Owen Vincent Dodson (November 28, 1914 – June 21, 1983) was an American poet, novelist, and playwright. He was one of the leading African-American poets of his time, associated with the generation of black poets following the Harlem Renaissance.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, USA, Dodson studied at Bates College (B.A. 1936) and at the Yale School of Drama (M.F.A. 1939). He taught at Howard University, where he was chair of the Drama Department, from 1940 to 1970, and briefly at Spelman College and Atlanta University. James V. Hatch has explained that Dodson "is the product of two parallel forces—the Black experience in America with its folk and urban routes, and a classical humanistic education."
Dodson's poetry varied widely and covered a broad range of subjects, styles, and forms. He wrote at times, though rarely, in black dialect, and at others quoted and alluded to classical poetry and drama. He wrote about religion and about sexuality—he was gay, though he was briefly engaged to Priscilla Heath, a Bates classmate. One critic describes him as "a brilliant, gay man who discovered his sexual preference early in life, but who was nevertheless unlucky and unhappy in several ill-fated relationships."
Scott Matthews, is a singer/songwriter from Wolverhampton, England.
His first album Passing Stranger was released on 13 March 2006 on San Remo Records before being re-released on Island Records later in the year. Janice Long was the first of the BBC DJs to play his music. Soon, tracks from Passing Stranger were also being played by Mark Radcliffe and Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2. In April, Scott played sessions on BBC Radio 2 & BBC 6 Music.
Matthews' first single "Elusive" was released in September. The single received much airplay from BBC Radio DJs Jo Whiley, Dermot O'Leary, and Zane Lowe. Between 7–10 August, Lowe played "Elusive" once each night as his chosen Single of the Week. Matthews also visited the station to perform "Elusive" and other songs from the album in May and August 2006. In May 2007, he won the Ivor Novello Award for "Best Song Musically and Lyrically" for "Elusive".
Matthews notes amongst his influences a number of artists, most notably The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Marc Bolan, and Joe Satriani.
Maureen Kathleen Stewart Forrester, CC OQ (July 25, 1930 – June 16, 2010) was a Canadian operatic contralto.
Maureen Forrester was born and grew up in Montreal, one of four children of Thomas Forrester, a Scottish cabinetmaker, and his Irish-born wife, the former May Arnold. She sang in church and radio choirs. At age 13, she dropped out of school to help support the family, working as a secretary at Bell Telephone.
When her brother came home from the war he persuaded her to take singing lessons. She paid for voice lessons with Sally Martin, Frank Rowe, and baritone Bernard Diamant. She gave her debut recital at the local YWCA in 1953. She made her concert debut in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Otto Klemperer.
She toured extensively in Canada and Europe with Jeunesses Musicales. She made her New York City debut in Town Hall in 1956. Bruno Walter invited her to sing for him; he was looking for the right contralto for a performance and recording of the Mahler Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection". This was the start of a warm relationship with great rapport. Walter had been a student of Mahler, and he trained Forrester in interpretation of his works. She performed at Walter's farewell performances with the New York Philharmonic in 1957.

Robert Fleming's song cycle "The Confession Stone (Songs of Mary) are settings of poems by Owen Dodson. This cycle became one of the works most frequently performed by Maureen Forrester. John Newmark is again her accompanist. In fact, it is said that Newmark himself was the person who gave Fleming the idea of composing these poems for Forrester. This is from a live recital at the Montreal Expo, 1967. 1. Oh, my boy Jesus 2. Don't pay attention to the old men 3. Jesus, did you know 4. There's a supper in Jerusalem tonight 5. This reading is ripped directly from an LP I found called "Treasury of 100 Modern American Poets" with Randall Jarrell, John Berryman, Owen Dodson, Jean Garrigue, Ruth Stone, and Hollis Summers. There is no pressing date on the sleeve but Berryman is listed as not yet deceased as the date of his death, 1972, is left blank (1914 - *blank* ). Leading me to believe it must have been pressed before his suicide. I think this may be one of the only (if not the only) digitized recordings of this reading (the date and location of the reading remains unknown, though he sounds surprisingly sober). In the Shadow of the Capitol was aimed at preserving the history and memories of the African-American intellectual and professional community in Washington, DC, between the 1922 dedication of the Lincoln Memorial and the 1963 "I Had a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. The program culminated in a symposium at the Folger Shakespeare Library that brought some of that era's greatest luminaries to the attention of new audiences. In this segment, actress and professor Juanita Fletcher moderates a panel that includes Owen Dodson, May Miller, and Anne Cook Reid.
Judas, Peter, Pilate, Caiaphas, and John – these are the names most often heard in the stories we hear during Holy Week….the men who failed Jesus or who conspired against Jesus, their names we hear during this holiest of weeks. But what of the women who stood by Jesus, who wept for Jesus, who bore witnesses to the betrayal, the trial, the execution, and the death of Jesus. Where are their stories during this week of weeks? For centuries, the church has failed to listen to the voices of the women whose lives were intertwined with Jesus’ life. The stories of these faithful women have been hidden in the mists of time. This Palm Sunday we turned to one of those women; to Mary the mother of Jesus. Her voice has been silenced by the church. She has been confined to works of art that speak not wi...

Participações de David Hatcher Childress, Jason Martell, Aidan Dodson, Brian Appleyard, Seth Shostak, Tom Van Flandern, Tobias Owen, Mary Peterson e Lyssa Royal Holt.
