Dore is a village in South Yorkshire, England. The village lies on a hill above the River Sheaf, and until 1934 was part of Derbyshire, but it is now a suburb of Sheffield. It is served by Dore and Totley railway station on the Hope Valley Line. It has a reputation of being Sheffield's wealthiest suburb, and Dore and Totley was the only ward of the city that regularly elected a Conservative councillor. However as of May 2008 all three councillors are Liberal Democrats. The Member of Parliament is Nick Clegg who is currently the leader of the Liberal Democrat Party and Deputy Prime Minister.

The name Dore derives from the same Old English root as door, signifying a 'gateway' or pass between two kingdoms.^[2] The Limb Brook, River Sheaf, and Meers Brook marked the boundary between the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Deira (later Northumbria) and Mercia.^[3]

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle contains the earliest written record of Dore, recording that in 827 (probably actually 829) King Egbert of Wessex led his army to the village to receive the submission of King Eanred of Northumbria, thereby establishing his overlordship over the whole of Anglo-Saxon Britain:

This year was the moon eclipsed, on mid-winter's mass-night; and King Egbert, in the course of the same year, conquered the Mercian kingdom, and all that is south of the Humber, being the eighth king who was sovereign of all the British dominions. Ella, king of the South-Saxons, was the first who possessed so large a territory; the second was Ceawlin, king of the West-Saxons: the third was Ethelbert, King of Kent; the fourth was Redwald, king of the East-Angles; the fifth was Edwin, king of the Northumbrians; the sixth was Oswald, who succeeded him; the seventh was Oswy, the brother of Oswald; the eighth was Egbert, king of the West-Saxons. This same Egbert led an army against the Northumbrians as far as Dore, where they met him, and offered terms of obedience and subjection, on the acceptance of which they returned home.^[4]

It can therefore be argued that Egbert became the first king of England at Dore. A plaque commemorating this event was erected on the village green in 1968 by the Dore Village Society. The Old School was built in 1821 on the site of a previous school, on the right hand side was the teacher's accommodation. When Dore's new school was opened, the Old School was restored and opened as a community centre.

Christ Church

Christ Church Dore was built in 1829 and Dore became a separate parish in 1844.^[5] Dore remained a small village, having a population of just 500 in the 19th century, until it was annexed by Sheffield in 1933.^[6]

A paper mill was built on Avenue Farm in the 17th century, Joshua Tyzack converted the building into a scythe forge in 1839 and in 1881 built a large house next to the forge as a country retreat, his initials can be seen above the front door. In 1932 Dore's Parish council built a memorial commemorating the deaths of World War I.

In modern times, Dore is most famous for the Laitner massacre of 1983, which led to the arrest and incarceration of killer Arthur Hutchinson.

Brinkburn Grange[link]

Brinkburn Grange was built in 1883 by Thomas B. Matthews. The land was part of Bradway Mill and Matthews was director of Turton Brothers & Matthews, a Sheffield steel, file and spring makers. The mill dam was then used as an ornamental lake. The Grange was demolished in 1938.

Schools in Dore include Dore Primary School, King Ecgbert School (secondary) and the Rowan Primary Special School.

Residents[link]

Notable residents include Gary Megson, a former footballer and manager of Sheffield Wednesday F.C., Dave Bassett, former footballer and former manager of Southampton F.C., Watford F.C., Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest F.C., and Chris Waddle, former England International and player with Sheffield Wednesday football club.

Former Sheffield United manager (and Manchester United player) Bryan Robson owns a penthouse in the village of Dore.

Former England footballer and Captain, the late Emlyn Hughes, lived in the village.

Michael Vaughan, of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and former captain of the England Cricket team, is a resident; Abbeydale Park, a former county cricket ground for both Derbyshire and Yorkshire, lies in the suburb.

Julien Doré (born July 7, 1982) is a French singer, winner of the fifth season of the television show Nouvelle Star, aired on the French Television M6 channel.

He is also the great-great-great-nephew of Gustave Doré, a well-known illustrator of the 19th century.

Life[link]

Doré was born in Alès (Gard, and grew up in Lunel. After taking his baccalauréat littéraire at the college Louis Feuillade, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts of Nîmes for five years. He is the founder of the group Dig up Elvis, with which he played in the bars of Nîmes. At that time, beer was the currency in which he was paid. In 2006, he created with Guillaume de Molina the project "The Jean d'Ormesson disco suicide", "protean group" which covered pop and disco hits. In June 2007, Doré was voted #1 in French Elle Magazine's "15 Sexiest Men" poll. He used to date Louise Bourgoin (ex-TV presenter on Canal+ channel) but they have been separated since March 2009.

New Star[link]

Doré was selected at the time of the casting in Marseille, where he presented himself with a ukulele. At the beginning, he only participated in the casting to get free publicity for his band. He convinced the jury when he sang "A la faveur de l'automne" (originally by Tété). His most memorable performances and revelations were while singing "Moi... Lolita" (Alizée) and "...Baby One More Time" (Britney Spears), dance music songs, in acoustics. He won the finale against Tigane.

Musical Collaborations[link]

Doré performed the song Umbrella with French-Canadian artist Cœur de pirate live in many concerts. In 2009, he also recorded a duet with Cœur de Pirate of her song, "Pour un infidèle." A video was released to promote the song, showing the two as a 1960's-era celebrity couple.^[3]

Also in 2009, Doré recorded the song "Helsinki" with French singer Mélanie Pain.

Doré also collaborated with French chanteuse Sylvie Vartan on her 2010 album release, Soleil bleu.^[4]

Career[link]

Dore spent three years co-hosting Rogers Television's Daytime. For his work, creativity and quick improv skills, he received the Impression Award for best on-air personality in 2001.^{[citation needed]}

Dore started his stand up career at Yuk Yuk's Ottawa new talent nights.^{[citation needed]}

Dore is most recognized for his part on CTV's Canadian Idol as the former correspondent reporting on the pressures and excitement of the contest with his unique brand of humour.^{[citation needed]} Dore has also appeared on his own Comedy Now! special for CTV and The Comedy Network, and was featured on the A Channel's comedy special Toronto Laughs. His show, The Jon Dore Television Show, can be seen on The Comedy Network in Canada, and on the Independent Film Channel in the United States. In July 2008, Dore appeared on Comedy Central's stand-up show, Live at Gotham along with several other comedians.

In 2010, he appeared in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Dore has toured in both Canada and the United States.

In March 2011, he hosted Funny as Hell on HBO Canada^[2], a show featuring edgy, politically incorrect, alternative, or musical comedy acts.

On November 11, 2010, he was the first featured comedian on Conan.

On June 2, 2011, he was interviewed on Victoria BC's The Zone radio station where he made mention of a "The Jon Dore Television Show Movie".

Dore Gold (Hebrew: דורי גולד‎, born 1953) is an Israeli statesman who has served in various diplomatic positions under several Israeli governments. He is the current President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. He also served as an advisor to former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his first term in office.

Early life[link]

Dore Gold was born in 1953 in Hartford, Connecticut, in the United States, and was raised in a Conservative Jewish home. His primary education was spent at the Orthodox Yeshiva of Hartford^[1] In the 1970s, Gold attended Northfield Mount Hermon School (Class of 1971) and then enrolled in Columbia University. There Gold earned BA and MA in Political Science, and then a PhD in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies.^[2]

He studied literary Arabic and specialized in International Law, and his doctoral dissertation was about Saudi Arabia. This research later formed the foundation for his 2003 New York Times bestseller, Hatred's Kingdom: How Saudi Arabia Supports the New Global Terrorism. In the book, Gold argues that Saudi Arabia actively funds terrorism by supporting the enemies of the U.S. and attacking its allies.^[3] Today, Gold lives in Jerusalem with his wife, Ofra, and his two children, Yael and Ariel.

Career[link]

Dore Gold's political career began in 1985 when Gold served as senior research associate at Tel Aviv University's Moshe Dayan Centre for Near East Studies. Later, he was appointed Director of the U.S. Foreign and Defense Policy Project at the Jaffee Centre for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University.

Peace Negotiations[link]

In 1991 Gold was an advisor to the Israeli delegation at the Madrid Peace Conference. From June 1996 to June 1997 he served as Foreign Policy Adviser to former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.^[4] During the period in which Benjamin Netanyahu served as the head of the Israeli opposition, Gold was instrumental in forging the relationship between the Likud Party leadership and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in response to the strategic ties that were growing between Israel's Labor government and the PLO under Yasser Arafat. Gold accompanied Netanyahu to meetings with the Jordanian leadership in 1994 and 1995 in London, Amman, and in Aqaba. As the Foreign Policy Adviser under Netanyahu after the 1996 elections, Gold worked with the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Jordan and others in the Arab world. He was also involved in negotiations leading up to the Hebron Agreement and the Note for the Record.

East Jerusalem and the Oslo Accords[link]

Gold himself has not written about the period in which he served as an envoy to the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world; nonetheless, a number of revelations have been disclosed by other authors. According to Barry Rubin and Judith Colp Rubin, Gold and Netanyahu advisor Yitzhak Molcho were the first envoys of the newly-elected Likud government to meet with Yasser Arafat in the Gaza Strip on June 27, 1996.^[5] Dennis Ross relates to the "Abu-Mazen-Dore Gold" talks that ensued afterwards as a result of which the Palestinians closed down offices in East Jerusalem that Israel had argued were a violation of the Oslo Accords.^[6] This was the price that Arafat had to pay for his first meeting with Netanyahu. It was a hard concession for the Palestinians, according to Ross, for it was viewed by them as a "symbolic retreat on East Jerusalem."

Syria and the Golan Heights[link]

On the Syrian negotiating track, former Israeli ambassador to the US, Itamar Rabinovich, describes how he concluded with Gold an understanding over the Monitoring Group for Southern Lebanon, which was followed by a direct discussion between Gold and the Syrian ambassador to the US, Walid Muallam.^[7] According to the French journalist, Charles Enderline, Gold secured a commitment from Secretary of State Warren Christopher that the Rabin "deposit" on the future of the Golan Heights did not bind the State of Israel. This effort also included obtaining a new US commitment from the Clinton administration to the September 1975 Ford letter, in which it was stated that the US would give great weight to Israel remaining on the Golan Heights.^[8] According to the Israeli Hebrew daily, Maariv, Christopher wrote this re-newed commitment in a formal letter of assurances to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on September 19, 1996.^[9]

Ambassador to the United Nations[link]

From 1997 to 1999 Gold was the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations. In 1998 Gold served as a member of the Israeli delegation at the Wye River negotiations between Israel, the PLO, and then U.S. President Bill Clinton at the Wye River Plantation in Maryland.

Later life[link]

Since 2000 Gold has served as president of the non-profit institute, Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. From 2001 to 2003 Gold served as an advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, most notably at the Aqaba Summit with President George W. Bush. During this period, Gold regularly appeared on US network television programs on behalf of the Sharon government, including Meet the Press, The Today Show, CNN's Late Edition, as well as on Fox and Friends. In July 2003, Gold testified as an expert before the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs on Saudi Arabia's alleged role in providing ideological and financial support for international terrorism.

Measures Against Ahmadinejad[link]

Since 2006 Gold led an international effort by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs to advocate that UN member states take legal measures against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran on grounds that he violated the anti-incitement clauses of the 1948 Genocide Convention, with his repeated statements about "wiping Israel off the map." Gold led a delegation to a conference held jointly with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations at the New York County Bar Association on December 14, 2006. Speakers included former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, Prof. Alan Dershowitz of Harvard Law School, and the US ambassador to the UN John Bolton. Senator Hillary Clinton sent a letter of support to the conference.

Gold led an Israeli delegation to a second conference at the British House of Commons on January 25, 2007 which was chaired by Lord David Trimble and supported by members of the British Labor Party and the Conservative Party. Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joined the Israeli team. As a result of this effort, over 60 members of the House of Commons called for the indictment of Ahmadinejad. A third event organized by Gold and the International Association of Genocide Scholars was held on September 23, 2008 in Washington D.C. Speaking at the third conference was Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, former US ambassador to the UN, as well as Salih Mahmoud Osman, a member of the Sudanese Parliament and advocate for human rights in Darfur.^[10]

The Doha Debates[link]

In April 2009 Gold participated in the Doha Debates at Georgetown University in Washington DC, where he debated against the motion "this house believes that it is time for the USA to get tough on Israel" with fellow speaker Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz. Speakers for the motion were Avraham Burg, former Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel and former Speaker of the Knesset and Michael Scheuer, former Chief of the CIA Bin Laden Issue Station. Gold and Dershowitz lost the debate, with 63% of the audience voting for the motion.^[11]

Debate with Justice Richard Goldstone[link]

Brandeis University invited Gold to debate Justice Richard Goldstone on November 5, 2009. The subject was the U.N. Gaza Report. Jeff Jacoby wrote in the Boston Globe on November 7: "Dore Gold, Israel's former ambassador to the U.N. brought facts and figures, maps and photographs, audio and video in English, Arabic, and Hebrew. Last night's encounter marked the first time Goldstone publicly debated the report's merits with a leading Israeli figure. It would not surprise me that he is in no hurry for a second." In the Israeli daily, Maariv, Ben Dror Yemini wrote on November 7: "The former Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. was prepared and articulate in the debate." Goldstone refused to debate with any more Israelis for at least two years afterwards.^{[citation needed]}

Appearing at the International Criminal Court in the Hague[link]

Ambassador Gold was invited to attend a roundtable meeting at the office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the Hague, held on October 20, 2010. A total of eight specialists appeared and submitted papers. They discussed the Palestinian Authority's declaration on January 22, 2009 recognizing the jurisdiction of the ICC, in accordance with an article in the Rome Stature, normally reserved for states. The PA was seeking the implicit recognition of the ICC Prosecutor that it already was a state.

Phillip Lim (born 1973 in fashion designer of Chinese ancestry.^[1] He was awarded the 2007 Council of Fashion Designers of America Emerging Talent in Womenswear award for his work as creative director of 3.1 Phillip Lim.^[2] He worked at the label Development from 2000 to 2004, and has been the head of 3.1 Phillip Lim which launched in the fall of 2005 to present.

For the line's fall 2006 collection,^[4] Lim aimed to "inject some 'street elegance'" into his designs. Laird Borrelli of Vogue praised his work as a "pretty-but-cool clothes" that "don't try too hard".

Lim's spring 2007 collection,^[5] His first runway show was praised as "lovely" by Nicole Phelps of Vogue, who said Lim proved himself to be an "accomplished tailor". His clothes were romantic and predominantly white, with occasional navy and floral elements. Phelps noted Lim's "knack for combining the dressy and the casual", saying that "Lim knows how fashionable women want to dress".

The line's fall 2007 collection was inspired by socialite Edith Bouvier Beale and meant to embody what Lim called "pedigree minus prudence".^[6] In what Phelps described as Lim's "most ambitious collection by far", Lim showed prep-school plaids and debutante-inspired dresses.

For his Resort 2008 collection,^[7] Lim revisited his standby motifs.

His fall 2009 was inspired by the youthquake of the 60s in England. Lissie Trullie's band performed live on his runway.

In its fifth year the brand -known for its effortlessly chic and youthful elegance -has seen immense critical and commercial success with stores in L.A. New York, Seoul, Tokyo.
