Neil Rogers (November 5, 1942 December 24, 2010) was an American talk radio personality. Until his retirement on June 22, 2009, "The Neil Rogers Show" aired weekdays from 10am-2pm on 560 WQAM. It was consistently the top rated show in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale media market and had been since his Miami debut in 1976. Although he was not syndicated nationally or even regionally, ''Talkers'' magazine, the trade publication of talk radio, ranked Rogers at Number 15 on its 2006 list of the 100 most important personalities in the business. Rogers died at the age of 68 at the Vitas Hospice at Florida Medical Center in Broward County, Florida.

Career

Rogers was born Nelson Roger Behelfer in Rochester, New York. Growing up there, he amused himself by announcing his own play-by-play while watching baseball on television. His first job in radio was as a music disc jockey at a small station, WCGR, in Canandaigua, New York. He studied broadcasting at Michigan State University, but left shortly before he would have graduated to pursue his radio career.

Over the next decade, Rogers worked at several stations in several states, including New York, Michigan, and Florida, where he ended up at WJNO AM in West Palm Beach. Rogers subsequently lost his job in West Palm Beach and was headed to Yuma, Arizona when he called his mother from the road and learned that Miami-Ft. Lauderdale's WKAT (AM 1360) had offered him a job without application or audition. Rogers turned his car around and headed for Miami, debuting on WKAT on March 1, 1976. By the end of 1976, he was one of the top-rated radio personalities in the market.

Nine months later, when singer Anita Bryant began a crusade to repeal Dade County's ordinance banning discrimination against homosexuals, Rogers responded by announcing on the air that he was homosexual. Although Bryant's campaign to repeal the ordinance was successful, Rogers' admission did nothing to hurt his radio career; indeed, his ratings steadily increased with every Arbitron period.

When his contract with WKAT expired in 1979, Rogers remained in Miami but moved down the AM dial to 790, WNWS. By that time Rogers was unrivaled as the highest-rated talk-show host in Miami, dominating both the 18-24 and 25-54 demographics (the most coveted age ranges in the business). His style — unabashed liberal, steadfast conspiracy theorist, scatological, and funny but acutely mean when dealing with callers (especially elderly callers), a schtick that may best be described as caustically comic — was firmly established, making Rogers something of an icon in the market.

Rogers moved again in 1982, to Miami's WINZ. When he moved to mid-days on WINZ, his "Hallandale Vice" routine set the market and WINZ on fire. After years of agitating for an earlier time slot, WINZ's owner, Guy Gannett Publishing, moved him to mornings on co-owned WZTA (Zeta-4) in 1988. Although ratings in the morning were immediate, Roger's long simmering battle with station management boiled over, culminating with him moving to WIOD in the fall of 1989. From WIOD he was briefly simulcast in the Tampa Bay market on WSUN. His last relocation was to 560 WQAM in 1997. Regardless of his station, he was consistently the top rated personality in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale market, prompting one Miami radio executive to call him "the most consistent performer among men 25-54 that this market has ever seen." He also has a devoted audience in Europe and around the world who listen via the Internet.

He has been targeted from time to time by local activists who find him offensive; one, Jack Thompson, a former Miami attorney, unsuccessfully sued Rogers and his employers to remove him from the air. In 1989, the Hallandale City Commission voted to censure Neil Rogers for "offensive comments" that he had made about the elderly. Rogers had survived all such attacks, and indeed, many of them have increased his popularity.

It was announced on April 14, 2008 that Rogers agreed to a new 5-year contract on WQAM, which would have kept "Uncle Neil", as he was called by his fans, firmly on the air until 2013.

On the May 13, 2009 show it was announced but not confirmed that Rogers' longtime show producer and fill in host Jorge Rodriguez was being fired by WQAM in a cost-cutting measure. Rogers' contract includes the ability for him to choose his producer and no resolution was found by the end of the program even after Rogers called his agent on the air. Rodriguez's future with the show has been the topic of interest in the South Florida media including the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. Rodriguez's firing was confirmed by Rogers at the start of the May 14, 2009 program.

Rodriguez' firing drew great response from Neil's fans. Rodriguez later began his own show on SoFloRadio.com

Rodriguez was replaced by WQAM Deputy Program Director Lee "Flee" Feldman. Feldman stated that he is working on the Neil Rogers show without any increase in his salary.

It was announced on June 22, 2009 that Rogers and Beasley Broadcast Miami reached an agreement where Neil Rogers will no longer be featured on air at WQAM, but would consult for the station under a new agreement. Neil Rogers had retired from on-air radio.

Rogers, at age 68, had been suffering from several health ailments in the last months of his life. His friend and attorney Norman Kent says the radio host suffered a stroke and heart attack in October and his condition had been declining since Thanksgiving. He died on December 24, 2010 at the age of 68.

Ernesto Fritz "Mr. Perfect" Hoost (born July 11, 1965 in Heemskerk, North Holland) is a Dutch former kickboxer and four-time K-1 World Champion. He made his debut in 1993 at the K-1 World Grand Prix 1993, where he came just one win short of the world title. He announced his retirement on December 2, 2006 after the K-1 World GP Final tournament in Tokyo Dome, Japan.

Biography

Hoost's family is originally from Suriname. In 1993, in his first K-1 World Grand Prix, in quarterfinals Hoost defeated Peter Aerts by decision, knocked out Maurice Smith in semis and advanced to the tournament finals where he was knocked out by Branko Cikatic. Hoost got another shot at a title on December 19, 1993, when he won the K-2 World Championship, knocking out Changpuek Kiatsongrit in four rounds. This was the only time the K-1 organization held a K-2 tournament.

Hoost reached the K-1 World Grand Prix Finals again in 1995, but lost to Peter Aerts by a four round decision. He went on to win every fight the remainder of that year. In 1996, he lost at the K-1 World Grand Prix 1996 finals to Andy Hug by a four round split decision. He finally became K-1 World Champion in 1997 when he beat Hug by a three-round unanimous decision.

Hoost was unable to defend his title at the K-1 World Grand Prix 1998 tournament, being technically knocked out in the quarterfinals by Australian Sam Greco due to being unable to start the 3rd round after a cut above his left eye; he was mostly dominated in the fight by Greco, the latter however suffered a cracked left ankle for his troubles.

In 1999, Hoost won his second K-1 World Grand Prix title, beating Mirko Filipović by technical knockout in the third round. On April 23, 2000 he avenged his loss to Greco when he beat him by a technical knockout.

Hoost retained the K-1 World Grand Prix Championship title for third time in 2000 by defeating Ray Sefo. By then, many K-1 fans were hoping for a meeting between Hoost and Bob Sapp. Hoost returned to defend his crown in 2001 defeating Stefan Leko. However, he was forced to retire from the tournament due to an injured shin before the semi-finals.

The highly anticipated fight with Bob Sapp came at the K-1 World Grand Prix 2002 Final Elimination. Sapp won by a first round knockout after the doctor stopped the match on cuts. Despite the loss he was again matched up with Sapp in the quarter finals of the K-1 World Grand Prix 2002. After knocking Sapp down in first round, Hoost lost to Sapp again in a wild slugfest by second round KO.

After the fight however, Sapp had broken his hand and suffered four cracked ribs and wasn't able to continue, allowing Hoost to replace him in the semi-finals. Hoost beat Ray Sefo in first round by TKO, after Sefo damaged his shin against Hoost's kneecap. Hoost proceeded to his fifth K-1 Finals, and was matched up against Jerome Le Banner. The fight was competitive up until the third and final round when Le Banner injured his arm blocking Hoost's kick. Hoost aggressively attacked the arm, forcing Le Banner down twice more, winning by TKO and his fourth Grand Prix Championship. Le Banner suffered a severe compound fracture, putting him out of competition for over a year.

In addition to his Grand Prix titles Ernesto Hoost fought a number of Super fights. In 2004 he was again in the K-1 World Grand Prix 2004 finals, in which he lost to the eventual Grand Prix champion Remy Bonjasky.

In 2006, Hoost declared that he would fight his last tournament in K-1. In the K-1 World Grand Prix 2006, Hoost was defeated in the semi-finals by Semmy Schilt. An emotional Hoost was met with a standing ovation from the audience as he left the arena.

Hoost, who is well known in the Netherlands, is also a celebrity in Japan, where many of his fights have taken place. He has also fought in Australia, France and the United States, among other countries.

Hoost is well known for training "Knees of Fury" fighters Paul Slowinski (whom he is currently still training). Under his guidance Slowinski has won the K-1 tournament 2007 in Amsterdam. He has also trained leg strikes, wrestling, and other skills with PRIDE Champion Fedor Emelianenko.

Hoost was also present as a cornerman for UFC fighter Antoni Hardonk in Hardonk's UFC 85 bout with Eddie Sanchez, his UFC 92 win over Mike Wessel, and his UFC 97 loss to Cheick Kongo.

Hoost currently lives in the town of Hoorn, together with his wife and children.

Ernesto has starred in a batsu game, Silent Library edition of a Japanese variety TV show called ''Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!!'', the video of which has increased his popularity among internet denizens. In the episode he participated in, players sat in a library and flipped over cards in a Russian roulette manner. If a player's card revealed a batsu/skull and crossbones (instead of 'Safe'), then he must endure a punishment while keeping quiet (as they are in a library). Ernesto suffered three punishments: getting a nose hair plucked, having a balloon inflate then explode in his shirt, and having a baseball player swing at his behind with a bat.

Maurice Smith (born December 13, 1961) is a retired American boxer, kickboxer, mixed martial artist and former UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Biography

Kickboxing career

Smith won his first professional kickboxing title in 1983 for the World Kickboxing Council by defeating light heavyweight champion Tony Morelli by knockout in the seventh round. Later that year, he won the World Kickboxing Association heavyweight title from Travis Everett with a KO via low kicks. Smith then went ten straight years without a loss.

He also had a notable win in 1991 over Stan Longinidis who, at the time, was tearing through the ranks and was regarded as a super up and coming fighter. Maurice won this 12 round match by split decision after coming back from a knock down in the first round by Stan and surviving an early onslaught.

In 1993, Smith was invited to the K-1 Grand Prix '93 along with seven of the world's best light heavyweight and heavyweight kickboxers. Smith won his first match by defeating Japanese fighter Toshiyuki Atokawa in the quarter finals by unanimous decision. In the semifinals he met Dutch fighter and future K-1 legend, Ernesto Hoost, where after a hard fought battle Smith was knocked out by left highkick in the final round, ending his tournament.

Mixed martial arts career

After a stint in Japanese promotions Pancrase and RINGS, accumulating a 4-7 record, Smith joined Battlecade Extreme Fighting in 1996 to fight against the heavyweight champion Marcus "Conan" Silvira. Throughout the fight Maurice showed excellent use of the sprawl technique which negated the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter's attempts at takedowns. Smith then knocked Conan out in the third round with a kick to the head. In doing so, he became the Extreme Fighting Heavyweight Champion and became the first legitimate striker to win a top end MMA event.

He then defended his title in the fourth show against judo exponent Kazunari Murakami with a first round knockout. After the win, the company folded and Maurice joined the largest MMA promotion in the United States, the UFC.

Smith developed a close relationship with Frank Shamrock, who he met while training at the Lion's Den. Shamrock and Smith worked synergistically; Shamrock, a submission specialist, vastly improved Smith's ground game while Smith, in return, vastly improved Shamrock's striking. Smith and Shamrock eventually formed their own MMA team, called the Alliance.

At UFC 14 on July 27, 1997, Smith faced UFC Heavyweight Champion Mark Coleman in a title fight. Smith was considered to be a massive underdog for the bout, but shocked the mixed martial arts world with a unanimous decision victory to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship. With this win, Smith became the first striker to survive the attack of a world class wrestler. He then successfully defended his belt against David "Tank" Abbott winning via strikes due to leg kicks, before losing his belt to MMA legend Randy Couture by majority decision, in a close fight.

Return to MMA

On May 19, 2007 Maurice Smith had his first MMA bout in almost seven years when he defeated Marco Ruas by TKO at an International Fight League show held in Chicago. On February 23, 2008 at a Strikeforce event entitled ''Strikeforce: At The Dome'' held at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington, Smith defeated kickboxer Rick Roufus, who was making his MMA debut, by submission at 1:53 of the first round.

Maurice Smith was the coach of the Seattle Tiger Sharks of the International Fight League from 2006 to 2007. He is currently associated with ''Team Alliance''.

Rick Roufus (born June 3, 1966) is an American kickboxer, fighting out of The MMA Lab in Glendale, Arizona. He is one of the most famous kickboxers in the United States, and has also competed in boxing and mixed martial arts.

Roufus, nicknamed ''The Jet'', has been a six time full contact kick-boxing world champion winning two different weightclass titles under the IKF, International Kickboxing Federation Pro Full Contact Rules Light Heavyweight World Title at Caesars Tahoe Casino in Tahoe, Nevada, USA on January 22, 1994 and the IKF, International Kickboxing Federation Pro International Rules Heavyweight World Title on May 15, 1999 when he defeated Stan Longinidis of Boxhill, Victoria, Australia by TKO at the end of round 9 in Lowell Massachusetts, USA.

In the early 1990s, he announced he would change profession and turn to conventional boxing instead. He enjoyed some success as a boxer, winning the WBC's Continental Americas Cruiserweight title. He was never able to fight for a world championship as a conventional boxer however, and returned to kickboxing in the late 1990s. Roufus lost his ISKA. Full Contact World Light Heavyweight title by 11th round KO in the rematch to Ernesto Hoost in 1994. He added the K-1's United States championship to his six world titles in 1998.

He holds a record of 64-9-1 with 41 KO's in Kickboxing, 13-5-1 with 11 KO's in Pro Boxing and 5-5 in Pro MMA. One of his victories was over Mehrdad Khan Moayedi by TKO in the 3rd round on 3.4.2006.

Biography

Early life

Rick Roufus was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States of America on June 3, 1966. He started learning karate from his father who had learned taekwondo.

Kickboxing career

After he won some national titles of karate as amateur career, he debuted as a professional kickboxer. In the beginning of his career, he fought under the rule of Full contact where leg kicks, elbow strikes, and knee attacks were not allowed.

In January 1986, Roufus fought against Sylvester Cash for American national title of PKC at middleweight. He won this fight, and he got his first title.

In April 1987, he fought against John Moncayo for the world title of KICK at super middleweight. KICK means "Karate International Council of Kickboxing". Roufus knocked out Moncayo at 7R, and he won his first world title in his career.

In November 1988, he fought against Changpuek Kiatsongrit from Thailand. This was the first time for Roufus to fight under the ordinary kickboxing rule which allows leg kicks. At 1R, Roufus knocked down Changpuek twice with punches, but his legs started being damaged by Changpuek's kicks. As time goes on, Roufus started running away from Changpuek because of pain. At 4R, Roufus couldn't continue to fight because his legs were damaged heavily as Changpuek kept kicking them, and the referee stopped the bout when he fell down on the canvas. His both legs were broken and he needed time to come back.

In August 1989, he fought against Marek Piotrowski from Poland to defend his national title, but he lost by unanimous decision at the end of 10R, and failed to retain his title.

In April 1990, he had his first professional boxing match and fought against Ricardo Dabney, but he lost by decision at the end of 4R.

In January 1994, Roufus fought against Michael McDonald from Canada for the vacant title of IKF Professional Full contact at light heavyweight. He knocked out McDonald in 43 seconds at 1R, and he became the first world champion of IKF Full contact rule at light heavyweight.

Roufus shifted his focus to professional boxing again in 1995. After five consecutive wins, he drew with journeyman Louis Monaco in January 1996. In August, he challenged the vacant title of WBC Continental Americas at cruiserweight. He knocked out Sean McClain at 4R, and won his first and only title in boxing. In February 1997, he fought against Arthur Williams who became IBF world cruiserweight champion later for the vacant title of USBA at cruiserweight, but he was knocked out at 4R and failed to win his another title in boxing.

In 1998, Roufus was sanctioned as the first world champion of IKF Professional International rule at heavyweight as he requested to shift his title and he met IKF's conditions. In addition, Roufus got his first daughter in this year.

In May 1999, Roufus fought against Stan Longinidis from Australia to defend his IKF title. At the end of 9R, Longinidis suffered a broken bone in his foot so this bout was put into judges' decision. Consequently, Roufus was ahead on all 3 judges cards at the time, 89-81, 86-83 and 88-81, and he retained his title.

In November 2001, Roufus had a boxing match and fought against Dale Brown who was the North American and Canadian national champion, but he was knocked out at 9R, and this was his last match in boxing.

5-3-2002 in his rematch with Michael McDonald he tore his ACL (Knee). However, Roufus came back to fight, and defeat Maurice Smith, a year later.

On September 29, 2003 Roufus Officially announced his retirement to IKF and returned IKF his title, but he continued to fight in K-1 and MMA.

Shifting to mixed martial arts

Roufus, was to make his MMA debut against former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr at a WCO event in San Diego, California on January 12, 2008 at the San Diego Sports Arena, but was denied his application by the California State Athletic Commission.

In his MMA debut, Roufus lost to former UFC heavyweight champion Maurice Smith in the first round via kimura at the Strikeforce: At The Dome event in Tacoma, Washington on February 23, 2008 at the Tacoma Dome.

On March 29, 2008, Roufus had his second MMA bout, this time in Newkirk, Oklahoma for Caged Combat Championship Fights'(CCCF) "Battle on the Border" event. Roufus defeated Mike Buell via unanimous decision.

Since then he has won two more fights against BJ Lacy and Roberto Martinez bringing his mixed martial arts record to 3 wins with 1 loss.
