LB863 APPROVED! Nebraska FINALLY has an incentive for filmmakers!

LB863 APPROVED!

Congratulations to the entire Nebraska film community and a special thanks to all who participated in our decade-long quest to bring film production incentives to our state.

Today, our hero Senator Colby Coash saw his LB863 approved on Final Reading by a unanimous 44-0. Assuming that the Governor will sign the bill it will become law this summer.

Let's not have illusions. This is a modest incentive that will yield modest results.

Producers can only use the incentives in municipalities that have established local economic development funds; Omaha and Lincoln have not.

There is no guarantee that a city has to give an incentive. A producer will need to compete with other film and non-film projects for the limited funds.

But it is a first step...and "zero to something" is the biggest acceleration that any movement can achieve.

BLOOD RITES- Chad, Dorothy, and Andy's feature, at the ROSS April 5th

From the ROSS Website- http://www.theross.org/event.php?eid=571
FREE SCREENING: BLOOD RITES
Thursday, April 5 - 7:00 p.m.

Lincoln filmmaker group, Unfiltered Entertainment, presents a premiere screening of their new horror movie “Blood Rites”. This event is open to the public. Tickets are free but cannot be reserved.

“Blood Rites” was produced in Lincoln with local actors and crew from Lincoln, Omaha and UNL. It is heavily influenced, in both story and visual style, by Italian giallo films like “Deep Red”, “House by the Cemetery” and “Don’t Torture a Duckling”. Shot in HD and presented in 5.1 Surround Sound, “Blood Rites” represents the growing abilities of Nebraska filmmakers to create professional quality features outside of the traditional film industry.

LB863 Was Prioritized and Will Be Debated on the Floor of the Legislature!

We have great news to share with all of the supporters of the Nebraska Film Association who support bringing more film productions to state of Nebraska! The Urban Affairs Committee voted 7-0 to make LB863 their Committee Priority Bill: List of Priority Bills This is what that means practically speaking:

The bill will definitely come up for debate on the floor of the Legislature.

It needs 25 votes to pass.

Strategy-wise, we will need you as supporters to do the following:
Thank all the members, particularly Sen. McGill (Chair) for prioritizing the bill. All of them voted to do so, so all of them should be thanked. The more goodwill they have behind them from the industry, the more likely they will be to speak up and defend the bill vocally on the floor. Here is a list of the members: Urban Affairs Committee
Start contacting non-Committee member Senators, especially your own district's Senator. These points should be included in the message:

DeadLantern needs crew for a feature film this summer in Lincoln!

Hey all! We'll be looking for crew members (lighting, sound, location managers, etc.) to help out on our feature film this summer. Lincoln area availability preferred. Please e-mail any resumes to Mat@DeadLantern.com Thanks!

LB863 advances out of Urban Affairs committee- Feb 2, 2012

A message from the Nebraska Film Association, sent on behalf of President, Mark Hoeger:

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!

As you may have heard Senator (our hero) Colby Coash's LB863 was advanced out of the Urban Affairs committee by a UNANIMOUS vote.

As a supporter and promoter of increased film production in Nebraska, Feb 2nd was a big day.

Your steadfast commitment to this cause is finally paying off. This is the way it works in the Legislature; even good ideas take a few years to get fully vetted.

We think now we have the right Bill, with the right champion, at the right time, but we are still have several laps to complete before the finish line.

THE CURRENT STATE OF LB863

The bill has advanced out of the committee but before it can even come to a vote, Speaker Mike Flood will need to find a place on the packed agenda for a floor debate.

Realistically, especially in a short session, that will only happen if someone prioritizes the bill.

Greetings filmmakers, screenwriters and film enthusiasts,

Saturday evening, February 11th from 6:00pm to 11:00pm, come check out the beautiful North Sea Films building and visit the Omaha Film Festival folks to discuss the upcoming Seventh Annual Omaha Film Festival. There will be plenty of time to socialize and meet filmmakers, screenwriters and actors to discuss upcoming projects, and we’d like to take some time to talk about some festival specific topics.

For those in attendance, we will be unveiling our list of films for the first time to the general public, so this is your chance to be the first to know! As you know, we show some of the best independent feature films, documentaries, short films, animated shorts, and OFF the EDGE films every year, and we’re very excited about the films that we’ve chosen to showcase this year.

AN UPDATE ON THE LEGISLATIVE FRONT (sent on behalf of Mark Hoeger)

Dear Friends of Nebraska Films,

Our hero, Senator Colby Coash, has come up with an new plan to encourage film production in Nebraska.

The legislation is LB863 and the hearing is in front of the Urban Affairs committee; the hearing will take place this Tuesday, January 31 at around 1pm at the Capital in Lincoln.

We at the Nebraska Film Association are optimistic (guardedly) about this particular Legislative Bill's chances of passage because it addresses the objectives of the opposition.

In the past, opponents of film incentives have successfully (but we think inaccurately) argued that the State should not spend scarce resources to promote an industry with dubious returns for Nebraska's economy.

However, LB863 gets around this objection by simply stipulating that film production is an industry that qualifies for local incentives already offered to other industries and paid directly by individual cities and villages.

Looking for Actors

Hello,

I have been involved in this group since its beginning, and have found a lot of great resources here!

I work at UNL in the Pesticide Education Office and each year we do video projects to help train pesticide applicators on different topics. Many of these we do in dramatization form and are seeking actors! A few years ago I had a project that I posted here and got a lot of great response!

There will be projects coming down the pike this year and I am looking to establish a list of potential actors. I have started a group on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/groups/295888337130814/ as a one stop shop for updates about upcoming projects. I also maintain an email list for those who may not have Facebook.

Hello. I'm the lead singer in a local hard rock/ alternative metal group in Omaha called Vitosus. We have music to offer to those producing any sort of independent film, documentary, soundtrack etc. We just recorded a 5 song EP entitled 'Conflicted' that was produced and mixed by former Stone Sour producer Tom Tatman at Catamount Studios in Cedar Falls, IA. Our tracks are available online via iTunes, Amazon mp3, and CD Baby. If you'd like to hear a sample, a few of our songs are available on our websites. www.facebook.com/vitosus or www.reverbnation.com/vitosus

If you think you'd be interested in using a track or several, don't hesitate to contact us at vitosus@live.com.
All we'd ask is that you list us in your credits stating band, song played, and our album.

I have great respect for those that are out there trying to create something artistic, and if I can help by offering music to those who might need it then it's a win-win for everybody.

Omaha Film Festival - "New York Says Thank You" screening 9/8/2011

Thursday, September 8 · 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Great Escape Omaha Stadium 16
7440 Crown Point Avenue, Omaha NE

The Omaha Film Festival is proud to announce a screening of the amazing documentary "New York Says Thank You"

The film features scouts from the Little Sioux Boy Scout Ranch that was devastated by a tornado in 2008. Come and be inspired by this incredible film and share the evening with many of the scouts that were there.

Synopsis:

In 2003, a five-year-old New York child had an idea to help children he'd never met. That spirit of generosity inspired New Yorkers to drive cross country to donate toys and other goods to families affected by disastrous wildfires in Southern California—a cathartic way of giving back to their fellow citizens the same kind of extraordinary compassion and support they themselves received after 9/11....
