Merkel remains opposed to Eurobonds, addresses Bundestag (German)
German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday told the German parliament, the Bundestag, that she continues to oppose a common financing of government debts in the eurozone. The creation of Eurobonds "will not contribute to overcoming the crisis," she said in a speech ahead of next week EU's summit on the euro in Brussels. Merkel told representatives that she expects it will take years to solve the crisis. The German government leader also said that she opposes a more active role of the European Central Bank, the ECB. Some have suggested that the ECB buy state debts of problem countries, in order to keep interest rates of for example Italy and Spain lower than they are now. This video was made available by the audiovisual services of the Bundestag.

Merkel visits Afghanistan amid rage against NATO
www.euronews.com Angela Merkel has visited German troops in Afghanistan amid a new wave of hostility to foreign forces over a massacre of innocent civilians. The German Chancellor visited a base near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. It came a day after a US soldier killed 16 people in a rampage in the south of the country. A spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said: "ISAF offers its profound regret and deepest condolences to the victims and their families. We pledge to all the noble people of Afghanistan our commitment to a rapid and thorough investigation." The latest killings have fuelled anger over the earlier burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO base. One local man in Kandahar said: "This is a tragic incident. This should be investigated whether this is true or if he was drunk. If he did this deliberately he should be punished with death. Otherwise it will raise many questions and it will help the Taliban to benefit from this." Another said:"The people of Kandahar are very concerned and shocked about this incident. I personally feel very sad. Even I am ready to go to the side of the Taliban to fight against these foreigners." Just days before the killings, Kabul and Washington had made progress in negotiations on a an agreement that would allow American advisers to stay in Afghanistan after foreign troops leave at the end of 2014. Analysts say that agreement has now been significantly undermined. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook ...

euronews interview - D'Alema: Merkel represents a 'selfish Europe'
www.euronews.com Former Italian Prime Minister and President of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, Massimo D'Alema is considered a prominent, Italian leftist. He spoke to euronews about life after Berlusconi and the eurozone's troubles. euronews: "Italy had a shake up towards the end of 2011. Since then, it has slowly recovered but at great cost. The austerity plan has meant higher taxes, pension reform and now labour reform - with incentives for hiring and measures for layoffs. You're a leftist but what are the right answers?" Massimo D'Alema: "Well I have to say that Italy has taken a very important step forward since the replacement of the Berlusconi government. This, for Italy and for the eurozone, was very good news, because Italy was not responsible for the crisis, the government was." euronews: "But with how it is today, including the employment reforms, by introducing more flexibility without necessarily strengthening the safety net in a country where there is no minimum wage, where unemployment benefits are very limited and where the social protection is dysfunctional, are there still risks?" Massimo D'Alema: "The problem was the huge division of the labour market between workers and between the young people who have security and the ones who are in a more precarious situation - with no rights and no protection. So, the reform has two sides, one means there's more flexible work for protected workers but on the other side, there's now more protection ...

Merkel and Sarkozy strangling the Eurozone?
Many in Europe fear that Germany has hidden motives. Since Germany's economy is doing rather well relative to the rest of the Eurozone, many feel the 'Fiscal compact' is Angela Merkel's way of gaining control over the EU. But she is not alone, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Merkel have three months to execute fiscal discipline rules that were agreed upon by European countries in December. Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, joins us to analyze if the compact is really a power grab. Follow Kristine on Twitter at twitter.com
