Watch more Earth Focus at www.linktv.org An original investigative report by Earth Focus and UK's Ecologist Film Unit looks at the risks of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale. From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains? Marcellus Shale contains enough natural gas to supply all US gas needs for 14 years. But as gas drilling takes place, using a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," toxic chemicals and methane gas seep into drinking water. Now experts fear that unacceptable levels of radioactive Radium 226 in gas development waste. Fracking chemicals are linked to bone, liver and breast cancers, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, developmental as well as brain and nervous system disorders. Such chemicals are present in frack waste and may find their way into drinking water and air. Waste from Pennsylvania gas wells -- waste that may also contain unacceptable levels of radium -- is routinely dumped across state lines into landfills in New York, Ohio and West Virginia. New York does not require testing waste for radioactivity prior to dumping or treatment. So drill cuttings from Pennsylvania have been dumped in New York's Chemung and other counties and liquid waste is shipped to treatment plants in Auburn and Watertown New York ...

Please visit our web site: www.CleanTV.com Here's a breaking news story about a huge discovery of methane gas reserves. The good news is that all this gas could help meet the world's growing energy needs. The bad news is this methane is burping up into plumes from the arctic ocean into the atmosphere from holes in the ice that are 3000 feet across. That's a lot of gas from one hole. But unfortunately there are many more that just one hole. Russian scientists say they have discovered thousands of these holes emitting methane plumes from the arctic shelf. According to Igor Semiletov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, methane gas is 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Semiletov has studied these methane plumes for years but most of that time they were only about 30 meters in diameter. Semiletov said, "We carried out checks at about 115 stationary points and discovered methane fields of a fantastic scale — I think on a scale not seen before." But with these methane bubbling holes having expanded to nearly one mile wide with no end to their expansion in sight , he is more than just a little bit concerned. The question is, "Should we be concerned?" EDITOR'S NOTE While we espouse a conservative Judeo-Christian worldview and we neither condone the radical environmental movement advocating such things as valuing animals more than humans, nor do we agree with most of the junk science used to foment fears about global warming, however we do have to acknowledge that there may ...

President Obama announces that Osama bin Laden has been killed by US special operation forces. Key quotes from the President: "Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body. "As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not --- and never will be --- at war with Islam. I've made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity."

www.euronews.com North Korea has announced it will put a satellite into orbit next month to mark the 100th anniversary of founder Kim Il-Sung's birthday. The satellite will be launched using a long-range rocket and goes against a United Nations ban in place since North Korea's last rocket launch in 2009. Pyongyang claims it has already launched two experimental satellites for peaceful purposes, though many suspect they are disguised missile tests. This latest rocket will blast off between April 12-16, and will be part of massive celebrations planned to mark the former leader's centenary on April 15. Kim Il-Sung was the father of Kim Jong-il, who died in December, and the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong-Un. Just over two weeks ago, Pyongyang agreed to suspend long-range missile tests as part of a deal to receive 240000 tonnes of food aid from the United States. Hamid Karzai, the Afghanistan president, has said he will accept the opening of a Taliban office in Qatar for the purpose of holding peace talks. If the United States insists that the armed group establish a liaison office in Qatar, "we are agreed", Karzai said in a presidential statement on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Kabul recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations over reports that the Taliban was planning to open an office in the gulf country. As the 2014 deadline for the US led forces to pull out nears, there has been a growing need to engage the Islamists for a durable peace in the country. It has been identified that a proper address for Taliban will help facilitate the talks. The US and its NATO allies have been pursuing a war against the Taliban, but the armed group remains a force to be reckoned with, despite a decade of war. One complication to negotiations with the Taliban is that many Afghans still view them with suspicion and say they should answer for their past crimes. Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports From Kabul.
