswear (Leighton Meester endorsed Reebok) and appeared in the horror film ''100 Feet''.

In 2009, Westwick played a role in the sequel to ''Donnie Darko'' and also guest starred in the third season of the Showtime original series ''Californication'' as a student who was fascinated with vampire literature. In May 2009, he was attached to play Heathcliff in ''Wuthering Heights''. However, in January 2010 the project passed into the hands of a new director which caused a change in the cast.

In January 2011, Westwick joined Clint Eastwood's film ''J. Edgar'', a biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio about J. Edgar Hoover, the controversial first director of the FBI. That same year, he appeared in the romantic comedy ''Chalet Girl'' alongside Felicity Jones.

He co-narrated the audio book version of ''City of Fallen Angels'' by Cassandra Clare and also narrated Clare's second novel ''Clockwork Prince'' from The Infernal Devices series.

Westwick also became an international celebrity endorser for Penshoppe, a local clothing brand in the Philippines, in mid-2011.

He is set to star in a new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet as Juliet's cousin Tybalt alongside Hailee Steinfeld.

Personal life

Westwick began dating his ''Gossip Girl'' co-star Jessica Szohr in late 2008. They split in May 2010, with Westwick saying "girlfriends are too much of a headache", but briefly reunited whilst filming season 4 of ''Gossip Girl'' in August 2010. In February 2012, it was reported Westwick and Szhor had rekindled their relationship.

Besides acting, Westwick fronted the British indie rock band The Filthy Youth, composed of himself, Benjamin Lewis Allingham, Jimmy Wright, Tom Bastiani and John Vooght. While he is now inactive in the band, largely because he wants to focus on his acting career and the other band members are still based in the U.K., he has expressed an interest in forming another group in New York.
