YALA, March 31 -- At least 14 people were killed and 450 wounded by car bombs at the Yala provincial seat on Saturday in one of the most serious violent attacks in the southernmost provinces. Pol Lt-Gen Paitoon Chuchaiya, chief of the Southern Border Police Operating Centre told reporters after inspecting the scene that there were two car bombs on Ruam Mitr Road in Yala municipality area. The muslim insurgents used two pick-up trucks as car bombs, he said, adding that the first location was at a shop named Rung Rueang which resulted in setting many cars on fire. The second bomb was opposite the first one, 150 metres away, in front of a motorcycle dealer shop. Fire from the bomb has damaged many cars and spread to a NGV-powered van which was 20 metres away. The van exploded and briefly caused misunderstanding among authorities that it was a third bomb. Police said the pick-up trucks were stolen from Pattani and Yala. The cost of damages could not yet be evaluated as many cars, motorcycles and homes along the road were damaged.
