Lester Joseph Gillis (December 6, 1908 – November 27, 1934), known under the pseudonym George Nelson, was a bank robber and murderer in the 1930s. Gillis was known as Baby Face Nelson, a name given to him due to his youthful appearance and small stature. Usually referred to by criminal associates as "Jimmy", Nelson entered into a partnership with John Dillinger, helping him escape from prison in the famed "9" escape, and was later labeled along with the remaining gang members as public enemy number one.

Nelson was responsible for the murder of several people, and has the dubious distinction of having killed more FBI agents in the line of duty than any other person. Nelson was shot by FBI agents and died after a shootout often termed "The Battle of Barrington".

Early life[link]

George "Baby Face" Nelson was born Lester Joseph Gillis in Chicago's Near West Side in 1908. His mother, Marie Douget, was born to a middle-class family of Belgian farmers and emigrated to the United States in 1889. Douget had known Nelson's father, Joseph Gillis, a tanner, in Belgium, although he had immigrated to the United States several years earlier. Joseph Gillis committed suicide on Christmas Eve, 1924, when his son Lester was 16, and already in reform school.

On July 4, 1921, at the age of twelve, Nelson was arrested after accidentally shooting a fellow child in the jaw with a pistol he had found. He served over a year in the state reformatory. Arrested again for theft and joyriding at age 13, he was sent to a penal school for an additional 18 months.

By 1928, Nelson was working at a Standard Oil station in his neighborhood that was the headquarters of young tire thieves, known as "strippers". After falling in with them, Nelson brushed elbows with many local criminals, including one who gave him a job driving bootleg alcohol throughout the Chicago suburbs. It was through this gig that Nelson became associated with members of the suburban-based Touhy Gang (not the Capone mob, as usually reported). Within two years, Nelson and his gang had graduated to armed robbery. On January 6, 1930, they invaded the home of magazine executive Charles M. Richter. After trussing him up with adhesive tape and cutting the phone lines, they ransacked the house and made off with $25,000 worth of jewelry. Two months later, they carried out a similar heist on the Sheridan Road bungalow of Lottie Brenner Von Beulow. This job netted $50,000 in jewels, including the wedding ring of the bank's owner. Chicago newspapers nicknamed them "The Tape Bandits."

On April 21, 1930, Nelson robbed his first bank, making off with $4,000. A month later, Nelson and his gang pulled their home invasion scheme again, netting $25,000 worth of jewels. On October 3 of that year, Nelson hit the Itasca State Bank for $4,600; a teller later identified Nelson as one of the robbers. Three nights later, Nelson stole the jewelry of the wife of Chicago mayor Big Bill Thompson valued at $18,000. She later described her attacker this way, "He had a baby face. He was good looking, hardly more than a boy, had dark hair and was wearing a gray topcoat and a brown felt hat, turned down brim." Years later, Nelson and his crew were linked to a botched roadhouse robbery in Summit, Illinois on November 23, 1930 that resulted in gunplay that left three people dead and three others wounded. Three nights later, the Tape Bandits hit a Waukegan Road tavern and Nelson ended up committing his first murder of note, when he killed stockbroker Edwin R. Thompson.

Going west[link]

Throughout the winter of 1931, most of the Tape Bandits were rounded up, including Nelson. The ''Chicago Tribune'' referred to their leader as "George 'Baby Face' Nelson" who received a sentence of one year to life in the state penitentiary at Joliet. In February 1932, Nelson escaped during a prison transfer. Through his contacts in the Touhy Gang, Nelson fled west and took shelter with Reno gambler/crime boss William Graham. Using the alias of "Jimmy Johnson", Nelson wound up in Sausalito, California, working for bootlegger Joe Parente. During these San Francisco Bay area criminal ventures, Nelson most probably first met John Paul Chase and Fatso Negri, two men who were at his side during the later half of his career.

Gang leader[link]

The Grand Haven bank job apparently convinced Nelson he was ready to lead his own gang. Through connections in St. Paul's Green Lantern Tavern, Nelson recruited Homer Van Meter, Tommy Carroll, and Eddie Green. With these men (and two other local thieves), Nelson robbed the First National Bank of Brainerd, Minnesota of $32,000 on October 23, 1933. Witnesses reported that Nelson wildly sprayed sub-machine gun bullets at bystanders as he made his getaway. After collecting his wife Helen and four-year old son Ronald, Nelson left with his crew for San Antonio, Texas. While here, Nelson and his gang bought several weapons from underworld gunsmith Hyman Lebman. One of those weapons was a .38 Colt automatic Pistol that had been modified to fire fully automatic (Nelson used this same gun to murder Special Agent W. Carter Baum at Little Bohemia Lodge several months later).

By December 9, a local woman tipped San Antonio police to the nearby presence of "high powered Northern gangsters". Two days later, Tommy Carroll was cornered by two detectives and opened fire, killing Detective H.C. Perrin and wounding Detective Al Hartman. All the Nelson gang, except for Nelson, fled San Antonio. Nelson and his wife traveled west to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he recruited John Paul Chase and Fatso Negri for a new wave of bank robberies in the coming spring.

Partnership with John Dillinger[link]

On March 3, 1934, John Dillinger made his famous "wooden pistol" escape from the jail in Crown Point, Indiana. Although the details remain in some dispute, the escape is suspected to have been arranged and financed by members of Nelson's newly-formed gang, including Homer Van Meter, Tommy Carroll, Eddie Green, and John "Red" Hamilton, with the understanding that Dillinger would repay some part of the bribe money out of his share of the first robbery. The night Dillinger arrived in the Twin Cities, Nelson and his friend John Paul Chase were driving when they were cut off by a car driven by a local paint salesman named Theodore Kidder. Nelson lost his temper and gave chase, crowding Kidder to the curb. When the salesman got out to protest, Nelson fatally shot him.

Two days after this, the new gang (with Hamilton's participation as the sixth man uncertain) struck the Security National Bank at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In the robbery, which netted around $49,000 (figures differ slightly), Nelson severely wounded motorcycle policeman Hale Keith with a burst of sub-machinegun fire as the officer was arriving at the scene.

The six men would soon be identified as "the second Dillinger gang", due to Dillinger's extreme notoriety, but the gang had no leader. On March 13, the gang struck again at the First National Bank in Mason City, Iowa. Dillinger and Hamilton both were shot and wounded in the robbery, where they made away with $52,000. On April 3, federal agents ambushed and killed Eddie Green, though he was unarmed and they were uncertain of his identity. In the aftermath of the Mason City robbery, Nelson and John Paul Chase fled west to Reno, where their old bosses Bill Graham and Jim McKay were fighting a federal mail fraud case. Years later, the FBI determined that, on March 22, 1934, Nelson and Chase abducted the chief witness against the pair, Roy Fritsch, and killed him. Fritsch's quartered body, while never found, was said to have been thrown down an abandoned mine shaft.

Little Bohemia[link]

On the afternoon of April 20, Nelson, Dillinger, Van Meter, Carroll, Hamilton, and gang associate (errand-runner) Pat Reilly, accompanied by Nelson's wife Helen and three girlfriends of the other men, arrived at the secluded Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, for a weekend of rest. The gang's connection to the resort apparently came from the past dealings between Dillinger's attorney, Louis Piquett, and lodge owner Emil Wanatka. Though gang members greeted him by name, Wanatka maintained that he was unaware of their identities until some time on Friday night.

The following day, while she was away from the lodge with her young son at a children's birthday party, Wanatka's wife informed a family member that the Dillinger gang was at the lodge, and the F.B.I. was subsequently given the tip early on April 22. Melvin Purvis and a number of agents arrived by plane from Chicago, and with the gang's departure imminent, attacked the lodge quickly and with little preparation, and without notifying or obtaining help from local authorities.

Wanatka offered a one-dollar dinner special on Sunday nights, and the last of a crowd estimated at 75 were leaving as the agents arrived in the front driveway. A 1933 Chevrolet coupé was leaving at that moment with three departing lodge customers who apparently did not hear an order to halt because the car radio was playing. The agents quickly opened fire on them, instantly killing one and wounding the others, and alerting the gang members inside.

Adding to the chaos, at this moment Pat Reilly returned to the lodge from an out-of-town errand for Van Meter, accompanied by one of the women. Accosted by the agents, Reilly backed out and escaped under fire with one tire having been shot.

Dillinger, Van Meter, and Hamilton immediately escaped through the back of the lodge, which was unguarded, and made their way north on foot through woods and past a lake to commandeer a car and a driver at a resort a mile away. Carroll was not far behind them and easily escaped in a car he stole from yet another lodge two miles away.

Nelson, who had been outside the lodge in an adjacent cabin, characteristically attacked the raiding party head on, exchanging fire with Purvis, before retreating into the lodge under a return volley from other agents. From there he slipped out the back and fled in the opposite direction from the others. Emerging from the woods ninety minutes later, a mile away from Little Bohemia, Nelson kidnapped a couple named Lang from their home and ordered them to drive him away. Apparently dissatisfied with the car's speed, he quickly ordered them to pull up at a brightly lit house where resident Alvin Koerner, aware of the ongoing events, quickly phoned authorities at one of the involved lodges to report a suspicious vehicle in front of his home. Shortly after Nelson had entered the home, taking the Koerners hostage, Emil Wanatka arrived with his brother-in-law and a lodge employee (while a fourth man remained in the car) and were also taken prisoner. Nelson ordered Koerner and Wanatka back into their vehicle, where the fourth man remained unnoticed in the back seat.

As they were preparing to leave, with Wanatka driving at gunpoint, another car arrived with two federal agents — W. Carter Baum and J.C. Newman, and a local constable, Carl Christensen. Nelson quickly took them by surprise at gunpoint and ordered them out of their car. As the driver, Newman, was getting out, Nelson, apparently detecting a suspicious movement, opened fire with a custom-converted machine gun pistol, severely wounding Christensen and Newman and killing Baum. Nelson was later quoted as having said that Baum had him "cold" and couldn't understand why he hadn't fired. Baum's weapon was later found with the safety on.

Nelson fled the scene in the agents' car. Less than 15 miles away, the car had a flat tire and finally became mired in mud as Nelson attempted unsuccessfully to change it. Back on foot, he wandered into the woods and took up residence with a Chippewa family in their secluded cabin for several days before making his final escape in another commandeered vehicle.

Three of the women who had accompanied the gang, including Nelson's wife Helen Gillis, were captured inside the lodge. After grueling interrogation by the F.B.I., the three were ultimately convicted on harboring charges and released on parole.

With an agent and an innocent bystander dead, and four more severely wounded, including two more innocent bystanders, and the complete escape of the Dillinger gang, the F.B.I came under severe criticism, with calls for J. Edgar Hoover's resignation and a widely circulated petition demanding Purvis' suspension.

Nelson as public enemy #1[link]

At the time of the Little Bohemia shootout, Nelson's identity as a member of the Dillinger gang had been known to the F.B.I. for only two weeks. Following the killing of Baum, Nelson became nationally notorious and was made a high-priority target of the Bureau. The focus on him and the murdered agent also served to deflect some of the intense criticism directed at Hoover and Purvis following the Little Bohemia debacle.

A day after the Little Bohemia raid, Dillinger, Hamilton, and Van Meter ran through a police road block near Hastings, Minnesota, drawing fire from officers there. A ricocheting bullet struck Hamilton in the back, fatally wounding him. Hamilton reportedly died in hiding on April 30 or May 1, 1934, and was secretly buried by Dillinger and others including Nelson, who had rejoined the gang in Aurora, Illinois.

On June 7, gang member Tommy Carroll was killed in a battle with police in Waterloo, Iowa. Carroll and his girlfriend Jean Crompton (who had been captured and tried with Helen Gillis after Little Bohemia) had grown close to the Nelsons, and his death was a personal blow to them. The couple went into hiding during the ensuing weeks, and although they were in the Chicago area, their precise movements in this period remain obscure. The Nelsons reportedly lived in various tourist camps, while continuing to secretly meet with family members whenever possible.

On June 27, former gang errand-runner and Little Bohemia fugitive Pat Reilly was surrounded as he slept and was captured alive in St. Paul, Minnesota.

On the morning of June 30, Nelson, Dillinger, Van Meter, and one or more additional accomplices robbed the Merchants National Bank in South Bend, Indiana. One man involved in the robbery is believed to have possibly been Pretty Boy Floyd, based on several eyewitness identifications as well as the later account of Joseph "Fatso" Negri, an old Nelson associate from California who was serving as a gofer to the gang at this time. Another rumored participant was Nelson's childhood friend Jack Perkins, also an associate of the gang at that time. (Perkins would later be tried for the robbery and acquitted).

When the robbery began, a policeman named Howard Wagner had been directing traffic outside; responding quickly to the scene and attempting to draw his gun, he was shot to death by Van Meter, who was stationed outside the bank. Also outside the bank, Nelson exchanged fire with a local jeweler who had shot him in the chest - ineffectively, because of Nelson's bullet-proof vest. As the merchant retreated into his store under a return volley from Nelson, a man in a parked car was wounded. Nelson also grappled briefly with a teenager who tackled him until Nelson (or Van Meter) stunned the boy with a blow from his gun. When Dillinger and the man identified as Floyd (not confirmed) emerged from the bank with sacks containing $28,000, they brought three hostages with them (including the bank president) to deter gunfire from three patrolmen on the scene. The policemen fired nonetheless, wounding two of the hostages before grazing Van Meter in the head. The gang escaped, and Van Meter recovered. In the constant and chaotic exchange of gunfire, several other bystanders were wounded by shots, ricochets, or flying broken glass. It proved to be the last confirmed robbery for all of the known and suspected participants, including Floyd (unknown).

During the month of July, as the FBI manhunt for him continued, Nelson and his wife fled to California with associate John Paul Chase, who would remain with Nelson for the rest of his life. Upon their return to Chicago on July 15, the gang held a reunion meeting at a favorite rendezvous site. When the meeting was interrupted by two Illinois state troopers, Fred McAllister and Gilbert Cross, Nelson fired on their vehicle with his converted "machine gun pistol", wounding both men as the gangsters retreated. Cross was badly injured, but both men survived. Nelson's responsibility was uncertain until verification came later in the form of a confession from Chase.

On July 22, 1934, Dillinger was ambushed and killed by FBI agents outside the Biograph Theater in Lincoln Park, Chicago. The next day the FBI announced that "Pretty Boy" Floyd was now Public Enemy No. 1. On October 22nd, 1934, Floyd was killed in a shootout with agents including Melvin Purvis. Subsequently, J. Edgar Hoover announced that "Baby Face" Nelson was now Public Enemy No. 1.

On August 23, Van Meter was ambushed and killed by police in St. Paul, Minnesota, leaving Nelson as the sole survivor of the so-called "Second Dillinger Gang".

In the ensuing months, Nelson and his wife, usually accompanied by Chase, drifted west to cities including Sacramento and San Francisco, California and Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada often living in auto camps before returning to Chicago some time around November 1. Nelson's movements during the final month of his life are largely unknown.

By the end of the month, FBI interest had settled on a former hideout of Nelson's, the Lake Como Inn in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where it was believed that Nelson might return for the winter. When the Nelsons and Chase did return to the inn on November 27, they briefly came face to face with surprised and unprepared FBI agents who had staked it out. The fugitives sped away before any shots were fired. Armed with a description of the car (a black Ford V8) and its license plate number (639-578), agents swarmed into the area.

The battle began when Nelson, Helen Gillis, and John Paul Chase were driving down a road and spotted a car being driven in the opposite direction by FBI agents Thomas McDade and William Ryan. Nelson hated police and federal agents and used a list of license plates he had compiled to actively hunt them at every opportunity. The agents and the outlaw recognized each other simultaneously, and after several U-turns by both vehicles it was Nelson who wound up in pursuit. Nelson and Chase fired at the agents, who fought to retain control of their car with both windshields shattered. After dangerously swerving to avoid an oncoming milk truck, Ryan and McDade wound up in a field anxiously awaiting Nelson and Chase, who had stopped pursuing. They did not know that a shot fired by Ryan had punctured the radiator of Nelson's Ford, or that the Ford was now being pursued by a Hudson automobile driven by two more agents: Herman Hollis (who was alleged to have delivered the fatal shot to a wounded Pretty Boy Floyd a month earlier) and Cowley. As a result, Ryan and McDade were oblivious to the events that happened next.

With his vehicle rapidly losing power and his pursuers attempting to pull alongside, Nelson abruptly swerved into the entrance of Barrington's North Side Park and slammed to a halt opposite three gas stations. Hollis and Cowley overshot them by over , stopped at an angle, and exited the car under fire through the passenger door, taking defensive positions behind the car. The ensuing shootout was witnessed by more than 30 people.

Nelson's wife, fleeing into an open field under instructions from Nelson, turned briefly in time to see Nelson hit with the shot that would prove fatal. He grasped his side and sat down on the running board as Chase continued to fire from behind the bandits' car. Nelson fired at the agents with a .351 rifle so rapidly that bystanders mistook it for a machine gun. Six bullets from Cowley's submachine gun eventually struck Nelson in the chest and stomach before Nelson mortally wounded Cowley with bullets in the chest and stomach, while pellets from Hollis's shotgun struck Nelson in the legs and momentarily downed him. As Nelson regained his feet, Hollis, possibly already wounded, moved to better cover behind a utility pole while drawing his pistol, but was killed by a bullet to the head before he could return fire. Nelson stood over Hollis's body for a moment, then limped toward the agents' bullet-riddled car. Nelson was too badly wounded to drive, so Chase got behind the wheel, and the two men and Nelson's wife fled the scene. Nelson had been shot a total of seventeen times; seven of Cowley's submachine gun slugs had struck his torso and ten of Hollis's shotgun pellets had torn into his legs. After telling his wife "I'm done for", Nelson gave directions as Chase drove them to a safe house on Walnut Street in Wilmette. Nelson died in bed here, with his wife at his side, at 7:35 that evening. His stripped body was found the next morning in a ditch in Skokie, Illinois.

Hollis, with massive head wounds, was declared dead soon after arriving at the hospital. At a different hospital, Cowley hung on long enough to confer briefly with Melvin Purvis and undergo unsuccessful surgery before succumbing to a stomach wound similar to Nelson's. Following an anonymous telephone tip, Nelson's body was discovered in a ditch, wrapped in a blanket. The ditch was in front of St. Peter Catholic Cemetery in Skokie, which still exists today. Helen Gillis later stated that she had placed the blanket around Nelson's body, as she said, "He always hated being cold..."

Newspapers then reported, based on the questionable wording of an order from J. Edgar Hoover ("...find the woman and give her no quarter"), that the FBI had issued a "death order" for Nelson's young widow, who wandered the streets of Chicago as a fugitive for several days, described in print as America's first female "public enemy". After surrendering on Thanksgiving Day, Helen Gillis, who had been paroled after capture at Little Bohemia, served a year in prison for harboring her late husband. Chase was apprehended later and served a term at Alcatraz.

Burial[link]

Gillis and Nelson are buried at Saint Joseph's Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois.

Personality[link]

In contrast to John Dillinger, Nelson was the antithesis of popular, Robin Hood-like gangsters of the Depression era. A hot-tempered man, Nelson did not hesitate to kill lawmen and innocent bystanders alike. One of the high profile outlaws of that era, he and Clyde Barrow were accused of killing more than a dozen law officers between them. Paradoxically, Nelson was also a devoted family man who often had his wife and children with him while running from the law. After John Dillinger's death in July 1934, Nelson became Public Enemy Number One.

Mickey Rooney (born Joseph Yule, Jr.; September 23, 1920) is an American film actor and entertainer whose film, television, and stage appearances span nearly his entire lifetime. He has received multiple awards, including a Juvenile Academy Award, an Honorary Academy Award, two Golden Globes and an Emmy Award. Working as a performer since he was a child, he was a superstar as a teenager for the films in which he played Andy Hardy, and he has had one of the longest careers of any actor, to date spanning 90 years actively making films in ten decades, from 1920s to 2010s. For a younger generation of fans, he gained international fame for his leading role as Henry Dailey in The Family Channel's ''The Adventures of the Black Stallion'', as well as the film itself.

Early life[link]

Rooney was born Joseph Yule, Jr. in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Joseph Yule, was from Scotland, and his mother, Nellie W. (née Carter), was from Kansas City, Missouri. Both of his parents were in vaudeville, appearing in a Brooklyn production of ''A Gaiety Girl'' when Joseph, Jr. was born. He began performing at the age of 17 months as part of his parents' routine, wearing a specially tailored tuxedo.

When he was 14 months old, unknown to everyone, he crawled onstage wearing overalls and a little harmonica around his neck. He sneezed and his father, Joe Sr., grabbed him up, introducing him to the audience as Sonny Yule. He felt the spotlight on him and has described it as his mother's womb. From that moment on, the stage was his home.

His father was a womanizer and heavy drinker, leaving the family when Joe Jr. was only three. While Joe Sr. was traveling, Joe Jr. and his mother moved from Brooklyn, New York to Kansas City, Missouri to live with his aunt. While his mother was reading the entertainment newspaper, Nellie was interested in getting Hal Roach to approach the young star to participate in the ''Our Gang'' series in Hollywood. Roach offered $5 a day to Joe Jr. while the other young stars were paid five times more.

As he was getting bit parts in films, he was working with other established film stars such as Joel McCrea, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Jean Harlow. While selling newspapers around the corner, he also entered into Hollywood Professional School, where he went to school with dozens of unfamiliar students such as: Joseph A. Wapner, Nanette Fabray, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, among many others, and later Hollywood High School, where he graduated in 1938.

Career[link]

Mickey McGuire[link]

The Yules separated in 1924 during a slump in vaudeville, and in 1925, Nell Yule moved with her son to Hollywood, California, where she managed a tourist home. Fontaine Fox had placed a newspaper ad for a dark-haired child to play the role of "Mickey McGuire" in a series of short films. Lacking the money to have her son's hair dyed, Mrs. Yule took her son to the audition after applying burnt cork to his scalp. Joe got the role and became "Mickey" for 78 of the comedies, running from 1927 to 1936, starting with ''Mickey's Circus'', released September 4, 1927. These had been adapted from the ''Toonerville Trolley'' comic strip, which contained a character named Mickey McGuire. Joe Yule briefly became Mickey McGuire legally in order to trump an attempted copyright lawsuit (if it was his legal name, the film producer Larry Darmour did not owe the comic strip writers royalties). His mother also changed her surname to McGuire in an attempt to bolster the argument, but the film producers lost. The litigation settlement awarded damages to the owners of the cartoon character, as well as compelled the twelve-year-old actor to refrain from calling himself by the name Mickey McGuire on and off screen.

Rooney later claimed that, during his Mickey McGuire days, he met cartoonist Walt Disney at the Warner Brothers studio, and that Disney was inspired to name Mickey Mouse after him, although Disney always said that he had changed the name from "Mortimer Mouse" to "Mickey Mouse" on the suggestion of his wife.

During an interruption in the series in 1932, Mrs. Yule made plans to take her son on a ten-week vaudeville tour as McGuire, and Fox sued successfully to stop him from using the name. Mrs. Yule suggested the stage name of Mickey Looney for her comedian son, which he altered slightly to Rooney, a less frivolous version. Rooney did other films in his adolescence, including several more of the McGuire films, and signed with MGM in 1934. MGM cast Rooney as the teenage son of a judge in 1937's ''A Family Affair'', setting Rooney on the way to another successful film series.

"Andy Hardy" and Judy Garland[link]

In 1937, Rooney was selected to portray Andy Hardy in ''A Family Affair'' (1937), which MGM had planned as a B-movie. Rooney provided comic relief as the son of Judge James K. Hardy, portrayed by Lionel Barrymore (although Lewis Stone would play the role of Judge Hardy in later films). The film was an unexpected success, and led to 13 more ''Andy Hardy'' films between 1937 and 1946, and a final film in 1958. Rooney also received top billing as "Shockey Carter" in ''Hoosier Schoolboy'' (1937).

Also in 1937, Mickey made his first film alongside Judy Garland with ''Thoroughbreds Don't Cry''. Garland and Rooney became close friends and a successful song and dance team. Besides three of the Andy Hardy films, where she portrayed Betsy Booth, a younger girl with a crush on Andy, they appeared together in a string of successful musicals, including the Oscar-nominated ''Babes in Arms'' (1939). During an interview in the documentary film ''When the Lion Roars'', Rooney describes their friendship:

Rooney's breakthrough role as a dramatic actor came in 1938's ''Boys Town'' opposite Spencer Tracy as Whitey Marsh, which opened shortly before his 18th birthday. Rooney was awarded a special Juvenile Academy Award in 1939 and was named the biggest box-office draw in 1939, 1940 and 1941. Unquestionably a well-known entertainer by the early 1940s, Rooney, with Garland, was one of many celebrities caricatured in Tex Avery's 1941 Warner Bros. cartoon ''Hollywood Steps Out''. As of 2012, Rooney is the only surviving entertainer depicted in the cartoon. In 1991, Rooney was honored by the Young Artist Foundation with its Former Child Star "Lifetime Achievement" Award recognizing his achievements within the film industry as a child actor. After presenting the award to Rooney, the foundation subsequently renamed the accolade "The Mickey Rooney Award" in his honor.

After the war[link]

In 1944, Rooney entered military service. He served more than 21 months, until shortly after the end of World War II. During and after the war he helped entertain the troops in America and Europe, and spent part of the time as a radio personality on the American Forces Network and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for entertaining troops in combat zones. In addition to the Bronze Star Medal, Rooney also received the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and World War Two Victory Medal for his military service.

After his return to civilian life, his career slumped. He appeared in a number of films, including ''Words and Music'' in 1948, which paired him for the last time with Garland on film (he appeared with her on one episode as a guest on her CBS variety series in 1963). He briefly starred in a CBS radio series, ''Shorty Bell'', in the summer of 1948, and reprised his role as "Andy Hardy", with most of the original cast, in a syndicated radio version of ''The Hardy Family'' in 1949 and 1950 (repeated on Mutual during 1952).

His first television series, ''The Mickey Rooney Show: Hey, Mulligan'' (created by Blake Edwards with Rooney as his own producer), appeared on NBC television for thirty-two episodes between August 28, 1954 and June 4, 1955. In 1951, he directed a feature film for Columbia Pictures, ''My True Story'' starring Helen Walker. Rooney also starred as a ragingly egomaniacal television comedian in the live 90-minute television drama ''The Comedian'', in the ''Playhouse 90'' series on the evening of Valentine's Day in 1957, and as himself in a revue called ''The Musical Revue of 1959'' based on the 1929 film ''The Hollywood Revue of 1929'' which was edited into a film in 1960, by British International Pictures.

In 1958, Rooney joined Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra in hosting an episode of NBC's short-lived ''Club Oasis'' comedy and variety show. In 1960, Rooney directed and starred in ''The Private Lives of Adam and Eve'', an ambitious comedy known for its multiple flashbacks and many cameos. In the 1960s, Rooney returned to theatrical entertainment. He still accepted film roles in undistinguished films, but occasionally would appear in better works, such as ''Requiem for a Heavyweight'' (1962), ''It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World'' (1963), and ''The Black Stallion'' (1979). One of Rooney's more controversial roles came in the highly acclaimed 1961 film ''Breakfast at Tiffany's'' where he played a stereotyped buck-toothed myopic Japanese neighbor (Mr. Yunioshi) of the main character, Holly Golightly. Despite Rooney's protests that he was congratulated for the role by Asians, that role would later be held up as one of the most notorious examples of Hollywood's history of stereotypical depictions of that racial group, evidenced in the film ''Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story'' when future Asian-American film star, Bruce Lee, was deeply offended seeing the film.

On December 31, 1961, he appeared on television's ''What's My Line'' and mentioned that he had already started enrolling students in the MRSE (Mickey Rooney School of Entertainment). His school venture never came to fruition, but for several years he was a spokesman/partner in Pennsylvania's Downingtown Inn, a country club and golf resort.

In 1966, while Rooney was working on the film ''Ambush Bay'' in the Philippines, his wife Barbara Ann Thomason (akas: Tara Thomas, Carolyn Mitchell), a former pin-up model and aspiring actress who had won 17 straight beauty contests in Southern California, was found dead in their bed. Beside her was her lover, Milos Milos, an actor friend of Rooney's. Detectives ruled it murder-suicide, which was committed with Rooney's own gun.

Rooney was awarded an Academy Juvenile Award in 1938, and in 1983 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted him their Academy Honorary Award for his lifetime of achievement. He was mentioned in the 1972 song "Celluloid Heroes" by The Kinks: ''"If you stomped on Mickey Rooney/ He'd still turn round and smile..."''

Character actor[link]

In addition to his movie roles, Rooney made numerous guest-starring roles as a character actor for nearly six decades, beginning with an episode of ''Celanese Theatre''. The part led to other roles on such television series as ''Schlitz Playhouse'', ''Playhouse 90'', ''Producers' Showcase'', ''Alcoa Theatre'', ''Wagon Train'', ''G.E. True Theater'', ''Hennesey'', ''The Dick Powell Theatre'', ''Arrest and Trial'', ''Burke's Law'', ''Combat!'', ''The Fugitive'', ''Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre'', ''The Jean Arthur Show'', ''The Name of the Game'', ''Dan August'', ''Night Gallery'', ''The Love Boat'', ''Kung Fu: The Legend Continues'', among many others.

Television, stage and ''The Black Stallion''[link]

Rooney made a successful transition to television and stage work. In 1961, he guest starred in the 13-week James Franciscus adventure–drama television series ''The Investigators'' on CBS. In 1963, he even entered ''The Twilight Zone'', giving a one-man performance in the episode "The Last Night of a Jockey". In 1964, he launched another half-hour sitcom, ''Mickey'', on ABC. The story line had "Mickey" operating a resort hotel in southern California. Son Tim Rooney appeared as Rooney's teenaged son on the program, and Emmaline Henry starred as Rooney's wife. It lasted 17 episodes, ending primarily due to the suicide of co-star Sammee Tong in October 1964.

He won a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for his role in 1981's ''Bill''. Playing opposite Dennis Quaid, Rooney's character was a mentally challenged man attempting to live on his own after leaving an institution. He reprised his role in 1983's ''Bill: On His Own'', earning an Emmy nomination for the role.

Rooney did the voices for four Christmas TV animated/stop action specials: ''Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town'' (1970), ''The Year Without a Santa Claus'' (1974), ''Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July'' (1979), and ''A Miser Brothers' Christmas'' (2008) — always playing Santa Claus. In 1970, he was approached by television producer Norman Lear to consider taking on the role of Archie Bunker in the upcoming CBS series, ''All in the Family''. Like Jackie Gleason before him, Mickey rejected the role, which ultimately went to Carroll O'Connor.

He continued to work on stage and television through the 1980s and 1990s, appearing in the acclaimed stage play ''Sugar Babies'' with Ann Miller beginning in 1979. He also starred in the short-lived sitcom, ''One of the Boys'', along with 2 unfamiliar young stars, Dana Carvey and Nathan Lane, in 1982. He toured Canada in a dinner theatre production of ''The Mind with the Naughty Man'' in the mid-1990s. He played The Wizard in a stage production of ''The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'' with Eartha Kitt at Madison Square Garden. Kitt was later replaced by Jo Anne Worley. In 1995 he starred with Charlton Heston, Peter Graves and Deborah Winters in the Warren Chaney docudrama ''America: A Call to Greatness''. He also appeared in the documentary ''That's Entertainment! III''.

Rooney voiced Mr. Cherrywood in ''The Care Bears Movie'' (1985), and starred as the Movie Mason in a Disney Channel Original Movie family film 2000's ''Phantom of the Megaplex''. He had a guest spot on an episode of ''The Golden Girls'' as Sophia's boyfriend "Rocko", who claimed to be a bank robber. He voiced himself in the ''Simpsons'' episode "Radioactive Man" of 1995. In 1996–97, Mickey played Talbut on the TV series, Kleo The Misfit Unicorn produced by Gordon Stanfield Animation (GSA). He co-starred in ''Night at the Museum'' in 2006 with Dick Van Dyke and Ben Stiller.

After starring in one unsuccessful TV series and for turning down an offer on a huge TV series, Rooney finally hit the jackpot, at 70, when he was offering a starring role on The Family Channel's, ''The Adventures of the Black Stallion'', where he reprised his role as Henry Dailey from the film of the same name, eleven years earlier. The show was based on a novel by Walter Farley. For this role, he had to travel all the way to Vancouver. Just like the film itself, the ''Black Stallion'' TV series, Rooney became one of the most beloved stars, that the show itself became an immediate hit with teenagers, young adults and people all over the world. The show was also seen in 70 countries. It also lost out to ''Harry and the Hendersons'', when the show was nominated for a Young Artist Award in the "Best Off-Prime Time or Cable Family Series" category.

Also starring on ''Black Stallion'' were Docs Keepin Time who played "The Black Stallion", but did not have a voice part in the series, despite appearing in every episode of the series, with an unfamiliar Canadian high school student, a fan of Rooney's films, a voice-over actor, a future acting instructor, and online radio host, Richard Ian Cox, in the role of Henry's teenaged traveler, Alec Ramsay. The on- and off-screen chemistry between Rooney and Cox was an immediate success story of 1990s television. Richard also had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Mickey's real-life family, when not filming. For its three seasons on air, Rooney was nominated for a Gemini Award in the category of "Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role", but didn't win. By the end of the third season, Black Stallion's ratings were declining, the show was cancelled in 1993, after three seasons and 78 episodes.

In December 2009, he appeared as a guest to a dinner party hosted by David Gest on ''Come Dine With Me''.

Current work[link]

Rooney appeared in television commercials for Garden State Life Insurance Company in 1999, alongside his wife Jan Rooney. In commercials shown in 2007, he can be seen in the background washing imaginary dishes.

In 2003, Rooney and his wife began their association with Rainbow Puppet Productions, providing their voices to the 100th Anniversary production of "Toyland!" an adaptation of Victor Herbert's ''Babes in Toyland''. He created the voice for the Master Toymaker while Jan provided the voice for Mother Goose. Since that time, they have created voices for additional Rainbow Puppet Productions including "Pirate Party" which also features vocal performances by Carol Channing. Both productions continue to tour theaters across the country.

He continues to work in film and tours with his wife in a multi-media live stage production called ''Let's Put On a Show!'' His first performance of this show after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack was in Bend, Oregon, in which Mickey and Jan requested the show begin with the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner" by Jan offstage with only the American Flag visible on stage.

On May 26, 2007, he was grand marshal at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival. Rooney made his British pantomime debut, playing Baron Hardup in Cinderella, at the Sunderland Empire Theatre over the 2007 Christmas period, a role he reprised in 2009 at the Milton Keynes theatre.

In 2008, Rooney starred as Chief, a wise old ranch owner, in the independent family feature film ''Lost Stallions: The Journey Home'', marking a return to starring in equestrian-themed productions for the first time since the 1990s TV show ''Adventures of the Black Stallion''. Even though they've acted together before, ''Lost Stallions: The Journey Home'' is the sole film to date in which he and Jan portrayed a married couple on screen.

Rooney made a brief cameo appearance in ''The Muppets'', making his career span 10 decades.

Personal life[link]

Rooney has been married 8 times. In the 1950s and 1960s, he was often the subject of comedians' jokes for his alleged inability to stay married. He is currently married to Jan Chamberlin. He has 9 children from his eight marriages, as well as nineteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. In 1942, he married Hollywood starlet Ava Gardner, but the two were divorced well before she became a star in her own right. While stationed in the military in Alabama in 1944, Rooney met and married local beauty queen Betty Jane Phillips. This marriage ended in divorce after he returned from Europe at the end of World War II. His subsequent marriages to Martha Vickers (1949) and Elaine Mahnken (1952) were also short-lived and ended in divorce. In 1958, Rooney married Barbara Ann Thomason, but tragedy struck when she was murdered in 1966. Falling into deep depression, he married Barbara's friend, Marge Lane, who helped him take care of his young children. The marriage lasted only 100 days. He was married to Carolyn Hockett from 1969 to 1974, but financial instability ended the relationship. Finally, in 1978, Rooney married Jan Chamberlin, his 8th wife. , they live in Westlake Village, California. Mickey is an outspoken advocates for veterans and senior rights.

Rooney's oldest child Mickey Rooney, Jr. is a born-again Christian. He and several of Rooney's other eight children have worked at various times in show business. One of them, actor Tim Rooney, died in 2006 on Mickey's birthday at the age of 59.

On September 23, 2010, Rooney celebrated his 90th birthday at Feinstein's at Loews Regency in the Upper East Side of New York City. Among the people who were attending the party were: Donald Trump, Regis Philbin, Nathan Lane and Tony Bennett. In December 2010 he was honored as Turner Classic Movies Star of the Month.

On February 16, 2011, Rooney was granted a temporary restraining order against Christopher Aber. Christopher is the oldest of Jan Rooney's two sons from a previous marriage. Many press releases state that the restraining order included Mickey Rooney, Jan's son Mark Rooney, who is currently Mickey's caregiver, and wife Jan Rooney. Public record states that the restraining order in fact included Mickey Rooney, Mark Rooney and Mark's wife Charlene Rooney. Jan Rooney was not included in the restraining order and has publicly denied any abuse in defense of her son Christopher. On March 2, 2011 Rooney appeared before a special US Senate committee that was considering legislation to curb elder abuse. Rooney stated that he was financially abused by unnamed family members. On March 27, 2011, all of Rooney's finances were permanently handed over to lawyers over the claim of missing money.

In April 2011, the temporary restraining order that Rooney was previously granted was replaced by a confidential settlement between Rooney and his stepson. Christopher Aber and Jan Rooney have denied all the allegations.

John Herbert Dillinger, Jr. (June 22, 1903 – July 22, 1934) was an American bank robber of German descent in the Depression-era United States. He was charged with, but never convicted of, the murder of an East Chicago, Indiana police officer during a shoot-out. This was his only alleged homicide. His gang robbed two dozen banks and four police stations. Dillinger escaped from jail twice.

In 1933–34, seen in retrospect as the heyday of the Depression-era outlaw, Dillinger was the most notorious of all, standing out even among more violent criminals such as Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Bonnie and Clyde. Media reports were spiced with exaggerated accounts of Dillinger's bravado and daring and his colorful personality. The government demanded federal action, and J. Edgar Hoover developed a more sophisticated Federal Bureau of Investigation as a weapon against organized crime and used Dillinger and his gang as his campaign platform to launch the FBI.

After evading police in four states for almost a year, Dillinger was wounded and returned to his father's home to recover. He returned to Chicago in July 1934 and met his end at the hands of police and federal agents who were informed of his whereabouts by Ana Cumpănaş (the owner of the brothel where Dillinger sought refuge at the time). On July 22, the police and Division of Investigation closed in on the Biograph Theater. Federal agents, led by Melvin Purvis, moved to arrest him as he left the theater. He pulled a weapon and attempted to flee but was shot three (four according to some historians) times and killed.

Family and background[link]

John Herbert Dillinger, Jr. was born on June 22, 1903, in the Oak Hill section of Indianapolis, Indiana, the younger of two children born to John Wilson Dillinger (July 2, 1864 – November 3, 1943) and Mary Ellen "Mollie" Lancaster (1860–1907). According to some biographers, his grandfather, Matthias Dillinger, emigrated to the United States in 1851 from Metz, in the region of Alsace-Lorraine, then under French sovereignty. Matthias Dillinger was born in German-Prussian Gisingen, near Dillingen, Saarland. Dillinger's parents had married on August 23, 1887. Dillinger's father was a grocer by trade and, reportedly, a harsh man. In an interview with reporters, he said that he was firm in his discipline and believed in the adage "spare the rod and spoil the child". Dillinger's older sister, Audrey, was born March 6, 1889. Dillinger's mother died in 1907 just before his fourth birthday. Audrey married Emmett "Fred" Hancock in 1907, had seven children and resided in Maywood, Indiana. She died in Indianapolis in March 1987 at the age of 98 years. Dillinger was cared for by his sister during his early life until his father remarried on May 23, 1912, to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Fields (1878–1933). Initially, Dillinger disliked his stepmother but reportedly eventually came to love her. Dillinger's father and stepmother had three children, Hubert Dillinger, born c. 1913, Doris M. Dillinger (December 12, 1917 – March 14, 2001) and Frances Dillinger (born c. 1922).

Formative years and marriage[link]

As a teenager, Dillinger was frequently in trouble with the law for fighting and petty theft; he was also noted for his "bewildering personality" and bullying of smaller children. He quit school to work in an Indianapolis machine shop. Although he worked hard at his job, he would stay out all night at parties. His father feared that the city was corrupting his son, prompting him to move the family to Mooresville, Indiana, in about 1920. Dillinger's wild and rebellious behavior was resilient despite his new rural life. He was arrested in 1922 for auto theft, and his relationship with his father deteriorated. His troubles led him to enlist in the United States Navy where he was a Fireman 3rd Class assigned aboard the battleship USS ''Utah'', but he deserted a few months later when his ship was docked in Boston. He was eventually dishonorably discharged. Dillinger then returned to Mooresville where he met Beryl Ethel Hovious. The two were married on April 12, 1924. He attempted to settle down, but he had difficulty holding a job and preserving his marriage. The marriage ended in divorce on June 20, 1929.

Dillinger was unable to find a job and began planning a robbery with his friend Ed Singleton. The two robbed a local grocery store, stealing $50. Leaving the scene they were spotted by a minister who recognized the men and reported them to the police. The two men were arrested the next day. Singleton pleaded not guilty, but Dillinger's father convinced him to confess to the crime and plead guilty. Dillinger was convicted of assault and battery with intent to rob, and conspiracy to commit a felony. He was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison for his crimes. His father told reporters he regretted his advice and was appalled by the sentence. He pleaded with the judge to shorten the sentence but with no success. En route to the prison, Dillinger briefly escaped his captors but was apprehended within a few minutes.

Criminal career[link]

Prison time[link]

Dillinger embraced the criminal lifestyle behind bars in the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. Upon being admitted to the prison he is quoted as saying, "I will be the meanest bastard you ever saw when I get out of here." His physical examination upon being admitted to the prison showed that he had gonorrhea. The treatment for his condition was extremely painful. He became embittered against society because of his long prison sentence and befriended other criminals, such as seasoned bank robbers like Pete Pierpont, Charles Makley, and Russell Clark, who taught Dillinger how to be a successful criminal. The men planned heists that they would commit soon after they were released. John Dillinger studied Herman Lamm's meticulous bank-robbing system and used it extensively throughout his criminal career.

His father launched a campaign to have him released and was able to get 188 signatures on a petition. Dillinger was paroled on May 10, 1933, after serving nine and a half years. Dillinger's stepmother became sick just before he was released from prison, and she died before he arrived at her home. Released at the height of the Great Depression, Dillinger had little prospect of finding employment. He immediately returned to crime and on August 14 robbed a bank in Bluffton, Ohio. Tracked by police from Dayton, Ohio, he was captured and later transferred to the Allen County jail in Lima to be indicted in connection to the Bluffton robbery. After searching him before letting him into the prison, the police discovered a document which appeared to be a prison escape plan. They demanded Dillinger tell them what the document meant, but he refused.

Dillinger had helped conceive a plan for the escape of Pierpont, Clark and six others he had met while previously in prison, most of whom worked in the prison laundry. Dillinger had friends smuggle guns into their prison cells, with which they escaped, four days after Dillinger's capture. The group known as "the First Dillinger Gang" included Harry "Pete" Pierpont, Russell Clark, Charles Makley, Edward W. Shouse, Jr., Harry Copeland, John "Red" Hamilton, James "Oklahoma Jack" Clark, and Dillinger's mentor Walter Dietrich, a member of the Herman Lamm Gang. Pierpont, Clark, and Makley arrived in Lima on October 12, where they impersonated Indiana State Police officers, claiming they had come to extradite Dillinger to Indiana. When the sheriff, Jess Sarber, asked for their credentials, Pierpont shot him and beat him to death, then released Dillinger from his cell. The four men escaped back into Indiana where they joined the rest of the gang. Sheriff Sarber was the gang's first police killing of an estimated 13 lawmen deaths by Dillinger gang members.

Bank robberies[link]

The Bureau of Investigation (BOI), a precursor of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was brought into the investigation to help identify the criminals, although the men had not violated any federal law. It was one of the first cases in which the BOI intervened in matters outside its jurisdiction. Using their superior fingerprint matching technology, they successfully identified all of the suspects and issued national bulletins offering rewards for their capture.

Dillinger and his gang began a streak of bank robberies across Indiana. Among Dillinger's more celebrated exploits was his pretending to be a sales representative for a company that sold bank alarm systems (and then "testing" the bank's securit carrying out an actual robbery). He reportedly entered a number of Indiana and Ohio banks and used this ruse to assess security systems and bank vaults of prospective targets. Another time, the gang pretended to be part of a film company that was scouting locations for a "bank robbery" scene. Bystanders stood and smiled as a ''real'' robbery ensued and Dillinger's gang fled. Stories such as this only served to increase Dillinger's burgeoning legend. Dillinger was believed to have been associated with gangs who robbed dozens of banks and accumulated a total of more than $300,000. Banks allegedly robbed by Dillinger and his associates include:

One possibly true urban legend is that Dillinger robbed 1,000 coin bags of Peace Dollars.

On December 11, 1933, a member of the Dillinger gang killed San Antonio Detective Henry C. Perrow. To obtain more supplies, the gang attacked the state police arsenals in Auburn and Peru, stealing machine guns, rifles, revolvers, ammunition and bulletproof vests. They then headed to Chicago to hide out. On December 14, 1933, gang member John "Red" Hamilton murdered a police detective. A month later, Dillinger led the gang in another bank robbery, holding up the First National Bank in East Chicago and killing police officer William Patrick O'Malley. Dillinger was officially charged with the murder although the identity of the actual killer was debatable, and it is in question whether Dillinger participated in the robbery at all. As police began closing in again, the men left Chicago to hide out first in Florida; later at the Gardner Hotel in El Paso, Texas, where a highly visible police presence dissuaded Dillinger from trying to cross the border at the Santa Fe Bridge in downtown El Paso to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico; and finally in Tucson, Arizona.

On the run[link]

A fire broke out at the Hotel Congress in Tucson where members of the Dillinger gang were staying. Forced to leave their luggage behind, they were rescued through a window and down a fire truck ladder. Charles Makley and Russell Clark tipped a couple of firemen $12 to climb back up and retrieve the luggage, affording the firefighters a good look at several members of Dillinger's gang. The firemen later recognized Makley, Pierpont, and Ed Shouse while thumbing through a copy of ''True Detective'' and informed the police, who arrested Harry Pierpont, Charles Makley, Russell Clark, Ed Shouse and Dillinger at a second hideout without incident. They found them in possession of over $25,000 in cash and several automatic weapons. Tucson celebrates the historic arrest with an annual "Dillinger Days" festival, the highlight of which is a reenactment.

The men were extradited to Indiana, where Dillinger was held in the Lake County Jail in Crown Point for Officer O'Malley's murder in East Chicago, while the others were shanghaied to Ohio to stand trial for Sheriff Sarber's murder. Testimony by Shouse identified the five men as members of the Pierpont gang. The police boasted to area newspapers that the jail was escape-proof and posted extra guards to make sure. Louis Piquett, Dillinger's attorney, was able to sneak a wooden gun within the prison and into Dillinger's hand. Using it, he was able to trick a guard into opening his cell. He then took two men hostage, rounded up all the guards in the jail, locked them in his cell, and fled with another inmate, Herbert Youngblood. Before leaving, Dillinger said to the guards he locked up, "See what I locked all of you monkeys up with? Nothing but a little piece of wood. Well, so long, boys. I'll have to be moving on." Dillinger stole Sheriff Lillian Holley's new Ford car, embarrassing her and the town, and traveled to Chicago. In so doing, he crossed the state line in a stolen car, breaking the federal Motor Vehicle Theft Act. The crime was under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Investigation who immediately took over the Dillinger case after the car was found abandoned in Chicago. Dillinger's fellow escapee, Youngblood, went on his way, but was killed in a police shootout a few weeks later.

Dillinger was indicted by a local grand jury, and the BOI organized a nationwide manhunt for him. On June 10, 1933, the infamous John Dillinger committed his first bank robbery, taking $10,000 from the New Carlisle National Bank, which occupied the building which still stands at the southeast corner of Main Street and Jefferson Street (state routes 235 and 571) in New Carlisle, Ohio.

After escaping Crown Point, Dillinger began living with his girlfriend Evelyn "Billie" Frechette. They proceeded to Saint Paul, Minnesota, met up with "Red" Hamilton, and mustered a new gang, adding Baby Face Nelson, Homer Van Meter, Tommy Carroll, Joseph Fox, Joe Burns, James Jenkins, John Paul Chase, Charles Fisher, and Eddie Green. The landlord of their apartment became suspicious and on March 30, 1934, reported his suspicions to a federal agent. The building was placed under surveillance by the federal agents who soon determined Dillinger was in the apartment. When Van Meter was questioned, he opened fire on the agents before escaping behind a closed door. The entire gang then opened fire on the agents and fled out of a back entrance before back-up could arrive. They commandeered a truck and drove to Eddie Green's home. Dillinger was wounded in the escape and required medical attention. Federal agents later closed in on the building, and the gang opened fire as they escaped and split up. Eddie Green was killed in the escape. Dillinger and his girlfriend traveled to the home of Dillinger's father in Mooresville, where they remained until the wound healed. When Frechette returned to Chicago to visit a friend, she was arrested but refused to reveal Dillinger's whereabouts.

Dillinger returned to crime again. He and Van Meter robbed the police station in Warsaw, Indiana, stealing guns and bulletproof vests. After separating, Dillinger picked up Hamilton, who was recovering from a wound sustained in a heist in Mason City, Iowa. The two then traveled to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where they remained for a short time. Upon his return to Chicago, Dillinger again ran into the law in Port Huron, Michigan following a tip that he was checking in on one of his bootleging operations. Dillinger received a bullet to the left shoulder while avoiding capture. Dillinger received a tip that federal agents were headed there and left just days before they arrived.

Final months[link]

Little Bohemia Lodge[link]

In April, the Dillinger gang settled at a lodge hideout called Little Bohemia Lodge, owned by Emil Wanatka, in the northern Wisconsin town of Manitowish Waters. The gang assured the owners that they would give no trouble, but they monitored the owners whenever they left or spoke on the phone. Emil's wife Nan and her brother managed to evade Baby Face Nelson, who was tailing them, and mailed a letter of warning to a U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago, which later contacted the Division of Investigation. Days later, a score of federal agents led by Hugh Clegg and Melvin Purvis approached the lodge in the early morning hours. Two barking watchdogs announced their arrival, but the gang was so used to Nan Wanatka's dogs that they did not bother to inspect the disturbance. It was only after the federal agents mistakenly shot a local resident and two innocent Civilian Conservation Corps workers as they were about to drive away in a car that the Dillinger gang was alerted to the presence of the BOI. Gunfire between the groups lasted only momentarily, but the whole gang managed to escape in various ways despite the agents' efforts to surround and storm the lodge. Agent W. Carter Baum was shot dead by "Baby Face" Nelson during the gun battle.

The next day, Dillinger, Van Meter and Hamilton were confronted by authorities in Hastings, Minnesota. Hamilton was mortally wounded in the encounter. He was taken by Dillinger and Van Meter to see Joseph Moran, though Moran refused to treat Hamilton. He died in Aurora, Illinois on April 30, 1934. Dillinger, Van Meter and members of the Barker-Karpis gang buried him. Dillinger and Van Meter then met up with Carroll, and the three spent all of May in hiding. On June 7, the three had a shootout with authorities, and Carroll died in the encounter. Dillinger and Van Meter reunited with Nelson a week later and went into hiding.

By July 1934, Dillinger had dropped completely out of sight, and the federal agents had no solid leads to follow. He had, in fact, drifted into Chicago and went under the alias of Jimmy Lawrence, a petty criminal from Wisconsin who bore a close resemblance to the bank robber. Taking up a job as a clerk, Dillinger found that, in a large metropolis like Chicago, he was able to lead an anonymous existence for a while. What Dillinger did not realize was that the center of the federal agents' dragnet happened to be in Chicago. When the authorities found Dillinger's blood spattered getaway car on a Chicago side street, they were positive that he was in the city.

Cubs games[link]

Dillinger had always been a fan of the Chicago Cubs, and instead of lying low like many criminals on the run, he continued to attend Cubs games at Wrigley Field during the months of June and July 1934.

Woman in red[link]

Division of Investigations chief J. Edgar Hoover created a special task force headquartered in Chicago to locate Dillinger. On July 21 a madam from a brothel in Gary, Indiana, Ana Cumpănaş, also known as Anna Sage, contacted the police. She was a Romanian immigrant threatened with deportation for "low moral character" and offered the federal agency information on Dillinger in exchange for their help in preventing her deportation. The agency agreed to her terms. Cumpănaş told them that Dillinger was spending his time with another prostitute, Polly Hamilton, and that she and the couple would be going to see a movie together on the following day. She agreed to wear an orange dress, which is believed to have appeared red in the artificial lights of the theater, so that police could easily identify her. She was unsure which of two theaters they would be attending but told the agency their names: the Biograph and the Marbro.

A team of federal agents and officers from police forces outside Chicago was formed, along with a very few Chicago police officers. Among them was Sergeant Martin Zarkovich, to whom Sage had informed of Dillinger. Federal officials felt that the Chicago police had been compromised and could not be trusted, and Hoover and Purvis also wanted a Federal coup for their own reasons. Not chancing another embarrassing escape, the police were split into two teams. On July 22, one team was sent to the Marbro Theater on the city's west side, while another team surrounded the Biograph Theater at 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue on the north side. During the stakeout, the Biograph's manager thought the agents were criminals setting up a robbery. He called the Chicago police who dutifully responded and had to be waved off by the federal agents, who told them that they were on a stakeout for an important target.

Biograph Theater and death[link]

Dillinger attended the film ''Manhattan Melodrama'' at the Biograph Theater in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Dillinger was with Polly Hamilton and Ana Cumpănaş. Once they determined that Dillinger was in the theater, the lead agent (Samuel P. Cowley) contacted J. Edgar Hoover for instructions, who recommended that they wait outside rather than risk a gun battle in a crowded theater. He also told the agents not to put themselves in harm's way and that any man could open fire on Dillinger at the first sign of resistance. When the movie let out, Special Agent Melvin Purvis stood by the front door and signaled Dillinger's exit by lighting a cigar. Both he and the other agents reported that Dillinger turned his head and looked directly at the agent as he walked by, glanced across the street, then moved ahead of his female companions, reached into his pocket but failed to extract his gun, and ran into a nearby alley. Other accounts state Dillinger ignored a command to surrender, whipped out his gun, then headed for the alley. Agents already had the alley closed off, but Dillinger was determined to shoot it out. Agents Cowley, Charles Winstead, and Herman "Ed" Hollis opened fire, firing five shots. Dillinger was hit from behind and he fell face first to the ground. Two female bystanders took slight flesh wounds in the legs and buttocks by flying bullet and brick fragments. Dillinger was struck three times, with two bullets entering the chest, one actually nicking his heart, and the fatal shot, which entered the back of his neck and exited just under his right eye. Although three agents shot Dillinger, Winstead was believed to be the man who fired the fatal shot, and he received a personal letter of commendation from Director Hoover. An ambulance was summoned, though it was clear that Dillinger had quickly died from his gunshot wounds. At 10:50 p.m. on July 22, 1934, John Dillinger was pronounced dead at Alexian Brothers Hospital. According to the investigators, Dillinger died without saying a word. There were also reports of people dipping their handkerchiefs and skirts into the pools of blood that had formed as Dillinger lay in the alley in order to secure keepsakes of the entire affair. Dillinger's body was displayed to the public at the Cook County morgue after his death.

Dillinger was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery (Section: 44, Lot: 94) in Indianapolis. His gravestone has had to be replaced several times because of vandalism by people chipping off pieces as souvenirs.

1957: Director Don Siegel's film ''Baby Face Nelson'', starred Mickey Rooney as Nelson and Leo Gordon as Dillinger.

1959: ''The FBI Story'' starring James Stewart, Jean Willes plays Anna Sage and Scott Peters plays Dillinger. Peters, a small-time actor, went uncredited in this role.

1969: Director Marco Ferreri's film ''Dillinger Is Dead'' includes documentary footage of real John Dillinger as well as newspaper clips.

1973: ''Dillinger'', directed and written by John Milius with Warren Oates in the title role, presents the gang in a much more sympathetic light, in keeping with the anti-hero theme popular in films after ''Bonnie and Clyde'' (1967).

1979: Lewis Teague directed the film ''The Lady in Red'', starring Pamela Sue Martin as the eponymous lady in the red dress. However, in this film, it is Dillinger's girlfriend Polly in red, not the Romanian informant Anna Sage (Louise Fletcher). Sage tricks Polly into wearing red so that FBI agents can identify Dillinger (Robert Conrad) as he emerges from the cinema.

1991: A TV film ''Dillinger'', starring Mark Harmon

1995: Roger Corman produced the film ''Dillinger and Capone'', featuring Martin Sheen as Dillinger and F. Murray Abraham as Al Capone. Dillinger survives the theater stakeout when the FBI mistakenly gun down his brother and is then blackmailed by Capone into retrieving $15 million from his secret vault.

2009: Director Michael Mann's film ''Public Enemies'' is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough's book ''Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34.'' The film features Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis, but is inaccurate in some major historical details, such as the timeline of deaths of key criminal figures including Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson.

Christopher Thomas "Tommy" Howell (born December 7, 1966), known by his stage name C. Thomas Howell, is an American actor and film director. He starred in the films ''The Outsiders'' as Ponyboy Curtis and in ''The Hitcher'' as Jim Halsey. He has appeared in ''The Da Vinci Treasure'', ''Soul Man'', ''Red Dawn'', ''Secret Admirer'', ''Gettysburg'', ''H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds'', ''The Day the Earth Stopped'' and ''Gods and Generals''. He is scheduled to appear in 2012's ''The Amazing Spider-Man''.

Early life [link]

Christopher Thomas Howell, nicknamed either "Tommy" or "CT", was born on December 7, 1966, in Van Nuys, California, to Chris and Candice Howell. He has two sisters, Stacy and Candi, and a brother, John. His father worked as a stunt coordinator since Howell was six. As a young boy, Howell wanted to be a stuntman and was even a child stunt player. He began acting at the age of four, when cast in the ''Brian Keith Show'' in an episode called "The Little People".

When Howell was young his parents divorced, leaving his mother with both of her sons and daughter Stacy, and his father took Candi with him. Howell shared his time with each parent and started his career through his father's job. When he was twelve, he became a rodeo champion at the California Junior Rodeo Association and was named "All-Around Cowboy" in August 1979. While growing up, he also spent time golfing with his grandfather (where his nickname "CT" came because that's how he was recorded on screen boards).

Howell's showbiz debut was acting in the ''The Brian Keith Show'' episode "The Little People" as a little boy whose ears are being checked out by a doctor. When he got older, he tried stunt acting like his father and worked on commercials for a while. His first film appearance was in the 1977 made-for-television movie ''It Happened One Christmas''. Following the movie, he tried rodeo riding for a few years. In 1982 he was originally a child stuntman in Steven Spielberg's ''E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial''. Also in ET, he played a very minor role, Tyler, who appears in the very beginning of the movie and near the end as a bicycle rider. Afterward, due to his acting skills, he was cast as the lead role in Francis Ford Coppola's ''The Outsiders'', which earned him a Young Artist Award. Following ''The Outsiders'', he became a teen idol, appearing in teen magazines like ''Tiger Beat'' and ''16 Magazine'', which referred to him as "Tommy" and "Tom".

1980s [link]

In 1984 he and ''Outsiders'' co-star, Patrick Swayze, reunited for ''Grandview, U.S.A.'', also with Jamie Lee Curtis, and ''Red Dawn'' with Charlie Sheen and Lea Thompson. Howell also had a pivotal role in ''Tank'', with James Garner and Jenilee Harrison. In 1985 he again starred in the lead role in ''Secret Admirer'', opposite Lori Loughlin and Kelly Preston. Howell was one of two final actors in the running to play Marty McFly in ''Back to the Future'' the other being Eric Stoltz, who was eventually selected. Michael J. Fox would later go on to replace Stoltz after filming had begun.

In 1986 he played a hitchhiker's target in the film ''The Hitcher'', another of his successful movies. The sequel was released in 2003. Following that he starred as a white student who pretends to be black in the poorly received ''Soul Man''. In 1988 Howell played Arturo Toscanini in the story of the world renown conductor in Franco Zeffirelli's ''Il Giovane Toscanini'' with Irma Capece Minutolo and Elizabeth Taylor, which was one of his very first straight-to-video releases. Howell and Kelly Preston reunited as lovers in ''A Tiger's Tale''.

1990s [link]

At the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s, Howell appeared in ''The Return of the Musketeers'' and ''Side Out''. In 1993, he starred with Linda Fiorentino and Nancy Allen in the campy thriller ''Acting on Impulse''. After several straight-to-DVD features and a starring role in ''That Night'', he achieved success again in the movie ''Gettysburg'', which was popular with history buffs and history classrooms. He starred as Mike, a motorcycle courier in Mad Dogs & Englishmen (US title: Shameless) with Elizabeth Hurley. He started an interest in crime-thrillers after starring in ''Payback'' and playing serial killer Baby Face Nelson in a film of the same name. His made-for-television movie credits include ''Suspect Device'', ''Sealed with a Kiss'', ''Dads'', and ''Dead Fire''. He also appeared in the short-lived TV series "Kindred: The Embraced".

2000s [link]

Howell returned to the theater in the 2000s in movies such as ''Asylum Days'', the ''Gods and Generals'' prequel to ''Gettysburg'', and ''The Hillside Strangler'', playing a real-life serial killer. In 2004, Howell starred in ''Hoboken Hollow''. He also became a supporter of the production company The Asylum, which produced his straight-to-DVD movies.

In 2005, he starred as a man who gets separated from his wife and child in ''H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds'', one of three 2005 adaptations of the novel ''The War of the Worlds'' by H. G. Wells. Because of its success, Howell directed and starred in a straight-to-DVD sequel ''War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave'' in 2008, which was heavily criticized. In 2005, he also reunited with his ''Secret Admirer'' co-star Lori Loughlin, when he had a recurring role on her television show ''Summerland'' as Zac Efron's father. After ''War of the Worlds'', he later time directing unsuccessful straight to-DVD movies. Also, in 2008, he directed and starred in ''The Day the Earth Stopped'', a mockbuster intended to capitalize on ''The Day the Earth Stood Still''. For these reasons, 20th Century Fox have threatened legal action against The Asylum, but no action has yet been taken. He also appeared as a doctor in ''The Poseidon Adventure'' an adaptation of the 1972 film of the same name. Coincidentally, his father's first stunt co-ordination was for the original movie, though uncredited. He briefly hosted a show on KLSX later that year. He appeared in the Western ''The Pledge''.

The Tacoma band "Botch" made a song called "C. Thomas Howell as 'Soul Man'".

2010s[link]

Howell has been cast in ''The Amazing Spider-Man'' as a character called Ray. Further details about his character are being kept under wraps, but it is possible that he is playing Ray Cooper, a police officer who supports Captain George Stacy in the Spider-Man Comics.

Television work[link]

After filming ''The Outsiders'', Howell starred in his own television series ''Two Marriages'' as a rebellious teenager, which ended after four episodes, but letters of support got it back on air. Howell later expressed disappointment in the series, but eventually found the show more satisfying.

After ''Two Marriages'', Howell made guest appearances in shows like ''Moonlighting'' and ''The Hitchhiker''. In 2000, Howell played a doctor stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash in ''Amazon''. He initially turned down a guest role in ''ER'' after missing out on a role he wanted, but his wife signed him up after yet another offer. Following ''ER'', he guest appeared in ''24''. He appeared in five episodes of ''Criminal Minds'' on CBS as the serial killer George Foyet (The Boston Reaper, based on the Zodiac Killer).

Howell plays Dewey Dudek, a recovering alcoholic police officer, in the L.A. police drama ''Southland'' – 2009–2010.

In 2011, he guest starred on ''The Glades'' and he will star in ''Torchwood: Miracle Day''.

Off-screen[link]

Howell has worked with Francis Ford Coppola many times and in other areas of making motion pictures including writing, producing, and directing. In 1995, he wrote and directed ''Hourglass'', which starred him and Sofia Shinas. The following year, he helped produce ''The Big Fall'' and ''Pure Danger''. Howell did not write or direct another movie until 2004. He and his father co-wrote the made for television movie ''Hope Ranch'' and Howell produced the film as well. The film was a success and Howell went on to write and produce ''Blind Injustice'' the next year. Two years later he produced ''The Stolen Moments of September''.

Personal life[link]

In his single days Howell shared a place with his friend, Darren Dalton, with whom he co-starred in ''The Outsiders'' and ''Red Dawn''. From July 11, 1989, to sometime in 1990, Howell was married to actress Rae Dawn Chong, his ''Soul Man'' co-star. He then married Sylvie Anderson in 1992. They have three children, Isabelle (born February 17, 1993), Dashiell (born January 2, 1997), and Liam (born April 24, 2001). Isabelle appeared as Molly in ''Hope Ranch'', credited as "Isabelle Howell", and Dashiell played Howell's son Alex, in ''H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds'', as "Dash Howell". The family currently resides in Stevenson Ranch, California.

In 2008 Howell was a contestant in the reality game show, ''Celebracadabra'', on which celebrities performed magic tricks practiced by experienced coaches. The series began on April 27 and ended on June 12; Howell won and was named Greatest Celebrity Magician.
