In this passionate talk Robert Jensen challenges the common belief that feminism is a threat to men. He argues that there are arguments from both justice and self-interest to present to men when explaining the radical feminist position, especially in the context of a critique of the sexual-exploitation industries (prostitution, pornography, stripping). Robert Jensen is Emeritus Professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas in Austin, author, founding board member of the Third Coast Activist Resource Center, and part of the team developing Ecosphere Studies at The Land Institute in Salina.

TEDx RuhrUniversityBochum was started in 2016 by a group of students enthusiastic about bringing the TEDx format to the Ruhr Area. In May 2019, we turned our TEDx conference into one of the largest TEDx events in Europe organized by students. In this lecture, author and professor Robert Jensen explores the realities of pornography. His analysis is rooted in a framework of sexual violence rather than seeing it pornography as an issue of expression or "fantasy." Consequently, his insights place pornography in its appropriate context within patriarchy.
In order to arrive at this analysis, Jensen approaches pornography as if it were any other
type of media and seeks to understand it as a form of mass media. Assuming that it is a form of mass media, Jensen goes on to ask what that tells us about sexuality, masculinity, and ourselves.
It's a similar analysis to the one presented in his book "Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity".

In The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B. DuBois suggested that the question white people so often want to ask black people is, How does it feel to be a problem? This program turns the tables and recognizes some simple facts: Race problems have their roots in a system of white supremacy. White people invented white supremacy. Therefore, the color of the race problem is white. White people are the problem. White people have to ask ourselves: How does it feel to be a problem?
Following the ideas in his book The Heart of Whiteness, Jensen argues that -- even decades after the significant achievements of the civil-rights movement and with an African-American president -- it is still appropriate to describe the United States as a white-supremacist society, in terms of how we think and how we live. Through an analysis of contemporary racial ideology, Jensen presents a framework for critiquing the naturalizing of power and privilege in other arenas of our lives (gender, class, nationality, and ecology). How have we come to accept so easily systems of domination and subordination? How did we become resigned to hierarchy? How can we challenge the unjust and unsustainable nature of the systems in which we live?

Robert Jensen
Robert William Jensen (born July 14, 1958), has been professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin since 1992. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in media law, ethics, and politics.
In his research, Jensen draws on a variety of critical theories. As a radical feminist, Jensen has focused much of his work on the radical feminist critique of pornography and of masculinity. He also has written about white privilege and institutional racism. He also sits on the editorial board of the journal Sexualization, Media, and Society.
Early life
Jensen grew up in North Dakota.
Education
In 1981, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University, Moorhead), and in 1985, he received a Master of Arts degree in journalism and public affairs from American University. In 1992 he completed his Ph.D. in media law and ethics in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota.

Charles Starkweather
Charles Raymond "Charlie" Starkweather (November 24, 1938 – June 25, 1959) was an American teenaged spree killer who murdered eleven people in the states of Nebraska and Wyoming in a two-month murder spree between December 1957 and January 1958. All but one of Starkweather's victims were killed between January 21 and January 29, 1958, the date of his arrest. During the murders committed in 1958, Starkweather was accompanied by his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate. Starkweather was executed 17 months after the events, and Fugate served 17 years in prison before her release in 1976. The Starkweather - Fugate spree has inspired several films including Badlands (1973), and Natural Born Killers.
Early life
Starkweather was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the third of seven children of Guy and Helen Starkweather. The Starkweathers were a poor but respectable family of working class background. Guy Starkweather was by all accounts a mild-mannered man; he was a carpenter who was often unemployed due to rheumatoid arthritis in his hands. During Guy's periods of unemployment, Helen Starkweather supplemented the family's income as a waitress.

His analysis is rooted in a framework of sexual violence rather than seeing it pornography as an issue of expression or "fantasy." Consequently, his insights place pornography in its appropriate context within patriarchy.

This program turns the tables and recognizes some simple facts: Race problems have their roots in a system of white supremacy. White people invented white supremacy. Therefore, the color of the race problem is white. White people are the problem. White people have to ask ourselves: How does it feel to be a problem?
Following the ideas in his book The Heart of Whiteness, Jensen argues that -- even decades after the significant achievements of the civil-rights movement and with an African-American president -- it is still appropriate to describe the United States as a white-supremacist society, in terms of how we think and how we live. Through an analysis of contemporary racial ideology, Jensen presents a framework for critiquing the naturalizing of power and privilege in other arenas of our lives (gender, class, nationality, and ecology). How have we come to accept so easily systems of domination and subordination? How did we become resigned to hierarchy? How can we challenge the unjust and unsustainable nature of the systems in which we live?

In this passionate talk Robert Jensen challenges the common belief that feminism is a threat to men. He argues that there are arguments from both justice and self-interest to present to men when explaining the radical feminist position, especially in the context of a critique of the sexual-exploitation industries (prostitution, pornography, stripping). In his talk Jensen reflects on his own experiences with (radical) feminism and the role of that feminism in making possible a richer, more meaningful life.
Robert Jensen is Emeritus Professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas in Austin, author, founding board member of the Third Coast Activist Resource Center, and part of the team developing Ecosphere Studies at The Land Institute in Salina.

Robert Jensen
Robert William Jensen (born July 14, 1958), has been professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin since 1992. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in media law, ethics, and politics.
In his research, Jensen draws on a variety of critical theories. As a radical feminist, Jensen has focused much of his work on the radical feminist critique of pornography and of masculinity. He also has written about white privilege and institutional racism. He also sits on the editorial board of the journal Sexualization, Media, and Society.
Early life
Jensen grew up in North Dakota.
Education
In 1981, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University, Moorhead), and in 1985, he received a Master of Arts degree in journalism and public affairs from American University. In 1992 he completed his Ph.D. in media law and ethics in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota.
