Welcome to Motorizado for a new video about the USS Wasp (LHD-1) is a United States Navy multipurpose amphibious assault ship, and the lead ship of her class. She is the tenth USN vessel to bear the name since 1775, with the last two ships named Wasp being aircraft carriers. She was built by the Ingalls Shipbuilding division of Litton in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Wasp and her sister ships are the first specifically designed to accommodate new Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) for fast troop movement over the beach, and Harrier II (AV-8B) Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) jets which provide close air support for the assault force. Deep sea explorers discover WWII aircraft carrier USS Wasp
Deep sea explorers found the USS Hornet in the South Pacific earlier this year. CBS News was onboard the research ship when robot submaries discovered the wreck. Now, we are learning the USS Hornet was not the only World War II aircraft carrier located on that expedition. Mark Phillips reports.

USS Wasp (CV-7) - The Baby Yorktown
The seventh carrier of the United States Navy is the topic of today's video. A compromise design from the outset, Wasp is one of the prime examples of how the various interwar naval treaties limited navies. Of how ships could suffer for trying to meet impossible tonnage limitations for what was expected of them.
And yet, for all of that, Wasp would prove to be an incredibly successful ship, in the short time she actually served. If in roles that her designers certainly didn't anticipate for her.

The Wreck of USS Wasp - Burnt and Scarred, But Still (Mostly) Intact
While generally the least known of the American fleet carriers lost in WW2, USS Wasp has one of the most interesting wrecks. Her hull broke, like the others, but it remained together on the bottom. Leading to such things as a flat hull, leading into an angled break.
Moreover, the severe fires she suffered left their mark...without rusting away. Making her the almost unique case of a wreck with visible scorch marks, even after decades beneath the surface. And, of course, there's the typical 'deepwater American wreck' level of preservation.
Wasp is a ship that was ignored in her life, and I want to make sure she isn't ignored in her death, as well.

Destruction of the USS Wasp by Japan’s Top Submarine Ace.
The Allied landing on Guadalcanal on 7 August had caught the Japanese by surprise, so there were no Japanese submarines in the area. The Japanese quickly rectified their initial lack of submarines in this sector.
By the end of August 1942, nine Japanese submarines were patrolling the area south and southeast of Guadalcanal. One of these subs was commanded by a man that would become Japan's top sub ace, his name was Takaichi Kinashi and he commanded I-19. At 10:45 on 15 September he had a report of an allied convoy hedging in his direction. Soon Kinashi saw numerous smoke stacks on the horizon. He dived and set I-19 on an intercept course with the convoy.
As Kinashi looked through his telescope, he could see a large convoy escorted by carriers, battleships and numerous destroyers. He fir...

USS Wasp an amphibious assault ship Action
The US sent a fighter-jet-carrying warship to join drills near the disputed Scarborough Shoal for the first time, sending a pointed message to China as tensions simmer over territorial claims in the region. The USS Wasp an amphibious assault ship outfitted last year with F-35B jets joined the annual Exercise Balikatan with the Philippines this month. A ship matching the USS Wasp’s description was spotted in waters “near the Scarborough Shoal,” a feature occupied by China since a tense standoff in seven years ago, the Philippines’ ABS-CBN News reported Tuesday.

He fired his salvo of six torpedos and dived as deep as he could to try and avoid detection. Although Kinashi didn't know it at the time, this would become the most destructive salvo in submarine history. Within the space of a few minutes Kinashi would half the number of operational fleet carriers available to the U.S. navy and badly damage America's newest and most powerful battleship.
