What is ALS ? Teacher Wayne Lampe has this disease.
ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a neurorological disorder that attacks the motor neurons that enable communication between the brain and control of a person's voluntary muscles. No one knows the cause of ALS. There are many researchers with different theories. There is no cure. In 50% of people the average life span is 3-5 years after diagnosis. Only 8% live over 10 years and there is even a question on quality of life for many are on permanent ventilation. No two cases are alike. Progression can be rapid, and then it can level off, and then start again.I will use an example with something almost common to everyone these days, a cell phone. When you have a good connection, you can speak and hear the other person clear from coast to coast. You can do this because of the network of towers across the nation. With ALS, the motor neurons are the towers. They stop receiving signals and they control the muscles. The body still finds way to get through to muscles but it is delayed. It is like calling from Florida to California, but by way of New York, Chicago, Denver then Los Angeles. People cannot live without water and muscles cannot not live without communication. Once the motor neuron that controls a muscle group stops receiving messages, the muscles in that area die. It is like you experience bad spots with your phone.

Stem Cell Implications for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
At Johns Hopkins, researchers and doctors are working together to explore the impact of stem technology on ALS. The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins has helped uncover new genes for familial ALS, researched nerve repair, worked actively on genetic risk factors, developed a variety of animal models for testing therapies, explored ALS biology, advanced stem cell therapy, and researched ways to counter muscle atrophy.

Surviving ALS # 3 - with Dr. Bob Melamede
We flash foward to 2006 to learn from Robert Melamede, PhD, Biology Professor at the University of Colorado, exactly what marijuana does for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and other degenerative nerve diseases, like Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Dr. Melamede describes the unique role of the body's own Endo-Cannabinoid system as a "homeostatic regulator" keeping numerous body systems in balance - including the immune, digestive, reproductive, cardio-vascular and neuromuscular systems. Dr. Melamede sees the plant-based Cannabinoids in marijuana as a suppliment - to help the Endo-Cannabinoid system achive balance during biological,bio-chemical or other stresses, "The use of Cannabis has a profound effect in helping to stop nerve degeneration and helping to restore functional nerves". He also recommends Hemp Oil, rich in Omega 3 & 6 EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids), to give the body the tools it needs to achive health. Then, back to May of 2000 (14 years with ALS), at home in Parrish, Florida, Cathy Jordan demonstrates how Cannabis helps her to have a great quality of life, while she and her family enjoy her heated pool. Please visit Cathy's website: www.alsandcannabis.com For more videos & info on medical marijuana, visit www.youtube.com View an excellent presentation by Professor Melamede on the "Holistic Biochemistry of Cannabinoids" at: video.google.com from 2004 Clinical Conference on Cannabis Therapeutics, hosted by Patients Out of Time: www.medicalcannabis <b>...</b>

Stand Up Exercise for Immobile ALS person
Medical Benefits of Standing Passive standing has been demonstrated to prevent, reverse, or improve many of the adverse effects of prolonged immobilization. The most widely accepted medical benefits of standing include: Prevention of contractures (ankles, knees, and hips) Improvement of range of motion (spine, hips, knees and ankles) Reduction in spasticity Prevention or reversal of osteoporosis and resultant hypercalciuria Improvement of renal function, drainage of the urinary tract, and reduction in urinary calculi Prevention of pressure ulcers through changing positions Improvement in circulation as it related to orthostatic hypotension Improvement in bowel function Normalization of respiratory function Other specific reasons that people stand include: Facilitation of a natural symmetrical standing posture Development & improvement of upper body balance & strength Alleviation of pain caused by prolonged or inappropriate position Development of standing tolerance & endurance Lessening progressive scoliosis Maintenance of bone density Psychological Benefits of Standing Although funding sources rarely recognize the psychological benefits of standing, they can be some of the most important reasons to stand.

The Longest Way 1.0 - one year walk/beard grow time lapse
Nov.9th 2007 - Nov.13th 2008 // one year on foot // 4646km through China // unlimited beard & hair growth // Homepage: http://www.thelongestway.com // Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CRehage // musical score by The Kingpins (http://www.myspace.com/theoneandonlykingpins) and Zhu Fengbo
Additional info:
- I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking for now.
- All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi has been completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
- I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.
- Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.
- The songs I used in the video are 1) Zhu Fengbo - "Olive Tree" and 2) The Kingpins - "L'aventurier" - visit the Kingpins website if you want to know more, they are very cool I think.
- This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.
- The core of this project is in fact my website "http://www.thelongestway.com" where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.

One Day on Earth - Motion Picture Trailer
To See to latest screening locationsplease visit: www.onedayonearth.org/movietickets
ONE DAY ON EARTH creates a picture of humanity by recording a 24-hour period throughout every country in the world. We explore a greater diversity of perspectives than ever seen before on screen. We follow characters and events that evolve throughout the day, interspersed with expansive global montages that explore the progression of life from birth, to death, to birth again. In the end, despite unprecedented challenges and tragedies throughout the world, we are reminded that every day we are alive there is hope and a choice to see a better future together.
Founded in 2008, ONE DAY ON EARTH set out to explore our planet’s identity and challenges in an attempt to answer the question: Who are we?
Please help us tell this story: 101010donate.org
Many thanks to the contributors of One Day on Earth, Vimeo, Ning, United Nations, and the 60+ non-profits for making this happen.

ALS - Hug
ALS or also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), is the most common form of motor neuron disease. It is a progressive and ultimately fatal neuromuscular disease. ALS causes nerve cells to degenerate. The voluntary muscles weaken and become immobile. ALS leaves the senses unimpaired and the intellect is often unaffected. The video was taken from ALS Society of Canada. www.als.ca

ALS Life
www.indiegogo.com New Film In The Works Hi this is Shelby speaking just wanted to let you all know that this video is not scripted it is 100% real. The woman in the bed is my mother and that is me taking care of her. She has had ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) since I was two years old, so that's 16 years now. I am making this video to get a message out about ALS, trying to show people what it can do and how to deal with it. My mother should have passed on 2 years after she was diagnosed but her strong spirit and will to live and watch her babies grow up is why she is with us today. Many people don't know what ALS is so from my personal experience this is what I know: It's a progressive disease that attacks your then immune, muscular and respiratory system. My mom first was put on a ventilator to breathe for her then slowly her immune system was weakend and muscles deteriorated. Just imagine every muscle in your body from your tounge to your throat all the way down to wiggling your toes not working, and not being able to speak. That is what it is like for her today. We do have ways of communicating with her by her blinking her eyes for yes and stretching them open for no. I dont want you all to feel sorry for me, I want you to look at your own lives an re-evaluate the abilities you have and use them in the best way possible while you still can.
