Offspring of Echostar Satellite L.L.C., and founded by Charlie Ergen, his wife Candy and their friend Jim DeFranco as a satellite television equipment distributor in 1980, DISH Network was officially branded in March 1996. This branding came after the successful launch of its first satellite, Echostar I in December 1995 and marked the beginning of the company offering subscription television services. The company has since launched numerous satellites, with 14 owned and leased satellites currently in its fleet.
, DISH Network split from Echostar, with each entity becoming a separate company. Echostar is the key technology partner to DISH Network, which focuses only on marketing and providing satellite television service.
, the company competes primarily with satellite rival DirecTV and with cable television providers, but telecommunication companies' development of fiber-optic lines has increasingly become competition for the company. The company is a Fortune 200 company.
On December 28, 1995, EchoStar successfully launched its first satellite, EchoStar I. With this and the completion of the construction of the satellite uplink center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, The Dish Network brand name was born to represent the home satellite TV service. In March, 1996, the company made its first broadcast to customers.
In 1998, EchoStar purchased the broadcasting assets of a satellite broadcasting joint venture of News Corporation's ASkyB and MCI Worldcom. With this purchase EchoStar obtained 28 of the 32 transponder licenses in the 110° West orbital slot, more than doubling existing continental United States broadcasting capacity at a value of $682.5 million. The acquisition inspired the company to introduce a multisatellite system called Dish 500, theoretically capable of receiving more than 500 channels on one Dish. In the same year, Echostar, partnering with Bell Canada, launched Dish Network Canada.
In January 2005, EchoStar bought the broadcasting assets of the troubled HDTV satellite provider Voom, including its Rainbow 1 satellite co-located with EchoStar 3 at 61.5° West. On April 29, EchoStar announced that it would expand its HDTV programming by adding the first 10 of 21 original Voom channels and mirror the channels on a CONUS slot. Dish Network added CNN HD in Spanish along with other packages in its Latino HD lineup. www.dishmexico.com
On January 1, 2008, the company completed its spinoff of its technology and set top box business into a separate publicly traded company, Echostar Corporation ("Echostar"), effectively splitting the original Echostar into two separate businesses. Dish Network Corporation, the larger of the two resulting companies, focuses on programming, service and marketing of satellite television, while EchoStar Corporation runs a majority of the satellite fleet and other signal infrastructure. While neither company has any ownership in the other, the majority of the voting power of the shares in both companies is owned by Charlie Ergen.
On June 2, 2009, Dish Network began airing free monthly concerts on channel 101. An exclusive deal was reached between Dish Network and CMT to offer "CMT Front Row", programming featuring country music stars and concerts. The monthly concerts are available in HD.
On December 10, 2009, Dish Network announced that it passed the 14 million customer milestone; adding more net customers than any company in the multichannel video distribution business.
On January 6, 2010, Dish Network introduced TV Everywhere - a unique suite of integrated products designed to maximize the convenience and ease of watching TV anytime and anywhere. Key components of TV Everywhere(TM) include the TV Everywhere Adapter; the ViP(R) 922 set-top box—the world's only DVR with built-in Slingbox technology — the new DISH Network WiFi HD Monitor; and the newly-released DISH Remote Access app.
On January 7, 2010, Dish Network partners with NeuLion to distribute live international TV channels through IPTV platform.
On February 3, 2010, Dish Network introduces Tetris TV, a interactive TV game service with Oberon Media and The Tetris Company.
On June 3, 2010, Dish Network introduced Free HD for Life. This deal requires an agreement and autoPay with paperless billing.
On August 24, 2010, Dish Network introduced DishOnline.com, the first online video portal that integrates live TV.
On October 6, 2010, Logitech announced that it would offer its new Google TV powered set top device, the Revue, to Dish Network subscribers.
On November 10, 2010, DISH Network L.L.C. announced that DISH Network's Google TV solution is now available to customers. DISH Network's Google TV solution, which requires a DVR integration service, includes the Logitech Revue with Google TV, a small set-top box.
On April 6, 2011, DISH Network won Blockbuster Inc. in a bankruptcy auction in New York, agreeing to pay $322 million in cash and assume $87 million in liabilities and other obligations for the nationwide video-rental company.
On June 20, 2011, Joseph Clayton assumes day-to-day control of the company.Clayton is the former head of Sirius Satellite Radio and since 2008 has served on the board of directors of Ergen’s other company, EchoStar Corp.
On June 21, 2011, all standard definition channels were hidden from the Dish Network guide, except for the channels that do not have an HD channel, for subscribers with certain HD receivers and can be viewed through guide display options. Standard definition programming remains on the lineup for those with SD-only receivers and other HD receivers.
After EchoStar obtained the broadcasting assets of a failed joint venture between ASkyB and MCI WorldCom, it had more than doubled its capacity by adding 28 transponders at the 110°W orbital location. Since EchoStar also owned the adjacent 119°W orbital location it developed the Dish 500 to receive the signals of both orbital locations using one Dish and an innovative dual-LNB assembly. Although the new 20-inch Dish 500 was slightly larger than the then-current 18-inch Dish 300 and DirecTV Dishes it had the distinct advantage of obtaining signals from EchoStar's two adjacent satellite locations for a theoretical 500-channel capacity. The Dish 500, as a result, provided very large capacity for local-into-local service, nationwide programming, and business services. In order to migrate existing customers to Dish 500, Dish Network provides value-added channels in addition to local channels that can only be received with the Dish 500 and newer systems. Some of these channels exclusive to these newer systems are History Channel International, Boomerang, The Science Channel, Planet Green, and Comedy Central.
During Dish Network's quest for capacity, they had accumulated an array of satellite broadcasting technologies, orbital locations, and surplus capacity using non-mainstream technologies requiring larger Dish sizes. To capitalize on these broadcasting assets, Dish Network started providing extensive ethnic programming from lower-powered satellites broadcasting in the non-DBS portion of the FSS band. Dish Network offers specialized equipment for these customers including larger Dish antennas.
The SuperDish, Dish 500+, and Dish 1000+ systems receive DBS signals from both of the primary 110°W and 119°W locations (129°W for Dish 1000+) as well as lower-powered FSS signals from either 121°W, 105°W, or 118.75°W. The Dish 500+ and 1000+ systems receive circularly-polarized signals in the non-DBS portion of the FSS band—the only American satellite television service to do so.
Both a standard receiver and a receiver with built-in digital video recorder (DVR) are available to subscribers. The Dish Network ViP722 HD DVR (Record up to 350 hours of standard-definition (SD), up to 55 hours of high-definition (HD) replacement to the ViP622 has received generally positive reviews from CNET and others.
Both a standard receiver and a DVR (digital video recorder) are available to subscribers for an upgrade fee. Beginning in January 2010, Dish Network charges $6.00 as a DVR service fee, which covers cost of licensing EPG (electronic program guide) from ''TV Guide''.

Dish Network began negotiations with GTN (Gay Television Network) to carry the channel. GTN sent out a press release on February 2, 2001, announcing its launch and that its channel would be carried by Dish Network. Dish Network responded by denying that any contract had been signed and that the press release was premature. The president of GTN responded by calling Dish Network "homophobic". In April 2002, Dish Network signed a contract to carry GTN, renamed to Triangle Television Network, then Q Television Network. Dish Network now offers the Logo channel (HD only) in an add-on package (Platinum HD) along with 10 other HD channels for a $10 monthy fee.
Dish Network has recently been in several disputes in some markets to carry their local channels.
The next day, ESPN announced they will fight the lawsuit and said in a press release: "We have repeatedly advised Dish that we are in full compliance with our agreement and have offered them a distribution opportunity with respect to ESPNU and ESPN Classic consistent with the rest of the industry. We will not renegotiate settled contracts and will vigorously defend this legal action, the apparent sole purpose of which is to get a better deal."
Dish Network moved ESPNU from its "America's Top 250" package to its "America's Top 120" package on September 30, 2009. However they claim it has nothing to do with the lawsuit.
On June 22, 2010, The Walt Disney Company (owner of ESPN) pulled ESPNews HD, Disney Channel HD, Disney XD HD and ABC Family HD from the Dish Network channel list although the standard definition channels remained.

Deep Dish is a duo of DJs and house-music producers consisting of Iranian-American members Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi. Based in Washington, D.C., Shirazinia and Tayebi are well known for providing house or dance remixes of tracks of famous stars such as Madonna, Cher and Gabrielle, and for their live DJing sets. They often collaborate with DC artist Richard Morel and produced a dance hit with his song "True (The Faggot is You)". Their remixing abilities first came to attention with their seminal 1995 remix of De'Lacy's "Hideaway," a club classic. Other collaborations include "The Future of the Future (Stay Gold)" with British group Everything But the Girl, which appeared on Deep Dish's artist album ''Junk Science'', which was released in 1998.
Deep Dish have remixed tracks by artists such as Dido ("Thank You" and "Stoned") and the collaboration between Timo Maas and Kelis ("Help Me"). The duo won a Grammy Award for their "Thank You" remix. Deep Dish have also collaborated with Danny Howells to remix the Eminem track "Without Me" (as a bootleg). In July 2005, their second artist album, ''George Is On'', was released. It featured their Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart hit "Flashdance" (which features Anousheh Khalili) (also their biggest UK hit, peaking at number 3), as well as a remake of the classic Fleetwood Mac song "Dreams", for which Stevie Nicks provided new vocals. "Say Hello", the second single released from the album, hit number one on the dance chart in September 2005, becoming their second dance chart-topper (their first being the collaboration with Everything But the Girl in 1998). They also made a successful remix of Justin Timberlake's song "Like I Love You" back in 2003. Although it only charted in the US, it was even more successful than the original version of the song (which only charted at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100) and became their very first #1 in the US, which propelled them to popularity in a country where they had never previously had any chart placing at all: indeed it was only the fourth song (and the fourth chart anywhere that they had had a single in) that had charted anywhere.
In 2005 the film ''It's All Gone Pete Tong'' included Raul Rincon's remix of "Flashdance". Deep Dish has appeared as the featured artist on the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix on several occasions. Their most recent appearances took place in 2008, on the 28th of March, when their set from the Winter Music Conference was broadcast live on the show. Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia was featured on the Essential Mix in September 2007. Deep Dish is also well-known for their progressive house compilation albums in the famed Global Underground series. The latest Global Underground album, by Dubfire, was released in April 2007.
They also own and run dance music record labels ''Deep Dish'', ''Yoshitoshi'' Shinichi, and ''Yo''. In addition, they owned and operated a retail store (also named ''Yoshitoshi'') in the Georgetown area of DC, which sold dance records and clothing. The store closed in 2003, although their labels continue to release music, mostly on the 12 inch single vinyl format.
In August 2009, Sharam was featured on the Essential Mix and his mix was subsequently voted the best of 2009.

Maksim Aleksandrovich Chmerkovskiy (, ''Maksym Oleksándrovych Čmerkovsʹkyj'', ; ; born January 17, 1980) is a Latin Ballroom dance champion, choreographer, and instructor. He is best known as one of the professional dancers on the American television series ''Dancing With The Stars'', on which he first appeared in season two. He most recently partnered with actress Kirstie Alley. On May 24, they were announced as the runners-up. He is also known for appearing on the reality show "Holostiak," a Ukrainian version of "The Bachelor."
The challenges of immigration for Chmerkovskiy and his family included financial and language barriers. A skiing accident as a child broke Chmerkovskiy's right leg. Doctors informed him that there would be difficulties with his leg and that dancing might not be possible. He made a successful recovery and went on to become a professional Latin Ballroom dancer.
Chmerkovskiy owns four dance studios in the New York City area, one of which is the Rising Stars Dance Academy (RSDA). The other three studios are social dance studios located in Ridgefield, New Jersey, and Glen Head, New York, as well as the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan. He has been a resident of Edgewater, New Jersey.
Chmerkovskiy is one of the creators and directors of Dance Team USA, a non-profit educational and charitable organization dedicated to recruiting, supporting, and training future DanceSport participants. This sport is particularly popular with Eastern European families. Through his company Maksim Chmerkovskiy Productions, he organizes performances globally.
A ballroom and DanceSport choreographer, among his professional works is the Wynn Las Vegas's water-based show ''Le Rêve''. He implemented ballroom-inspired numbers in the Franco Dragone production.
He returned for the show's 7th season, this time paired with two-time Olympic volleyball gold medalist, Misty May-Treanor. Chmerkovskiy and May-Treanor were forced to withdraw from the competition in Week 4 on October 6, 2008. During a practice for their jive, May-Treanor ruptured her Achilles tendon and required surgery. Her withdrawal gave them a finish in tenth place.
On February 9, 2009, on ''Good Morning America'' it was announced that he would be paired with Denise Richards for the eighth season of ''Dancing With the Stars''. They were eliminated second in the competition, on March 24, 2009, giving the pair a finish of 12th place. In the ninth season, he was paired with actress Debi Mazar, during which they were eliminated 4th. In season 10, Chmerkovskiy, returning for his 8th season, was partnered with Erin Andrews. They ended up coming in 3rd place during the two hour finale on May 25, 2010.
For season 11, Chmerkovskiy partnered with singer and actress, Brandy. They made it to the semi-finals but were eliminated on November 16, 2010, giving them a 4th place finish. For Season 12, he was paired with actress, Kirstie Alley. On week 3, his leg gave out causing the couple to fall, earning 21 out of 30. The next week, Alley's shoe fell off during their routine. Judge Carrie Ann Inaba called Alley ''The Queen of the Unexpected Mishap''; they earned 22 out of a possible score of 30. They made it to the finals and finished in second place.
