Kelowna British Columbia - Canada
Kelowna British Columbia - Canada
Unsustainable growth and development, Kelowna British Columbia - Canada. Having an economy based on public service jobs, tourism and travel, seniors and retirement is not a sustainable economy. In the USA tourist, holiday and retirement destinations are suffering more then other areas. Florida built a booming economy on seniors retiring to the sun destination, and vacationers flocked to the shores, even agriculture came under attack as developers grabbed the properties for houses, shopping centers and golf courses. It all went bust. Kelowna is very expensive for young people and many of the jobs are service sector jobs which do not pay well so there has been an exodus of youth to - Alberta or even Vancouver. When will the bubble burst ? Music by Williamson 09 - and then its all gone

Kelowna Real Estate Forclosures - Okanagan Bubble Burst - YouTube
Kelowna Real Estate Forclosures - Okanagan Bubble Burst - YouTube
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to have seen this coming, real estate prices can't keep going on up and up, but this is not a simple correction. Other economic conditions are at play, such as home owner demographics, aged seniors and lack of industry for employing young people with a good wage. One more thing to consider is that many homes owned by seniors are large and will be expensive to maintain with the fast rise in utilities so that will also be astrike against them in the resale market, not that there are too many young people looking to take on a 1/2 million dollar mortgage as the prices start to fall.. "Realtor is worried the number of foreclosures will bring the overall market down, hurting anyone who wants to sell their home; now up against something they didn't see coming." - give me a break, didn't see it coming...duh. It doesn't matter that 70%, or 80%, of owners may be very happy with their homes, and sitting tight: it only takes about 5%-7% of owners with an eager desire to sell to crash a market. Meaning that if you live in an area of homes with an average value of $500000 and now the homes on the market are $3 - 350000, even if you don't have to sell your worth has taken a sizable hit, and if there's no end in sight with prices sliding , people will get nervous. That will be more true as other provinces are hit by a contracting economy and government cuts come in from new federal and provincial budgets.

Kelowna slammed for being unsustainable
Kelowna slammed for being unsustainable
For 3 year my videos have been expressing the same sentiment about Kelowna. Growth and development at the expense of the quality of life is not sustainable. An economy based on retirees and tourism is not sustainable (see Florida). Global News Winnipeg... Kelowna is one of the most unsustainable cities in the province as well as in Canada. Former NDP premier Mike Harcourt was the keynote speaker at the BC Studies Conference at UBC Okanagan Thursday night. He says one important element to avoid is urban sprawl, which means more high-rise buildings should be constructed. Harcourt says many people waste space in their houses, waste using their vehicles and waste electricity. Kelowna is guilty of being unsustainable and adds unsustainable cities result in low quality of life for their residents and are not competitive with other communities in attracting jobs and talented workers.

Kelowna Shootings at the Delta Grand
Kelowna Shootings at the Delta Grand
If there is a perception out there that somehow Canada is void of criminal activity or violent crime, that is far from the truth. In my opinion based on the population of around 35 million, a daily accounting of criminal activity from property crime to murders would surprise not only foreigners but even Canadians. And it's not getting better, kids are killing kids, drugs and gangs fight in big cities, recently Edmonton was in the news for murders, Vancouver, Nanimo, Prince George in BC, Winnipeg Man., Toronto and parts of Ontario and organized crime in Quebec and Montreal, we have an epidemic. Still much of the focus by police is on what's visible, in Kelowna that means getting drug dealers and hookers out of the downtown core so vacationers don't see the truth. The shooting in Kelowna is not surprising and sadly it won't be the last.

Alex Ohan; Kelowna, BC
Kelowna is a city on Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan Valley, in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. Its name derives from an Okanagan language term for "grizzly bear". Kelowna ranks as the 22nd largest metropolitan area in Canada, with population 108000 Nearby communities include the district of West Kelowna (a separate political entity from Kelowna) to the west across Okanagan Lake, Lake Country and Vernon to the north, as well as Peach land to the southwest and, further to the south, Summerland and Penticton. Father Charles M. Pandosy, a French Roman Catholic Oblate missionary, arriving in 1859 was the first European to settle at Kelowna, a place named "L'anse au sable" (Bay of Sand) in reference to the sandy shoreline. Kelowna was officially incorporated in 1905.

Stunning Summerhill Organic Winery - Kelowna, British Columbia
Stunning Summerhill Organic Winery - Kelowna, British Columbia
Summerhill Pyramid Winery is far more than just a winery, and Stephen Cipes is much more than just your regular wine proprietor. A visit to the Summerhill Pyramid Winery is an experience that runs much deeper than just satisfied taste buds (Summerhill's world class wine) and a happy tummy (Summerhill's organic bistro). It's an enlightening experience that empowers the soul and expands the mind. But it's not surprising when arrive to the winery and see the huge pyramid sitting in the center of the winery and the spiritual Native American Kakooli house on the edge of the vineyard. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is located in Kelowna, in the Okanagan Valley, in British Columbia. The Okanagan Valley is the northernmost semi-arid desert viticulture region in the world. It's a unique climate that offers exquisite conditions for growing world-class wines. But it's not just the location that makes the wine so special. It runs far deeper than that. Stephen Cipes, the owner, has won the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, but the man at "Canada's most visited winery" seems more a spiritual visionary than Wall Street hard-nose. He is a devout admirer of Mother Earth and the power of the universe, and has used both of these to produce some of the finest wines and sparkling wines in the world. Summerhill follows organic growing practices. "No herbicides or pesticides - keeps the lake clean and our grapes don't taste from the chemicals," says Stephen. "These grapes ...
