~~ Review Script ~~
Foolishly marketed as a bucket-list comedy adventure, this movie is actually just about bird-watching, or "birding" for the entire 101-minute runtime. But with big names like Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson, even such a limited, and sometimes uninteresting subject matter could still be an engaging, and humorous film. Unfortunately though, as it's pathetic 33-million-dollar loss at the box office proves, "The Big Year" was anything but. Our three protagonists are competitive birders, each globe-trotting around the world to see more bird species than the other in one calendar year. Such a travel-heavy and intense hobby-sport has its consequences though: each character must sacrifice something at home, Black, his meager life-savings, Martin: his massive business enterprise and Wilson: his loving wife played by the person with an ounce of talent or heart in this film, Rosamund Pike. The supporting cast is littered with loads of squandered opportunities: Joel McHale, Kevin Pollak, Jim Parsons, and Rashida Jones are literally given nothing to say or do in their limited roles. It's an absolute shame that a production with this many comedic-talents are truly wasted. "The Big Year" may be listed, and advertised as a comedy, but quite frankly - it isn't. There is nothing here even remotely funny. And I don't mean that the jokes fall flat, or don't work... there simply aren't any jokes at all. Dramatically speaking, there are a few moments between man and wife, and father and son that work well... as our birders begin to realize the lives they abandoned for the birds are perhaps their greater calling. Like everything else here, these developments are not effectively explored, leaving an unmotivated and uninteresting birding plot as this movie's only driving force. And for nature or travel enthusiasts, that might be enough to make this film enjoyable, but even that aspect is ruined by the complete lack of magic or wonder instilled into our characters. Three men who give up their entire lives to travel the continent to see exotic bird species... and never once is this passion adequately explained, or the scope of their adventures dramatically portrayed. To them, it's just a pointless competition for bragging rights, and to us - it's just pointless. However, some aspects of this movie are charming, and it does have an easy-to-follow beginning, middle, and end, with a satisfying-enough conclusion... so it saves itself from being a truly awful film, even if it completes fails to inspire much else. "The Big Year", a "Boring, unmotivated waste of talent".

The Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2011
The show we wait for all year round, it's the Big Fat Quiz of the Year!
Your host is, of course, Jimmy Carr. Teams this year are:
Jonathan Ross & Jamie Oliver (The Lisping Ninnies)
David Mitchell & Eddie Izzard (Nexus-6)
Miranda Hart & David Walliams (Les Be Friends)
Unfortunately, no Noel Fielding this year :(
Of course, I do not own any rights to this video. It all belongs to the fine folks at Channel 4, who I'm sure understand that we underprivileged non-Brits need some end of the year quiz fun, too... right?
EDIT: Many are commenting on the paradigm shift here, having Walliams (who usually plays at being the teacher's pet) play the class clown this year, and I wanted to comment on this as well. Since I posted the video, I get to put my comment in the video description!
In case you haven't noticed, every year there's always the "subversive" team that does mostly joke answers. Every team plays at their own slightly different bit, but it's more of a performance than a quiz. How they act one year to another isn't connected. If all the teams gave real answers, this wouldn't be any fun. Since there's no Noel Fielding team this year, which team would you rather have giving the joke answers? Wossy/Oliver is BORING. David Mitchell cannot be irreverent or it would explode the universe. The obvious choice was Walliams & Hart, and I think they did a really good job. I found them really funny.

OFFF Barcelona 2011 Main Titles
Still shocked and excited from last night, it's an honor for us to show you this absolutely MINDBLOWING TITLES made for OFFF by PostPanic.
Thank you so much to PostPanic, and specially to Mischa Rozema, Ania Markham and Si Scott, simply epic!!!
Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
Says Ania Markham, Executive Producer at PostPanic:
“The images created by the crew of people working on the titles has been unbelievable, with nationalities represented including Dutch, Czech, English, American, Polish, German, Swedish and Belgian. It’s been a great opportunity for all of us to work together on a non-commercial project we’re passionate about and we’re so proud of the combined effort and final result.”
DIRECTORS NOTES (Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully,

A Year in New York
As a filmmaker living in New York for the first time, I'd grab my Canon 7D and shoot footage of what was going on around me, to try and take in all that was happening. To try and capture the sense of community I felt in a place so large and diverse.
The HDSLR was a great tool for this. It allowed me get in among people and crowds but at the same time not draw attention to myself.
It seemed like a never ending project and you could stay filming life in New York for a long time. But eventually I put my camera down and started to edit. Here's the end result, it's a bit rough and tumble but that's life in the Big Apple I guess.
Turn up the volume or put your in earphones for the beautiful song 'We Don't Eat' by Irishman James Vincent McMorrow.
For those who asked these are the lens I used:
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG RF

Two Jews On The Big Year
The Big Year-Movie Review,
By Joan Alperin Schwartz
What does a Fork tailed Flycatch, a Yellow Crested Finch and a Pink Footed Goose have in common with Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin? They are all in a new comedy called 'The Big Year', directed by David Frankel (Devil Wears Prada)
The Big Year refers to a real life competition where birders (people who are obessed with our feathery friends) race to see, who can spot the most species of birds, within a calender year.
Sounds exciting? Well if it does, then this is the film for you to see.
When 'The Big Year' begins, we meet three very different men...who share the same dream...to win this competition.
Stu Preissler (Steve Martin)is a very sucessful businessman, who founded his own company. Now, Stu wants to retire to his beautiful home in the woods of Colorado with his wife, Edith(JoBeth Williams) Stu's had it with the corporate rat race. Unfortunately, just when he thought he was out, they (Stu's business associates, Kevin Pollak and Joel McHale) keep pulling him back in...
Brad Harris (Jack Black) is a discontented, code-writer (aren't they all) who hates his job. All Harris wants, is to be the best bird-watcher he can be.
And finally, there's Kenny Bostick (Owen Wilson) a very successful contractor, who holds the record of having seen 732 different species of birds in the course of one calendar year. Kenny equates his title to that of Joe DiMaggios's 56 game hitting streak. Bostick will do anything and everything to hold onto his title..even if it means screwing up his marriage to the lovely, Jessica (Rosamind Pike).
Okay, so to sum up...We have three men who are passionate about birds...lots of male bonding...even some female, male bonding and of course...birds...beautiful, colorful and expressive birds. And I mustn't forget the incredible scenery. 'The Big Year' was shot was shot in Tofino, Osoyoos, Whistler, British Columbia, Upstate New York,Fire Island, Joshua Tree and the Florida Everglades.
Does all that add up to a super funny comedy? Not so much. But the film did make me chuckle several times.
I gave the film more bagels, of course, then John...but we weren't too far apart. Check out our video to see the final count.
'The Big Year' opens in theaters, Friday, October 14, 2011.
