Pinworm Dangers
It’s the most common type of worm infection in the United States, and it’s not head lice. Health experts say pinworms are usually found in children who then pass it on to adults.
Dr. Pierre Loredo, a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System, says washing your hands will lower your risk for a pinworm infection. “Pinworms are small, threadlike, white worms. They’re about a third to a half an inch long.”
Pinworms are three times more common than head lice. “What happens is you’ll have it in kids, especially kids in crowded areas such as your preschool or your daycare. But then what happens is it’s contagious and the parents pick it up,” said Dr. Loredo.

Pinworms or Threadworms. This video is on Pinworm medicine, treatment, symptoms, home remedies to get rid of threadworms.
Threadworms (Pinworms) are common but are not usually serious. Threadworms infect the gut and lay eggs around your anus which causes itch. Treatment usually includes medication plus hygiene measures. Medication kills the worms but not their eggs, which can survive for two weeks. Therefore, you also need strict hygiene measures for two weeks after taking medication to prevent you from swallowing eggs which may cause a new infection. All household members should be treated at the same time, including those without symptoms.
HOW TO SPOT THREADWORMS (PINWORMS):
Threadworms are small, thin, white, thread-like worms between 2 mm and 13 mm long. They infect human guts (intestines). Worms in kids are common but anyone of any age can be affected. Feel free to click the links below for images to help you spot them,
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/threadworms/
https://patient.info/health/itchy-bottom-pruritus-ani/threadworms
ARE THREADWORMS (PINWORMS) HARMFUL:
Not usually. Often, the worst thing about them is the itch and discomfort around the back passage (anus). This sometimes wakes children from sleep. Scratching may make the anus sore. Large numbers of threadworms may possibly cause mild tummy (abdominal) pains and make a child irritable. In girls, threadworms can wander forwards and lay their eggs in the vagina or urethra (the tube through which you pass urine). A doctor may check for threadworms in young girls with a vaginal discharge, bedwetting, or problems with passing urine. Rarely, threadworms can cause other problems such as loss of appetite and weight loss.
THREADWORMS (PINWORMS) TREATMENT:
You can buy medicine for threadworms from pharmacies. This is usually a chewable tablet or liquid you swallow called Mebendazole.
Treat everyone in your household, even if they don't have symptoms.
Always have a consultation with your pharmacist to make sure you’re suitable to take any medication and so they can also give you some useful tips.
Tell the pharmacist if you need to treat a child under 2, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding or get frequent recurrences of threadworms. Treatment might not be suitable and you may need to speak to your doctor.
Mebendazole works by preventing the threadworms absorbing sugar so they should die within a few days. The medication is 90-100% effective but it doesn’t kill the eggs which is why strict hygiene measures are required.
HYGIENE MEASURES:
• Wash hands and scrub under fingernails – particularly before eating, after using the toilet or changing nappies
• Encourage children to wash hands regularly
• Bathe or shower every morning
• Rinse toothbrushes before using them and keep them in the cupboard.
• Keep fingernails short
• Wash sleepwear, sheets, towels and soft toys (at normal temperature)
• Disinfect kitchen and bathroom surfaces
• Vacuum and dust with a damp cloth
• Make sure children wear underwear at night – change it in the morning
• Do not shake clothing or bedding, to prevent eggs landing on other surfaces
• Do not share towels or flannels
• Do not bite nails or suck thumbs and fingers
HOW DO THREADWORMS (PINWORMS) SPREAD:
Threadworms spread when their eggs are swallowed. They lay eggs around your anus, which make it itchy. The eggs get stuck on your fingers when you scratch. They can then pass on to anything you touch.
Eggs can then pass to other people when they touch these surfaces and touch their mouth. They take around 2 weeks to hatch.
Children can get worms again after they've been treated for them if they get the eggs in their mouth. This is why it's important to encourage children to wash their hands regularly.

Loredo.
Pinworms are usually passed in crowded areas with children like parks and preschools. If a child touches a contaminated toy, toilet seat, even clothing, they could be at risk for a pinworm infection. “A child swallows or inhales a pinworm. The eggs hatch in the intestine. The female lays eggs in the perianal region. A child scratches that region and now their hands are transmitted,” said Dr. Loredo.
Scratching is the most common symptom. “To find out if your child has it you could place a clear adhesive tape on the anus of the child in the morning and pull the tape off and look for thread like worms,” said Dr. Loredo.
If the child has pinworms there are treatments available. “You want to treat all family members. And you want to go ahead and treat again 14 days later should the symptoms reoccur. Then you want to wash the sheets, clothes, anything that could be contaminated,” said Dr. Loredo.

Pinworm Infection is the most common worm infection in the United States. It affects children at higher rates than adults, but it is highly contagious, so once a kid in your home is infected, there is a good chance you will also be infected. Pinworm Infection is spread from person to person.
The female pinworm lays eggs at night (the eggs are sensitive to light). These eggs live in the flaps of human skin around the anus, causing infection. When a human scratches the infected area, the eggs get stuck under fingernails and spread around to other surfaces. If you spread eggs to a piece of food you're about to eat, you can also get infected by ingesting the eggs. Is there a home remedy?
Most people don’t have any symptoms after they’re infected, but some severe infestations can lead to serious medical complications. People who live in unsanitary and crowded areas are at a higher risk of Pinworm Infection.

Pinworm, seat worm, threadworm, itchy butt worm, enterobius vermicularis or oxiuris are all names of one intestinal worm that infects school children at a certain age (between 5 and 15) and it can cause a lot of trouble for them.
The children who go to school get infected and then go back home and infect the other family members and then go back to school again and infect other children. So there’s the vicious circle of infection happening around the house and the school. Maybe even the parent would infect their colleagues at work or friends, and so on. So, dealing with that worm will have to involve mass treatment of the house and the school at the same time.
That worm lives in the intestines of the infected person and actually we get infected with the egg of the worm by eating contaminated food or touching contaminated surfaces and then putting our hands in our mouth. Now, what happens next is that the worm comes out of the egg inside the intestines, in the form of larva. Larvae are very small worms. And then, they hang on the inside wall of the intestines and then grow up to be fully grown worms. In this case they can immigrate to the outside of the anus, around the anal area. So, from the rectum and the anus area you will find the adult worms laying eggs at night. And that causes the symptoms. The child will probably have nightmares about snakes crawling on them. That’s a sign that this could be an infection with a pinworm. So the problem’s that the child will wake up at night crying and itching around the anal area. And what you will see, maybe, if you check the anus at night, you might find these little worms around the anus. Sometimes you won’t see them. Some parents would take a torch and check around the anal area like this. Some other parents would take a tape and go around the anal area and stick it around the anal area like this and will see the little worms on the tape. So in fact these worms come out and have eggs laid around the anus and also might have an effect on the vaginal area of girls, so sometimes you’ll have vaginal discharge or inflammation around the vagina of the girl and then you are worried that there might have been any form of sexual assault on her. Please make sure that it’s not this pinworm.
On the underwear of the children, on the towels, on the bed sheets and especially on the toilet seats and on everything they touch with their little hands, especially their toys, all these toys can be affected with the eggs of the worm. The biggest cause of the spread of the infection is actually having long nails. So, the child has to have always very short nails and also other members of the family, the mother especially. So, you have to be careful that this should be a ritual, that you’re always clipping your child’s nails. Now we have the problem of itching at night, that might cause nightmares, and it might cause insomnia, and then the child would go to school not having had enough sleep, and this could affect their educational process. So, you will have to make sure that your child is having a good night’s sleep. How can you do that? As soon as your child cries and complains of the itching there’s an idea to use zinc oxide cream or Nivea cream, any thick cream. Take a little bit of it and put it around the anal area and a little bit inside the anus or around the infected area or inflamed area. Just put the cream around this area, like this. In this case, the worm will get kind of trapped into the cream and will not cause this irritation of the skin anymore. So, that’s a good way to make your child sleep peacefully.
Sometimes children will suffer from bed wetting because of that, so don’t get angry at them, make sure that they don’t have that infection.
And now, let’s see what we should do around the house to prevent the infection from happening and re-happening. First of all, prevent autoinfection. Autoinfection means to infect yourself. So, the child would scratch around the anus and then go eat something, the eggs are inside the nails, and then the eggs come inside again and have new worms. So, what you need is ...
