Today's Top Iran Stories (April 10, 2009)
Today's Top Iran Stories (April 10, 2009)
Today's Top Iran Stories (April 10, 2009) - Crowd marks anniversary of US Embassy take-over in Tehran Members of the Islamic student societies and groups gathered in front of the former US Embassy in Tehran to mark the 29th anniversary of the take-over of that embassy. The new US president, Barak Obama, who has changed the policies of his predecessor, George W. Bush and made overtures to the Iranians in particular and Muslims in general, was today placed by the demonstrators in the category of personalities who have been condemned by extremist Islamists. A caricature of Obama was spread out on the pavement and a shoe placed on his face, symbolizing protest against his presence in the region; and his name was changed from Barak Hussein Obama to Barak Yazid Obama [the Sunni Yazid who fought and killed Hossein, the revered third imam of the Shiis]. The spokesperson of a student group described Obama as a true Zionist and referring to his reconciliatory tone towards Iran and the Muslims, and his calls for compromise and negotiations, his simplemindedness, said: Obama should know that young Iranians are too aware and alert to be deceived by his pleasant visage. Among the slogans chanted, including the usual death to America , the students chanted others such as : Students are awake- and despair of Obama; American change is condemned, is condemned; death to the American change; Death to Obama, Death to Barak Yazid Obama. Chez Damier - You Ain't Dancin' (A Tribute To Paris Is Burning) 1992
Chez Damier - You Ain't Dancin' (A Tribute To Paris Is Burning) 1992
Also known as Chez Damier Untitled... Paris Is Burning is a 1990 documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African American, Latino, gay and transgender communities involved in it. Many members of the ball culture community consider Paris Is Burning to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the "Golden Age" of New York City drag balls, as well as a thoughtful exploration of race, class, and gender in America. The film explores the elaborately-structured Ball competitions in which contestants, adhering to a very specific category or theme, must "walk" (much like a fashion model's runway) and subsequently be judged on criteria including the "realness" of their drag, the beauty of their clothing and their dancing ability. Most of the film alternates between footage of balls and interviews with prominent members of the scene, including Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, Anji Xtravaganza, and Willi Ninja. Many of the contestants vying for trophies are representatives of "Houses" (in the fashion sense, such as "House of Chanel") that serve as intentional families, social groups, and performance teams. Houses and ball contestants who consistently won in their walks eventually earned a "legendary" status. Jennie Livingston, who never went to film school and who spent seven years making Paris Is Burning, concentrated on interviews with key figures in the ball world, many of whom ...
